Hello. Storm Gertrude may become yesterday's fish and chip paper, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
but I'm sure residents of Shetland won't forget her in a hurry | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
because we had the strongest gusts of wind for 16 years, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
in excess of 100 miles an hour. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
We also had severe gales generally across central-southern Scotland, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
Northern Ireland and northern England. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
And there's more wet and windy weather to come. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
On Sunday, we could see more wet weather | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
bumping into cold air into the north | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
and bringing snow, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
before another significant area | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
of low pressure develops on Monday. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
This one may become another named storm. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
If that happens, it'll be Henry. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
That's a long way off. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
For Saturday, it looks like | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
we'll see most sunshine | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
in central and southern England, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
with wintry showers | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
continuing across Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
A wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
There'll certainly be lying snow | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
as temperatures struggle. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
Milder in the sunshine to the south, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
but even so, colder than of late, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
with 6 or 8 degrees, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
the real cold air sitting to the north | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
with 3 or 4 as a maximum. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
They'll still be further snow showers for a time | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
as we move out of Saturday. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Ice could be a hazard as well on the roads | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
before we start to see more cloud and rain | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
gathering into the South and West. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
This will continue to push north and east. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
On the leading edge, for a time | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
across northern England and into Scotland, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
there'll be snow before it turns back to rain. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
As the rain clears, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
a legacy of cloud, drab afternoon. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
But a milder afternoon, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
with 11-13 degrees the high. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Still pretty cold | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
in the far north-east of Scotland, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
3 or 4 degrees. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
Out of Sunday, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
that frontal system drifts away. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
But then that significant area | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
of low pressure moves in. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
And just like Gertrude, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
the strongest winds will be centred | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
to the southern flank of that low. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
Centred across the northern half of the country. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
There'll also be significant rain, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
which may lead to localised flooding. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Certainly one to keep an eye on. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
Another mild but windy day further south, | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
with temperatures again into the mid teens. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
As we move out of Monday into Tuesday, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
things get quieter, a bit colder as well, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
with a few wintry showers returning | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
into the far North and West. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
But at least there should be | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
dry, sunny weather around. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:14
Just a slight question mark | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
as to where this rain is sitting | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
through the Channel coast | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
and whether it will lap on | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
to the sudden portion of the UK. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
Let's look further afield. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
We've got that significant area of low pressure on Monday | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
which we need to clear out of the way. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
Once it does, it allows cold air | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
to become more dominant, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
so through the middle of next week | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
we could see a more prolonged, lengthier cold snap. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
The question is just when the milder air | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
will start to push back in. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
The reason we'll see this lengthier cold snap is | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
the jet stream will be sitting south of the UK | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
and that would allow cold air to dig that little bit further south. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
But by the middle to the end of next week, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
the jet stream looks likely to push further north again, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
allowing a more mobile flow | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
and allowing milder, south-westerly air to come in. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
A lot of uncertainty as to the timings of | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
when this is likely to happen. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
So, through the middle of the week, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
we may see some frost through the night, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
but hopefully some lovely spells of sunshine as well. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
By day, it looks quite promising. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
A lovely first week of February. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
However, by the end of the week, things will start to change, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
and once the jet stream moves further north, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
we'll see certainly more in the way cloud | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
and the potential for more wet weather to come. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Ugh! Never mind, whatever you're doing, enjoy your weekend. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
Is there any chance at all | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
that you might be pregnant? | 0:03:34 | 0:03:35
You should be ashamed of yourself, you little madam. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
We want to minimise the chance of contamination | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
but we should be ready. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
I appear to have won a meal in the West End. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47 |
