05/02/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

If you were watching this time yesterday,

we were promising you lots of blustery weather

and that still remains the case in the forecast

for the weather for the week ahead.

The next few days will see lots of cloud

rolling off the Atlantic,

rain at times and very strong winds as well.

In fact, a daisy chain of low pressures coming our way

and actually, this time it's more southern areas of the UK

that are likely to get those gale-force winds.

In the short term, it's not too bad, at least on Friday.

Early in the morning we'll see cloud sweeping in off the Atlantic.

It'll be very mild throughout the width

and the breadth of the country.

This is what it looks like

first thing for the early birds -

outbreaks of rain across Scotland,

getting into Northern Ireland as well and as I said,

it'll be mild, nine degrees there in Glasgow.

At this stage,

the winds already starting to strengthen in the north-west here.

Not too windy inland or the east of the country.

Here I think it's just cloudy,

maybe a few glimmers of brightness.

By the same token, also a few spots of rain.

around ten degrees for Newquay as well,

Then as we go through the course of Friday morning,

those winds will start to strengthen.

These are mild south-westerlies.

Could be a little bit of brightness to the east of the UK,

but I think generally speaking,

the weather will be going downhill.

This band of weather will be approaching

many western areas of the UK.

Behind it, we'll start to see temporarily colder air

coming into Scotland and Northern Ireland, so perhaps a chilly evening

across this part of the country,

but the weather front may actually bring

40mm of rain in one or two areas

for south-western Scotland and also Cumbria.

Now, the weekend itself - very windy for sure,

and also it'll be particularly wet, I think on Saturday.

I indicated at the beginning of the forecast

that it's more southern areas

that really will get the strong winds

and this is certainly reflected in this pressure pattern for Saturday,

the isobars really tightly packed across the south,

so that means gale-force winds sweeping Cornwall, Devon

the West Country generally, Wales,

along the central southern coastline

and also lots of rain with that too.

Further north, maybe not quite so windy,

but there will be plenty of rain about,

at least at one point or another during the day,

so take your brolly just in case.

Then Sunday - a little bit better.

Windy inland to.

Yesterday, we were predicting a big low pressure

to be barrelling across this part of the Atlantic.

That still remains the case.

A lot of wind out there heading our way

for the beginning of next week.

Through Monday and Tuesday,

these are the approximate temperatures.

Those strong gusts of wind could even be disruptive,

so that's something that we'll be keeping a close eye on.

This jet stream which is driving

the areas of low pressure

and the strong winds continues through much of next week.

That still remains the case,

certainly compared to yesterday's forecast, nothing has changed here.

But maybe there's just a hint,

just an indication that towards the end of next week,

since the jet stream's fairly close to us,

we're just on that cusp of the colder air,

we're on that other side of the jet stream,

so perhaps a little bit of this colder weather heading our way

towards the end of next week,

but it's just a hint at the moment.

It could equally actually turn mild.
