Ten days or so until Christmas | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
and all sorts can happen between now and then. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
But for those dreaming of a white one, well, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
temperatures are really heading in the wrong direction at the moment. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
We've got a feed of subtropical air | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
coming up from the middle of the Atlantic, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
which does mean that it's going to get even milder | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
over the next few days, if that is possible. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
Mid teens quite widely up and down the UK this week. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
Compare that with where we should be this time of year - | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
a good 5, 6, 7 degrees milder than normal. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Quite remarkable. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
The price we pay is some rain. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
It's been a pretty wet night in some places | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
and still some dribs and drabs left behind. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Though plenty of dry weather too | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
and hopefully where you are | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
you'll see a glimpse of brightness through the day. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
Temperatures shooting up into the mid teens | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
and a lot milder than it has been | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
across the Highlands and Grampians, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
where a thaw continues apace. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
Now, we're a little bit concerned as we go into the night | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
and Thursday morning at a weather front coming in from the west | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
which will bring some fairly persistent rain to Cumbria. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
And of course with the catchments, well, pretty high | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
at the moment, that's something we'll be keeping a very close eye on. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
Weather warnings are in force. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
So rain spreading in from the west. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
Ahead of that, some warm winds again from the south. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
And in any sunshine, 15, 16... | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
maybe 17 degrees in one or two places. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
But that weather front actually is a cold front. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
Don't get too excited, it's not going to introduce particularly chilly air | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
but temperatures won't be just as high as we get in towards Friday. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
We've got some westerly winds for a change | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
so a little bit less mild, shall we say. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
And actually, plenty of dry weather for a time | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
before the next set of weather fronts comes in to the north-west | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
with further wet weather for Northern Ireland, western Scotland | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
and some north-western parts of England and Wales, too. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
Again, low to mid teens is above par. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
Now, this weather system is going to get hooked up | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
across the more northern and western parts of the UK | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
as we go from Friday into Saturday. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
And again, we'll be keeping a close eye on that | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
because we could see some fairly persistent and heavy rain | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
across the high ground of north-west Britain, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
whereas further south and east again, in the sunshine, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
with those southerly winds once more, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
temperatures will be shooting up - | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
15, 16, 17 degrees. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
Once again, it's possible. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
We could see some records broken over the next few days. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
That's how mild it's going to be. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
Later on in the weekend, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
again, we see the southerly winds replaced by westerlies, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
so not just as mild. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
More low pressure systems are getting lined up out in the Atlantic, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
getting fed by a strong jet stream. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
And in the dip of that jet, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
we get low pressure systems forming | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
and whistling up towards the UK. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
Fairly intense features | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
so potentially some further wet and windy weather | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
as we go into the start of next week. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
In fact, the jet stream really is wrapped | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
all the way around the northern hemisphere | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
and it's kind of stuck in this sort of pattern at the moment. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
It has been for so long. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
And the jet stream is the dividing line, of course, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
between cold air in polar regions | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
and milder air to the south. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
And with that jet stream kind of stuck at the moment, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
we're most definitely on the mild side of things. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
We'll have brief incursions of chillier air through next week | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
but only brief, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
and only really affecting the more northern parts of the UK. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Further south, well and truly mild. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
So as we approach Christmas Day, generally mild. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
Briefly chilly at times, especially in the north. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
Plenty of rain and wind, not much in the way of snow. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
And we're going to have to watch out | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
for potentially stormy conditions at times | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
in the run-up to Christmas. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
So a lot going on | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
and I'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29 |
