With recent temperatures more typical of mid-May than mid-December,

0:00:030:00:06

we're going to have to go some if it's a white Christmas you're after.

0:00:060:00:09

We are going to see changes through this week.

0:00:090:00:11

We start off on a pretty mild note.

0:00:110:00:12

Then we're going to see a lot of rain and wind, which could

0:00:120:00:15

have its impact and then turning a bit chillier towards Christmas.

0:00:150:00:19

Will it be cold enough for snow?

0:00:190:00:21

Well, not much snow on the charts for Sunday.

0:00:210:00:23

These are rain showers rattling across the country.

0:00:230:00:25

They'll tend to clear away for the more Southern and Eastern areas,

0:00:250:00:28

so plenty of sunshine developing here.

0:00:280:00:30

A lot more showers to come, further North and West,

0:00:300:00:32

particularly for Western Scotland.

0:00:320:00:33

Some fairly prolonged wet weather here.

0:00:330:00:35

Not AS mild as it has been, but still not remotely cold,

0:00:350:00:39

somewhere between 9 and 14 degrees, North-West to South-East.

0:00:390:00:43

Now, showers will keep going, across the West of Scotland

0:00:430:00:46

in particular overnight. Elsewhere, they'll tend to fade away.

0:00:460:00:48

It could be quite chilly as we head towards dawn. Some early brightness.

0:00:480:00:51

That won't last. The next set of fronts whistles in from the West.

0:00:510:00:54

A period of wet and windy weather but, in turn, that won't last either.

0:00:540:00:58

It will brighten up again behind those fronts from the North West.

0:00:580:01:01

Similar temperatures, though. 9 to 13 degrees North to South.

0:01:010:01:05

Now, that front is just one of many which'll be crossing

0:01:050:01:07

the country over the next few days

0:01:070:01:09

so brace yourself for further spells of wet and windy weather.

0:01:090:01:11

Tuesday looks particularly wet,

0:01:110:01:13

especially across the high ground of North-West Britain, so South-West

0:01:130:01:16

Scotland, the Cumbrian Fells, Snowdonia, could see a lot of rain.

0:01:160:01:20

Warnings are in force.

0:01:200:01:22

Quite mild air, just for a time, across the South-East,

0:01:220:01:24

so temperatures could jump up towards the mid-teens.

0:01:240:01:27

That'll be tempered by the strength of the wind.

0:01:270:01:29

It'll brighten up behind those fronts, further North and West.

0:01:290:01:32

Those brighter skies will spread across the whole of the country

0:01:320:01:34

come the middle of the week. Some sunshine.

0:01:340:01:36

The wind is not just so strong.

0:01:360:01:38

There will be some blustery showers for the North-West,

0:01:380:01:40

those temperatures just easing down a degree or so.

0:01:400:01:42

Now, as we head towards Christmas Eve,

0:01:420:01:45

we're quite concerned about developments of this feature here.

0:01:450:01:48

It could be more intense than this indicates, which could give the risk

0:01:480:01:52

of some very strong winds for the far North of Scotland in particular.

0:01:520:01:55

We'll keep an eye on that, but certainly some very wet weather

0:01:550:01:57

sweeping its way across the country on Christmas Eve,

0:01:570:02:00

so if you're travelling to friends and relatives, watch out for that.

0:02:000:02:03

You'll notice, though, that the low pressure systems

0:02:030:02:06

are taking rather more of a Southerly trajectory

0:02:060:02:09

than we've seen in recent weeks

0:02:090:02:11

and they're following the track of the jet stream, in actual fact.

0:02:110:02:13

The jet stream which for so long has been to the North of us

0:02:130:02:16

is now showing signs of taking a more Southerly path and, of course,

0:02:160:02:20

the jet stream's dividing line between warm air to the South

0:02:200:02:23

and colder air to the North so, for a change, later on this week

0:02:230:02:27

as we approach Christmas, we are going to be in the chillier air.

0:02:270:02:31

Not desperately cold,

0:02:310:02:32

but certainly a contrast compared with what we've had for recent weeks.

0:02:320:02:36

It will feel quite cold and the showers across Northern Britain

0:02:360:02:39

could well be wintry in flavour up over the hills.

0:02:390:02:42

So, what about a white Christmas? What constitutes a white Christmas?

0:02:420:02:45

Just one flake of snow. That's all you need

0:02:450:02:47

and that's happened 38 times over the past 55 years.

0:02:470:02:51

The deepest snow, the most widespread snow recently, 2010.

0:02:510:02:55

For the big day, then, it looks as if it will be a cold start

0:02:550:02:59

and Northern areas will probably stay in that chilly air.

0:02:590:03:02

Fronts will try to push in from the South, bringing rain,

0:03:020:03:05

and eventually they'll try to bring in milder air as well.

0:03:050:03:07

There's a lot of uncertainty about the progress of these fronts

0:03:070:03:10

as they push into that colder air.

0:03:100:03:12

And then, next weekend, it looks as if that rain will clear, but before

0:03:120:03:15

that happens, there is the risk of some snow across Northern areas.

0:03:150:03:19

Of course, mostly up over the high ground. That'll clear through.

0:03:190:03:22

It turns drier, we think, for a time, at long last,

0:03:220:03:25

and probably a touch chillier, but for how long?

0:03:250:03:28

I'll update you again tomorrow.
