We're heading into a different month, but it is the same weather - | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
changeable, sometimes stormy. In fact, much as we saw in January. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
Let's take a moment to look back at January's weather. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
It started with scenes like this, more flooding, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
this time in eastern Scotland. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
Aberdeenshire had its wettest January on record. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
Looking at the UK as a whole, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
provisionally for the month the Met Office says January was wetter | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
and milder than average. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
Not quite as wet or as mild as December, mind you. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
It had these big swings of temperature, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
the coldest weather of the winter so far, minus 12 in Highland Scotland, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
but near 17 Celsius at times. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
There are more swings in the weather on the way this week, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
but the main focus as the week begins is the strength of wind, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
another named storm coming our way, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Storm Henry winding itself up in the Atlantic. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
We think those winds will peak on Monday night in Scotland, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
which is covered, much of Scotland, by a Met Office | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
amber "be prepared" warning | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
for the disruption that Henry is likely to cause. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
As Monday begins, northern England, Northern Ireland, Scotland already | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
seeing some gusts around 50, 60mph, winds strengthening across the UK. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
A weakening band of rain heading south, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
cloudy throughout in south-east England. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Elsewhere, sunny spells developing, but showers, hail, thunder possible, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
wintry on hills again in Scotland as colder air starts to spread south. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
Again, those winds strengthening all the time, really rattling | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
through the mountains of North Wales, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:21
particularly northern England, Northern Ireland, 60, 70mph gusts. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
But in Scotland, late in the afternoon to the evening | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
and night, 70 to 80mph gusts possibly even in the central | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
belt, and in the far north and north-west up to 90mph. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
Big, dangerous waves crashing into the coastline here, as well. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
So a nasty storm with disruption likely to continue into the first | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
part of Tuesday as Henry only slowly moves off towards Scandinavia. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
So, on Tuesday, then, a very windy start, winds slowly easing, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
sunshine and showers, a colder feel, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
so a wintry flavour to those showers, particularly on hills. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
Strong winds may come back to parts of Northern Ireland, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
north-west England, North Wales late in the day. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
That's something we'll keep an eye on. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
But going into Wednesday, there's a gap in-between weather systems | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
and a brief ridge of high pressure, something quieter coming our way. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
A colder day on Wednesday. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
There'll probably be frost to start and end the day, some sunshine. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
If you like dry, sunny weather, this is the better day of the week. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
So for a time, we can relax. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
But not for long. This very active jet stream pushing weather systems | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
across the Atlantic has another one for us Thursday into Friday. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
Initially on Thursday, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
it'll be a warm front spreading northwards with | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
outbreaks of rain, more cloud around, of course, with that and | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
temperatures starting to head up, so getting back into the milder air. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Only briefly, though, because by Friday, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
this deep area of low pressure - not quite as deep, we think, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
as Henry but still making it very windy, especially in Scotland - | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
will move to the north of the UK | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
on Friday, driving a band of heavy rain southwards, sunshine, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
showers following on behind with colder air once again | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
but another windy day on Friday. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
That's what I mean by the changeable weather continuing into February. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
We're going to start, of course, stormy with Storm Henry, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
but then something a bit quieter but colder | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
settling in for the middle of the week, but it doesn't last long | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
as we get more wet and windy weather coming back for the end of the week. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
Now, going into next weekend, as this latest wet and windy | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
weather system moves away, it drags colder air back in across the UK. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Next weekend, into the start of the second week of February, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
still unsettled but looking colder. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
There's a chance in the second week of February of something colder | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
but more settled coming our way... | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
briefly. Briefly will be better than not at all. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30 |
