Hello, thanks for tuning in. The Christmas period | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
and the run-up to the New Year will bring further severe weather. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
It'll be very changeable from day to day, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
but I think we have to be prepared for some very strong winds | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
and some heavy rain almost anywhere in the UK. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
And this bout of nasty weather across the north-west of the country | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
at the moment, this is Storm Eva. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
It'll be sweeping to the north-west of us, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
so early in the morning on Christmas Eve, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
severe gales blowing through north-western Scotland. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
Gusts of 70mph. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
I think all of us will feel the effects of Storm Eva. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
To a lesser extent across the south, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
but it still will be nasty on the roads | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
if you're travelling at this time in the morning. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Eight, nine o'clock, you can see a band of heavy rain, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
and the major motorways here - | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
the M4, M40, M1 here, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
and within this band of heavy rain, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
we've also got some very strong winds as well. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
So nasty conditions on the roads with surface spray. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
But later on in the morning, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
the weather is improving a little bit across Yorkshire. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
But we'll still have one or two gusty showers | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
even once that main rain band clears away. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
And here it is around about midday, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
two, three o'clock, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
eventually in the afternoon it clears out into the North Sea. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
And we're actually left over with some sunshine, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
but it will be quite a brisk day. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
And the gales - remnants of Eva still blowing | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
across the far north of Scotland. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
13 in London the top temperature on Christmas Eve. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
More like six or seven across Scotland | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
and Northern Ireland. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
Christmas Day itself - | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
here's Eva across Scandinavia. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
In the wake of Eva, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
we have another area of low pressure | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
heading our way, and this area of low pressure | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
will be responsible for bringing further rain, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
not just to southern and central areas | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
but also places like Cumbria right into Boxing Day. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
So Christmas Day itself - mild and wet | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
across the south, 13 degrees. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
But it could be frosty, even quite Christmassy | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
for a time in Scotland before the temperatures rise here too, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
although around four or five, I think, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
the top temperature for the north of Scotland. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Here's a look at Boxing Day, and the Met office has issued | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
an amber warning because of the heavy rain | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
which may impact Cumbria. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
There's still some uncertainty exactly where this heavy rain | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
could go. Maybe a little bit further north, a little bit further south. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
But we are starting to see indications that it will, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
in fact, go across parts of Cumbria. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
We could see 60-80 millimetres of rain, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
and that could prove disruptive, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
further flooding is certainly possible. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
So if you're travelling, not just across Cumbria | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
but throughout the country, stay tuned to the updates on TV | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
and also your local radio, because the weather will be changing | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
quite dramatically from one day to another. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Here's a look at Sunday, and there are some changes. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
It's actually going to turn warmer. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
This huge area of low pressure across the Atlantic | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
keeps scooping up mild air from the south, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
the story of the winter, and look at that. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
That mild air stretches right across Europe, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
so many of the major centres throughout the weekend | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
will have mild weather. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
In fact, it'll be just as warm in London | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
as it'll be in Rome, around 13 degrees Celsius. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
Even in Moscow, temperatures will be just a fraction above freezing, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
which is above the average for the time of year. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
Now, watch what happens next week. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
So this is the run-up to the New Year. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
Another storm brews across the Atlantic here | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
as this cold air from the north Atlantic | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
clashes with this exceptionally mild air | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
coming out of the Azores here. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
That means, basically, more heavy rain | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
and strong winds close to the UK. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
Still unsure exactly where this low's going to be, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
but you can see one way or another, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
we are going to get strong winds and some heavy rain too. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
So I think, in summary, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
this is what it's going to look like. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
Certainly coastal areas getting a battering from the strong winds. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
Inland areas will be getting windy weather too | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
with some heavy rain, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
so just keep track of the weather updates. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
