Hello, thanks for tuning in. The Christmas period

0:00:040:00:06

and the run-up to the New Year will bring further severe weather.

0:00:060:00:09

It'll be very changeable from day to day,

0:00:090:00:11

but I think we have to be prepared for some very strong winds

0:00:110:00:14

and some heavy rain almost anywhere in the UK.

0:00:140:00:16

And this bout of nasty weather across the north-west of the country

0:00:160:00:19

at the moment, this is Storm Eva.

0:00:190:00:21

It'll be sweeping to the north-west of us,

0:00:210:00:23

so early in the morning on Christmas Eve,

0:00:230:00:25

severe gales blowing through north-western Scotland.

0:00:250:00:28

Gusts of 70mph.

0:00:280:00:29

I think all of us will feel the effects of Storm Eva.

0:00:290:00:32

To a lesser extent across the south,

0:00:320:00:34

but it still will be nasty on the roads

0:00:340:00:36

if you're travelling at this time in the morning.

0:00:360:00:38

Eight, nine o'clock, you can see a band of heavy rain,

0:00:380:00:40

and the major motorways here -

0:00:400:00:42

the M4, M40, M1 here,

0:00:420:00:44

and within this band of heavy rain,

0:00:440:00:46

we've also got some very strong winds as well.

0:00:460:00:48

So nasty conditions on the roads with surface spray.

0:00:480:00:51

But later on in the morning,

0:00:510:00:52

the weather is improving a little bit across Yorkshire.

0:00:520:00:54

But we'll still have one or two gusty showers

0:00:540:00:57

even once that main rain band clears away.

0:00:570:00:59

And here it is around about midday,

0:00:590:01:01

two, three o'clock,

0:01:010:01:03

eventually in the afternoon it clears out into the North Sea.

0:01:030:01:06

And we're actually left over with some sunshine,

0:01:060:01:08

but it will be quite a brisk day.

0:01:080:01:10

And the gales - remnants of Eva still blowing

0:01:100:01:12

across the far north of Scotland.

0:01:120:01:14

13 in London the top temperature on Christmas Eve.

0:01:140:01:16

More like six or seven across Scotland

0:01:160:01:19

and Northern Ireland.

0:01:190:01:21

Christmas Day itself -

0:01:210:01:22

here's Eva across Scandinavia.

0:01:220:01:24

In the wake of Eva,

0:01:240:01:26

we have another area of low pressure

0:01:260:01:27

heading our way, and this area of low pressure

0:01:270:01:30

will be responsible for bringing further rain,

0:01:300:01:32

not just to southern and central areas

0:01:320:01:34

but also places like Cumbria right into Boxing Day.

0:01:340:01:37

So Christmas Day itself - mild and wet

0:01:370:01:39

across the south, 13 degrees.

0:01:390:01:40

But it could be frosty, even quite Christmassy

0:01:400:01:43

for a time in Scotland before the temperatures rise here too,

0:01:430:01:46

although around four or five, I think,

0:01:460:01:48

the top temperature for the north of Scotland.

0:01:480:01:50

Here's a look at Boxing Day, and the Met office has issued

0:01:500:01:53

an amber warning because of the heavy rain

0:01:530:01:55

which may impact Cumbria.

0:01:550:01:57

There's still some uncertainty exactly where this heavy rain

0:01:570:02:00

could go. Maybe a little bit further north, a little bit further south.

0:02:000:02:03

But we are starting to see indications that it will,

0:02:030:02:05

in fact, go across parts of Cumbria.

0:02:050:02:07

We could see 60-80 millimetres of rain,

0:02:070:02:09

and that could prove disruptive,

0:02:090:02:11

further flooding is certainly possible.

0:02:110:02:13

So if you're travelling, not just across Cumbria

0:02:130:02:15

but throughout the country, stay tuned to the updates on TV

0:02:150:02:18

and also your local radio, because the weather will be changing

0:02:180:02:21

quite dramatically from one day to another.

0:02:210:02:23

Here's a look at Sunday, and there are some changes.

0:02:230:02:26

It's actually going to turn warmer.

0:02:260:02:28

This huge area of low pressure across the Atlantic

0:02:280:02:31

keeps scooping up mild air from the south,

0:02:310:02:34

the story of the winter, and look at that.

0:02:340:02:36

That mild air stretches right across Europe,

0:02:360:02:38

so many of the major centres throughout the weekend

0:02:380:02:41

will have mild weather.

0:02:410:02:43

In fact, it'll be just as warm in London

0:02:430:02:46

as it'll be in Rome, around 13 degrees Celsius.

0:02:460:02:49

Even in Moscow, temperatures will be just a fraction above freezing,

0:02:490:02:52

which is above the average for the time of year.

0:02:520:02:54

Now, watch what happens next week.

0:02:540:02:56

So this is the run-up to the New Year.

0:02:560:02:58

Another storm brews across the Atlantic here

0:02:580:03:00

as this cold air from the north Atlantic

0:03:000:03:02

clashes with this exceptionally mild air

0:03:020:03:04

coming out of the Azores here.

0:03:040:03:06

That means, basically, more heavy rain

0:03:060:03:09

and strong winds close to the UK.

0:03:090:03:10

Still unsure exactly where this low's going to be,

0:03:100:03:13

but you can see one way or another,

0:03:130:03:14

we are going to get strong winds and some heavy rain too.

0:03:140:03:17

So I think, in summary,

0:03:170:03:19

this is what it's going to look like.

0:03:190:03:21

Certainly coastal areas getting a battering from the strong winds.

0:03:210:03:24

Inland areas will be getting windy weather too

0:03:240:03:26

with some heavy rain,

0:03:260:03:28

so just keep track of the weather updates.

0:03:280:03:30

Relax this Christmas as BBC Two brings you

0:03:320:03:35

some inspiring cultural treats.

0:03:350:03:37

Leaps, lunges, plies -

0:03:370:03:39

let Darcey introduce us to her ballet heroes.

0:03:390:03:42

Misunderstood, complicated -

0:03:420:03:44

male ballet dancers don't conform.

0:03:440:03:47

Then we have more ballet, this time with love, espionage and betrayal

0:03:470:03:50

in Nureyev's Dance To Freedom.

0:03:500:03:52
