Hello. Thanks for tuning in to our outlook for the next ten days. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
We know now that Christmas is going to be very mild, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
particularly across the south of the country, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
but in the short term we're also keeping an eye on this massive | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
cloud here coming out of Eastern Canada, out of Newfoundland. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
This is going to be Storm Eva | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
and it's going to sweep to the north-west of the United Kingdom and | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
it's going to bring a spell of severe gales to north-western Scotland. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
So here it is. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
First thing on Wednesday morning it's still more | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
than 1,000 miles to the south-west of us and actually, Wednesday, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
ahead of this storm, it's going to be a pretty good day for most of us. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
There will be some sunshine around. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
We've got showers and more of a breeze across the northern | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
half of Scotland, but the bulk of the UK should enjoy a fine day. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
Let's see what the middle of the afternoon is going to be like, then. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
And starting in Scotland and Northern Ireland, you can | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
see the rain's just about approaching Northern Ireland here. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
A few showers in the Northern Isles. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
A fairly coolish sort of day, around five, six degrees. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
Remember, the winds are strengthening so it will feel a little bit | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
colder than perhaps the temperature suggests. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
And across the south of the country those highs aren't | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
quite as high as what we've been used to in the last few days. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
This is still very, very mild for the time of year, around 12 degrees, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:13
but we've been used to around 15 or 16. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
So, here's Wednesday afternoon and evening. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
We're starting to approach Christmas Eve | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
and Storm Eva moves to the north-west of us. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
We're not anticipating it to be the most ferocious of storms, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
but it's still going to bring a spell of rough weather. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
The worst of it once again I'd like to emphasise will be | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
to the north-west of the country, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
but wherever you are in the UK on Christmas Eve, if you're travelling, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
there will be some very gusty conditions about | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
and the odd downpour too. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
So, Christmas Eve, first thing in the morning, early hours, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
gusts of 50mph across mainland Scotland, 70-80 for Stornoway there, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
then that storm's going to sweep past Orkney and Shetland. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
So rough weather for us across this part of the country. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
Here's the band of rain that will be crossing the UK at the sting, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
the tail of Storm Eva. | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
That is going to bring some temporarily gale-force winds | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
to some other parts of the UK. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
But later on in the day on Christmas Eve we are actually going to | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
get some clearer skies, or dare I say it, even some sunshine. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
Mild one - 13 degrees in London but colder there, of course, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
in windswept Scotland - around six or seven degrees Celsius. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
The weather isn't going to change much through Christmas Eve evening - | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
it's still going to be blustery | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
and we will see some heavy showers about as well. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Now, onto Christmas Day. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
I already spilt the beans at the beginning of the broadcast - | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
it's going to be a mild one - | 0:02:27 | 0:02:28
but that's what we've been forecasting for quite some time now. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
South-westerly winds, temperatures of around 13 degrees | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
and outbreaks of rain. Colder weather in Scotland - | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
could even be a touch of frost first thing in the morning. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
And this pattern, with low pressure close by and mild south-westerlies | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
continues right into Boxing Day, so rain around with mild weather. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:49
Now, beyond that, into early next week, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
look how far north this mild air has reached. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
In fact almost into the Arctic Circle there. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
Southern parts of Scandinavia also getting the mild conditions, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
so really the emphasis for early next week is that it is going to | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
stay mild and this pattern, the jet stream giving us | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
a fetch of mild air from the south-west is not going to budge. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
This jet stream would have to be further southwards | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
to get colder weather. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
Yesterday we talked a little bit about New Year's Eve. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
Still too early to say exactly what weather we're going to get but it | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
still does look like it is going to be a relatively mild New Year's Eve. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:28
Thanks for watching. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
I'm here surrounded by one of nature's greatest wonders, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:38 |
