Hello. As we say goodbye to 2015,

0:00:020:00:04

our thoughts start to drift towards the weather for 2016.

0:00:040:00:07

More on that in just a moment.

0:00:070:00:09

But I just want to recap on December.

0:00:090:00:11

Temperatures averaged out at around 8 degrees.

0:00:110:00:14

It was a mild month.

0:00:140:00:15

Way above the average where we should be at this time of year.

0:00:150:00:19

It was also a wet one. No surprises to hear that.

0:00:190:00:22

It was the wettest on record for Wales and for Scotland.

0:00:220:00:25

In fact, it was the wettest calendar month in Scotland ever recorded.

0:00:250:00:29

We also saw some very heavy, persistent rain

0:00:290:00:31

across north-west England.

0:00:310:00:32

But the rest of England and Wales, not too bad.

0:00:320:00:35

Now, one of the reasons for this heavy, persistent rain

0:00:350:00:38

and the mild weather is the kink that we had in the jet stream,

0:00:380:00:41

driving up the wind direction from the south-west

0:00:410:00:43

and that brought that warm, moist air that produced the rain.

0:00:430:00:47

New Year's Eve wasn't too bad.

0:00:470:00:49

We had a little bump of high pressure build

0:00:490:00:51

and so just a few shower clouds.

0:00:510:00:52

But New Year's Day, the clouds start to gather.

0:00:520:00:55

And that's going to bring some wet weather

0:00:550:00:56

and some windy weather into the south-west.

0:00:560:00:59

It will give you a chilly start through New Year's Day.

0:00:590:01:01

Eventually, the clouds spilling in and the wind is quite a feature,

0:01:010:01:04

particularly down into the south-west,

0:01:040:01:06

as we see some cloud, wind and rain developing.

0:01:060:01:09

So that means, with the cloud,

0:01:090:01:10

temperatures in some areas at around 4 or 5 degrees.

0:01:100:01:13

Bit of a shock to the system.

0:01:130:01:15

But it will turn milder,

0:01:150:01:17

but stay pretty unsettled through New Year's Day into Monday.

0:01:170:01:21

And that's because that area of low pressure slowly drifts away,

0:01:210:01:25

we see another pattern developing with a ridge of high,

0:01:250:01:28

before the next low moves in.

0:01:280:01:29

So on Saturday, it's going to be a case

0:01:290:01:31

of sunny spells and scattered showers.

0:01:310:01:32

It stays pretty blustery, as well.

0:01:320:01:34

The showers not as intense or as persistent as they have been,

0:01:340:01:37

perhaps with the exception of the far north-east of Scotland.

0:01:370:01:40

Top temperatures between 7 and 12 degrees.

0:01:400:01:43

Now, as we move out of Saturday

0:01:430:01:46

and that ridge of high pressure gets pushed out of the way

0:01:460:01:48

by the next low, the isobars squeezing together,

0:01:480:01:51

the winds remaining a feature

0:01:510:01:53

and this will bring more significant cloud, wind and rain

0:01:530:01:56

across the country from the west, just where we don't need it.

0:01:560:01:59

So again, some persistent rain into the south-west across Wales

0:01:590:02:03

and eventually that will merge

0:02:030:02:04

with those persistent showers in the north-east of Scotland.

0:02:040:02:07

So we'll need to keep a close eye

0:02:070:02:08

on weather events taking place during Sunday.

0:02:080:02:12

That area of low pressure, the bulk of the rain will ease away,

0:02:120:02:14

but still influencing our weather on Monday.

0:02:140:02:17

It just drifts its way down through the west coast,

0:02:170:02:20

so there is the potential, wrapping itself around that low,

0:02:200:02:23

for the winds to remain a feature and plenty of showers piling in, as well.

0:02:230:02:27

Top temperatures on Monday of around 6 to 10 degrees.

0:02:270:02:31

It's a similar pattern developing.

0:02:310:02:33

The low will drift out of the way,

0:02:330:02:34

allowing a ridge of high pressure to build.

0:02:340:02:36

So we could end up with a rather chilly feel

0:02:360:02:39

before the next low waits out into the wings.

0:02:390:02:42

So, as we move into Tuesday, the winds a feature across the south

0:02:420:02:45

and running in through the east coast.

0:02:450:02:47

That'll have the heaviest of the rain.

0:02:470:02:48

It will feel quite cool - 5 or 6 degrees.

0:02:480:02:51

The best of the shelter,

0:02:510:02:52

the best of the dry weather through Tuesday out to the west.

0:02:520:02:55

As we move into the longer period, the six- to ten-day period,

0:02:550:02:58

we have this low pressure down to the south-west,

0:02:580:03:01

but the jet stream is starting to split, weaken a little.

0:03:010:03:04

Why? Because of an area of high pressure blocking it

0:03:040:03:07

out into Europe.

0:03:070:03:09

And that means that, as the jet stream splits,

0:03:090:03:11

it weakens a little.

0:03:110:03:12

So the weather patterns may well change.

0:03:120:03:14

There's the potential still for some rain around,

0:03:140:03:17

but it looks likely that we're likely to see

0:03:170:03:19

more significant rain across

0:03:190:03:20

central and southern parts of England,

0:03:200:03:22

where we've not had as much in recent days or weeks.

0:03:220:03:25

Still feeling cool and often rather cloudy, as well.

0:03:250:03:29

My findings at the inquest argued for suicide.

0:03:320:03:35

Now I've missed a murder.

0:03:350:03:37

You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence
