It's pretty fair to say we've seen a return to more changeable, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
fickle weather in recent days with a couple of days of milder weather | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
and then a short, sharp colder snap. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
But unfortunately the wet and windy weather | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
through yesterday brought some localised flooding, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
as denoted by our weather watcher's picture | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
close to the Scottish borders. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
And there's more wet and extremely windy weather to come | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
as we move right into the weekend | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
with low pressure systems crossing the UK, bringing more rain and wind. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:28
That will be the story through Thursday. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Up into the far north-west, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
showers merging together for longer spells of rain. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
But after a chilly start, there will be some sunshine for England | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
and Wales, despite the cloud thickening into the afternoon | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
the further west you are. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
But the best of the sun, really, across the Midlands | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
and the south with temperatures recovering after that cold start | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
to highs of 8-10 degrees. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
Further north, wetter and windier weather continues. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
In the far north and west, seven or eight the high. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
And the winds remain a feature, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
with severe gales likely to develop through the night. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
And then, as we move into Friday, | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
we could see storm-force gusts of wind for a time across the far | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
north of Scotland accompanied by some very heavy, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
persistent rain - we'll need to keep a close eye on the localised | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
flooding potential across southern Scotland, northern England | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
and north Wales. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
But further south it stays windy, cloudy with a few showers, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
brighter but somewhat colder weather conditions perhaps developing | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
into the far north and west. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
Here, single figures, 12 degrees the overall high. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
As we move out of Friday into Saturday | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
we could for a time see some heavy and persistent rain clearing its way | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
south and east and the timing of that is a little uncertain. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
Behind it the winds swing more round to a north-westerly, so again colder | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
and again any showers will fall as snow to the tops of the mountains. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
Once that rain has cleared away it will be milder to the south, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
colder to the north. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
But that mild air is set to continue down to the south as we move | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
out of Saturday into Sunday. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
A weather front continues to ripple or rollercoaster north | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
and south across the country, introducing more wet weather | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
and a milder feel here. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
On Sunday, cooler and somewhat showery into the far north and west. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
You can see by the difference in the weather arrows - | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
a south-westerly, milder flow down to the south, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
a cooler north-westerly flow perhaps into the far north. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
As we move out of Monday we see a return back to | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
more of a south-westerly, generally. Again, a mild theme. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
There will be a fair amount of cloud | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
and we continue to see some showers up into the far north and west. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
But things will start to change as we look into | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
the six to ten day period. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
We have seen these areas of low pressure crossing the UK, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
dragging in the milder wind, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
but into next week, as the low moves away, it's going to allow | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
that cold air to dig just that little bit further south. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
We could repeat the process through the latter stages | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
of the ten day period but the cold air set to return. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
And the reason for that is the jet stream is just that little | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
bit further south and so each time, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
that's allowing that colder air to dig further south and more of | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
the wetter, windier weather continue to push across the near continent. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
So basically, what does that mean for us? | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
It means that the start of February looks likely to be | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
colder than the end of January. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
There will be some wind and rain around | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
but there's a potential of seeing perhaps more of | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
a wintry flavour to our showers as that cold air continues to dominate. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
That's how it's looking, I'll be back with further details tomorrow. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19 |
