Hello there. It seemed we barely had time to catch our breath | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
after Storm Gertrude left the UK before hot on its | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
heels was Storm Henry, our eighth named storm of the winter season. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
It made for some dramatic Weather Watchers' pictures, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
but it also brought some damaging gusts of wind. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
And in fact, we will continue to see those damaging | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
gusts of wind for the first half of Tuesday. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Severe gales, perhaps storm force, into the far north, slowly | 0:00:24 | 0:00:29
easing down through the afternoon but still a windy day for all of us. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
On top of that, there will be some relentless rain and some | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
snow to the tops of mountains, blizzard-like conditions here. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
A scattering of showers along west-facing coasts, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
but some brightness elsewhere, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
but a windy afternoon and temperatures struggling, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
perhaps, to get into double figures, six to ten degrees at the very best. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:51
Now, as we move out of Tuesday into Wednesday, we will continue to see | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
the remnants of Henry with this dying weather front as it | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
continues to push its way steadily south. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
For a time, winds will strengthen through the Irish Sea, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
affecting north-west England, and on the leading edge we could see | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
some snow across the Pennines and perhaps higher ground of Wales. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
More importantly, behind it a colder night to come with | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
a widespread frost and maybe some ice on untreated surfaces. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
So, we start off on Wednesday with the remnants of that dying | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
weather front, but it is a dying one | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
and just really a band of cloud by the middle of the day | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
on Wednesday, with the odd spot or two of showery rain. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
After that chilly start, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
there'll be some sunshine into the far north as the winds swing | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
round to a north-westerly direction, so a cooler feel here, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
four or five degrees. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
To the south of that band of cloud | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
we should see temperatures sitting at around eight or nine. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
As we move into Thursday, still a quieter story. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
There is the potential for persistent rain in the north-west. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
We'll need to keep an eye on that. It may lead to localised flooding. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
And again, the winds swing back to a south-westerly, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
driving in milder air. Temperatures return back to double figures. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
Another weather front waiting in the wings for Friday. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
And there is a level of uncertainty as to the timings of this weather | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
front and how quickly it's going to sink its way south and east. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
More importantly, it's dragging in milder southerly air for a time, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
and there will be heavy rain, as well, we'll need to keep an eye on. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
But as that weather front sinks south and east - | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
and, as I say, timing's a little uncertain at the moment - | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
I need to draw your attention to this area of low pressure | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
developing into the south-west. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
That could cause some issues as we move into the weekend. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
If you've got weekend plans, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
you'll need to keep abreast of the weather forecast. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
One thing is for certain - | 0:02:27 | 0:02:28
as that front does continue to clear its way south and east, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
yet again it will allow colder air to flood back in across the country. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
The jet stream is going to be sitting to the southern | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
flank of the UK, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
allowing that colder air from Iceland to filter further south. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:45
But we talk about the jet stream as this ribbon of fast-moving | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
air driving areas of low pressure towards the UK, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
so there's the potential of that low that we were | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
talking about down into the south-west to | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
move across the southern portion of the UK into the weekend. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
If that happens, we could see some windy weather, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
and for a time, as it bumps into the cold air, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
we might on the leading edge see a little bit of snow, as well. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
That's why I say keep watching the forecast. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
However, we are expecting the jet stream to then drift further | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
north and sit across the UK, and then it's all change yet again. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:17
So, into the first half of next week, it looks as though | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
it'll be windy, showery with milder temperatures starting to develop. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
Anywhere to the north of that jet stream will stay cold, to the | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
south a little bit warmer. That's it. Take care. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30 |
