Hello. Not long after Storm Gertrude has moved away, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
we're already eyeing up our next named storm for Monday | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
and Tuesday with wind and rain - that's Henry. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
We'll look at that in a moment. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
First, an image from Saturday's weather. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
Widespread snow in Highland Scotland | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
captured by one of our weather-watchers. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
Even blizzards with the strong winds | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
but a change coming for part two of the weekend. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
For Sunday, we're going to see milder air | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
beginning to push back in from the south-west | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
but that comes with outbreaks of rain. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
So, actually, many of us have seen sunshine | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
at some stage during Saturday | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
but for Sunday, here we go. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
It's a cloudier, wetter story, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
so sunshine hard to come by and, yes, milder air | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
is spreading northwards but it's going to take | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
a long time to go into Scotland, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
not really until Sunday night. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Late recovery in temperatures | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
down the eastern side of England | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
and on the leading flank of that wet weather | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
pushing northwards, especially to the hills | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
of Scotland and Northern England, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
there will be some snow for a time. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
There's a big range of temperatures for Sunday | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
but Sunday night, the milder air continues | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
its journey northwards, completes its journey | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
northwards across the UK, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
bringing some further heavy rain across parts | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
of Scotland so we start Monday, all of us, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
in the mild air but the winds are strengthening | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
and that's as Storm Henry moves in. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
So we'll take a look at it on the big picture. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Another deepening area of low pressure. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
That's going to produce gales, severe gales, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
widely across the UK | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
but the strongest, most disruptive winds | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
the closer you are to the base of this low pressure, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
that's later on Monday into Monday night | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
across the north of Scotland in particular. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
And this is where the Met Office | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
has an Amber "be prepared" warning in force | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
because winds will strengthen here during Monday | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
into Monday night | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
and that's where we could see some gusts of up to 90mph. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
On Monday, more rain spreads its way southwards. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Brighter, showery conditions following on behind | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
but turning colder once again with some snow showers developing | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
over the hills and mountains of Scotland. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
But the wind's the most disruptive element of Storm Henry. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
Late Monday, Monday night into early Tuesday | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
so do keep in touch with the situation near you. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
There will be more disruption. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Still very windy, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
especially across Scotland on Tuesday, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
as Storm Henry moves off towards Scandinavia | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
so we're in the colder air on Tuesday. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
Plenty of showers pushing into the west, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
again, wintry in nature. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
The effect of that low pressure | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
moving away is to draw back in, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
just like Gertrude did, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
cold air southwards across the UK. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
And actually, for a time after Henry's gone, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
we're in that colder, quieter weather | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
so that includes much of Tuesday, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
especially into Wednesday as well. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
This is the big picture for Wednesday. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Not yet seeing these weather systems | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
coming in from the Atlantic | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
so there'll be overnight frost, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
there'll be icy patches possible. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
There'll be further showers | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
coming into the north-west of the UK, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
wintry at least on hills | 0:02:46 | 0:02:47
but potentially to lower levels in places too. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
But then by the end of Wednesday going into Thursday, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
that next weather system from the Atlantic | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
is beginning to show its hand. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
So, for much of the week coming, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
we are in the colder air | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
because the jet stream has dipped | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02
a little bit further south | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
but then as that next weather system | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
comes in later in the week, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
the jet stream starts to push | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
its way further north again. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
But, of course, the jet stream | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
throughout is close to the UK, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
it is the source of wet and windy weather systems | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
coming in from the Atlantic | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
so we are expecting another one | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
later in the week | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
with more wind and rain | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
not expected as yet | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
to be as fierce as Henry. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
And for the second week of February, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
something colder for longer is possible | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
and we'll keep an eye on that. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
Repeated warnings... | 0:03:42 | 0:03:43
The Government thought it was the right thing to do. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
..allegations and accusations... | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47 |
