10/01/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

If you're sick to death of this mild wet and windy weather

and you want something cold and wintry,

it looks as thought your dreams may come true as we move into next week.

More on that in a moment,

but in the driving seat for Sunday low pressure remains in control.

And it stays wet and windy at times.

Particularly in the north, with snow showers to the tops of higher ground.

The winds will feature here across the extreme northeast,

with gusts in excess of 60mph, possibly 70mph

and frequent spells of wet weather for a time through the morning.

Not too bad into Northern Ireland,

and across England and Wales there will

be fewer showers around on Sunday than at the beginning of the weekend.

They'll be less organised,

and hopefully there'll be some drier, brighter,

interludes from time to time.

As we go into the afternoon, after that chilly start,

it looks as through we will see some sunshine for

England and Wales and Northern Ireland,

but in Scotland it stays cloudy,

wet and windy, and there will be further showers of rain,

sleet and snow to the tops of the hills

with wind as a feature, it's going to feel quite disappointing.

5 or 6, generally the best, 7-10 degrees further south.

As we move into the start of a new working week,

low pressure stays with us for a time.

It will drift its way steadily southwards.

We're still going to see further showers as they push their

way across the Pennines and into north Wales.

There could be some winteriness here for some time as well.

The strongest of the winds across the northwest of Scotland through

Northern Ireland, sunny spells and scattered showers,

and feeling just that little bit cooler.

As we move out of Monday into Tuesday,

the winds will swing round more to a northerly direction.

Perhaps fewer showers around, and more sunshine, but again,

across the Peaks and Pennines we could see snow showers developing.

Perhaps even at lower levels for a time, and turning a little cooler.

Tuesday night into Wednesday shows a significantly colder night

to come with those clear skies by day falling away over night.

Those temperatures are going to plummet down to -7 to -10 degrees

in more rural and exposed parts.

As we move through the middle of the week,

we've still got this area of

low pressure enhancing some showers into the north,

but another area of low pressure,

which could mean trouble in the south as it bumps into colder air, there is

the potential for some snow showers

at lower levels across southern Britain.

Something we need to keep a close eye on.

As the low sits to the southeast still dragging in this colder

Arctic air, moving across the Atlantic, it is going to

feel bitterly cold in comparison to what we've seen of late.

The blue tones really stretching right down across the UK with only

the warmer yellow tones stretching across the far south of Europe.

As we move into the weekend,

high pressure will start to build from the southwest,

so, potentially, quietening things down .

A good deal of dry weather looks likely into the weekend but

it'll still be pretty cold with some widespread frost

to look out for first thing in the morning.

The longer six to ten day period shows the potential for a low

to build again out in the Atlantic

and the winds to come round to

more of a south-westerly or a westerly

which means that it will get a bit milder and a little more unsettled.

Enough of that, let's concentrate on this colder feel, with frost

and ice an issue, a biting north-westerly wind, wintry

showers for all, and some of these could even fall at lower levels.

It's going to be

worth watching the forecast

over the next couple of days.
