Hello. As we say goodbye to 2015, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
our thoughts start to drift towards the weather for 2016. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
More on that in just a moment. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
But I just want to recap on December. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
Temperatures averaged out at around 8 degrees. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
It was a mild month. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
Way above the average where we should be at this time of year. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
It was also a wet one. No surprises to hear that. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
It was the wettest on record for Wales and for Scotland. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
In fact, it was the wettest calendar month in Scotland ever recorded. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
We also saw some very heavy, persistent rain | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
across north-west England. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
But the rest of England and Wales, not too bad. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
Now, one of the reasons for this heavy, persistent rain | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
and the mild weather is the kink that we had in the jet stream, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
driving up the wind direction from the south-west | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
and that brought that warm, moist air that produced the rain. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
New Year's Eve wasn't too bad. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
We had a little bump of high pressure build | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
and so just a few shower clouds. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
But New Year's Day, the clouds start to gather. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
And that's going to bring some wet weather | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
and some windy weather into the south-west. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
It will give you a chilly start through New Year's Day. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
Eventually, the clouds spilling in and the wind is quite a feature, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
particularly down into the south-west, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
as we see some cloud, wind and rain developing. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
So that means, with the cloud, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
temperatures in some areas at around 4 or 5 degrees. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
Bit of a shock to the system. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
But it will turn milder, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
but stay pretty unsettled through New Year's Day into Monday. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
And that's because that area of low pressure slowly drifts away, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
we see another pattern developing with a ridge of high, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
before the next low moves in. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
So on Saturday, it's going to be a case | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
of sunny spells and scattered showers. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
It stays pretty blustery, as well. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
The showers not as intense or as persistent as they have been, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
perhaps with the exception of the far north-east of Scotland. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
Top temperatures between 7 and 12 degrees. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Now, as we move out of Saturday | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
and that ridge of high pressure gets pushed out of the way | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
by the next low, the isobars squeezing together, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
the winds remaining a feature | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
and this will bring more significant cloud, wind and rain | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
across the country from the west, just where we don't need it. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
So again, some persistent rain into the south-west across Wales | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
and eventually that will merge | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
with those persistent showers in the north-east of Scotland. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
So we'll need to keep a close eye | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
on weather events taking place during Sunday. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
That area of low pressure, the bulk of the rain will ease away, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
but still influencing our weather on Monday. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
It just drifts its way down through the west coast, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
so there is the potential, wrapping itself around that low, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
for the winds to remain a feature and plenty of showers piling in, as well. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
Top temperatures on Monday of around 6 to 10 degrees. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
It's a similar pattern developing. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
The low will drift out of the way, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
allowing a ridge of high pressure to build. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
So we could end up with a rather chilly feel | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
before the next low waits out into the wings. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
So, as we move into Tuesday, the winds a feature across the south | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
and running in through the east coast. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
That'll have the heaviest of the rain. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
It will feel quite cool - 5 or 6 degrees. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
The best of the shelter, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
the best of the dry weather through Tuesday out to the west. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
As we move into the longer period, the six- to ten-day period, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
we have this low pressure down to the south-west, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
but the jet stream is starting to split, weaken a little. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
Why? Because of an area of high pressure blocking it | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
out into Europe. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
And that means that, as the jet stream splits, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
it weakens a little. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
So the weather patterns may well change. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
There's the potential still for some rain around, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
but it looks likely that we're likely to see | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
more significant rain across | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
central and southern parts of England, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
where we've not had as much in recent days or weeks. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
Still feeling cool and often rather cloudy, as well. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
My findings at the inquest argued for suicide. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Now I've missed a murder. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40 |
