22/11/2015 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. This cold spell of weather is not set to last too much longer

so if you like your days crisp and bright then enjoy Sunday.

Many people enjoyed Saturday.

There was a covering of snow in quite a few places that got

the weather-watchers all excited. Thanks for sending the photos in.

This one, just an example of the snow covering

the hills across northern England.

There could be a little bit more

in the way of snow,

particularly across the North York Moors during Sunday,

but snow not a big issue any more.

Ice, potentially, on Sunday morning

but overall, Sunday's just a sunny day.

Still cold, still showers in the east

but the winds not as strong

so although it'll still feel

close to freezing in the east overall,

it's a touch milder than it was on Saturday.

Quite quickly though, temperatures will drop

back down below freezing on Sunday evening.

Still some showers to come in across parts of the east.

A blue hue more extensive, if anything,

the frost more widespread

as we head into the new working week.

These are the temperatures in the towns and cities

so rural areas, particularly

where there's any snow lying on the ground,

will be significantly lower,

even as low as -7 or -8.

So, a cold start to the working week.

Generally, a fine day across England and Wales

but notice a change -

the wind's not coming from the north any more,

it's coming in from the west or southwest,

bringing rain across Scotland

and Northern Ireland by the end of the day.

But eventually, also bringing some milder air.

Elsewhere, the winds are relatively light,

fine day, but after that cold start,

we're going to struggle to get much above 6 or 7 Celsius.

The rain across Scotland and Northern Ireland

later on Monday crosses England and Wales

overnight Monday into Tuesday. Follow the isobars.

Now, they no longer point to the Arctic,

they point well out into the Atlantic.

Not exactly warm but just nothing like

as perishingly cold as it is currently.

The rain across East Anglia and the south-east

will clear away steadily during Tuesday

and we're left behind with sunny spells and showers.

Those winds coming from the Atlantic bringing plenty

of moisture so there will be a fair few showers.

This high pressure continues to build in on Wednesday.

Again, follow the isobars.

They point north-west so there will be, initially,

a cold feel about those winds

but not as cold and, again,

there will be showers chiefly

as the moisture hits the land

across western parts of the UK,

many eastern areas staying dry and bright.

Temperatures, actually, by Wednesday,

around about the average for the time of year.

This high dominating over the Azores

is still with us, still controlling things

and pushing the low-pressure systems

to the north of the UK.

Again, the isobars pointing up to the north-west.

Not particularly warm

but compared to current conditions,

it will feel, again, a lot milder.

A weak weather front bringing some patchy rain

into the north-west but for most,

Thursday is a dry day

with those temperatures around or, if anything,

a little above average by the end of the day.

And it will turn a bit milder still come the end of the week.

Through Friday and into the first half of the weekend,

milder air pushing in.

This is the jet stream, that fast-moving ribbon of air,

keeping the low pressures to the north, initially.

But as we go towards next weekend,

it looks like we'll see the jet stream becoming more

east-west across the UK and the colder air arrives as well

so we're going to see some flip-flopping next weekend.

Wet and windy spells because that's what the jet stream does -

when it drives across the UK, it brings us low-pressure systems.

Temperatures overall will be around about average

but we'll probably see one milder day followed by a colder day

and it won't rain all the time, there will be some drier spells in-between.

But a lot of chopping and changing going on.

It could be quite interesting,

particularly with the ground saturated.

Heavy rain not welcome next weekend.
