04/02/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. We've just had a spell

of slightly quieter weather through the middle of the week,

but things are going to turn more unsettled once again.

Next week, it looks as if we might have to batten down the hatches

once more. This is just cloud streaming in

off the Atlantic.

It'll bring us cloudy conditions

and rain during Thursday,

but it will be mild -

it has felt quite chilly in the last few days.

Double-figure temperatures

across the South-west, Wales,

possibly Northern Ireland,

but for Eastern England and the North-east of Scotland,

here, barely above freezing

first thing on Thursday.

If anything, the rain might become

more widespread,

at least across Western and Central Scotland,

but these are mild south-westerly winds

so the milder air sitting here

will slowly claw itself

towards the east and north,

so, for most of England, Wales

and Northern Ireland,

it's a relatively mild day,

but for the north and east of Scotland,

it'll stay chilly.

Friday - south-westerly winds

mean that mild air

will reach areas as far north as Newcastle,

possibly southern Scotland.

There is some rain in the forecast -

through Scotland, Northern Ireland -

that is a weather front that will sweep across

the country second half of Friday,

through the early hours of Saturday.

Here it is -

that weather front sweeping across,

but then we've got this to look forward to,

unfortunately. Quite a nasty area

of low pressure -

strong winds and heavy rain

later on Saturday.

The east might get away with some sunshine

but many of these western approaches

and the Channel coastline,

it'll be a blustery day, if not gale-force winds.

Sunday, we start to see that area of low pressure

clear away. A brief gap in the weather

before this low arrives on Monday,

so enjoy Sunday,

that brief gap in the weather.

There might be some sunshine,

particularly across eastern areas,

but as early as mid-afternoon,

we start to see more rain and winds

sweeping in off the Atlantic,

so you get that feel that things will be changing

quite a lot. Here's that huge low -

I'll step out of the way.

It's from this side of the Atlantic

all the way to the Baltic,

so a large swathe of some very strong winds

blowing through the UK.

Steady with the umbrellas -

there'll be some blustery showers.

The reason for it is the jet stream.

This is what most of next week will look like -

this powerful jet stream blowing across the Atlantic,

sending one area of low pressure after the other,

but it does look as though it's the beginning of next week

that'll be the windiest,

might even be stormy across some exposed areas of the UK.

With the jet stream slicing the UK,

we'll be on the cusp of the colder air to the north

and the milder air to the south,

so we might get shots of slightly milder air,

then little shots of colder air, then milder air.

One thing's for sure - it'll be rough,

particularly across western and southern areas.
