Hello. The outlook since yesterday's Weather For The Week Ahead

0:00:030:00:06

hasn't really changed, a lot of blustery weather on the way.

0:00:060:00:08

In fact, for the next week or so, we'll see spells of rain

0:00:080:00:12

and some really gusty winds, and I think the south

0:00:120:00:14

particularly is going to get some really strong winds,

0:00:140:00:16

because in the last few weeks or so

0:00:160:00:18

we haven't seen frequent gales across the south at all.

0:00:180:00:21

This is the broad message,

0:00:210:00:23

low pressure after low pressure heading our way

0:00:230:00:25

and a large swathe of strong winds waiting out there

0:00:250:00:28

in the Atlantic accompanied by heavy, rain-bearing clouds, as well.

0:00:280:00:33

So, this is the satellite picture in the last day or so,

0:00:330:00:36

clouds churning away there, weather systems heading in our direction,

0:00:360:00:39

and already from Saturday morning it's a case of gale-force

0:00:390:00:43

winds around many of the south-western coasts

0:00:430:00:45

and some pretty heavy rain.

0:00:450:00:46

We could see up to 50, 60,

0:00:460:00:48

maybe 70 millimetres of rain in the south-west

0:00:480:00:50

and, on top of that, 50 to 60mph gusts,

0:00:500:00:53

and some of these stronger ones will be also realised further

0:00:530:00:56

inland, as well.

0:00:560:00:58

Now, the heavy rain in the south-west will move

0:00:580:01:00

eastwards through Saturday,

0:01:000:01:02

so areas further east will also get some rain but not until later on.

0:01:020:01:06

In fact, Saturday night, a really blustery end to the evening

0:01:060:01:10

there, I think, across the east of the country.

0:01:100:01:12

And then come Sunday, it's another very unsettled day,

0:01:120:01:15

a mixture of sunshine,

0:01:150:01:17

showers then sunshine again right from the word go,

0:01:170:01:20

maybe some wintry ones across the higher ground in Scotland, and

0:01:200:01:23

a really gusty sort of day, gales for sure around some of the coasts.

0:01:230:01:27

Winds could be approaching again 60mph, inland around about 50,

0:01:270:01:31

but there will be some sunshine around on Sunday.

0:01:310:01:33

It's not looking too bad if you're sheltered from the wind

0:01:330:01:35

and the showers.

0:01:350:01:37

From the Midlands eastwards you could get a decent

0:01:370:01:39

spell of brightness.

0:01:390:01:40

Early next week, it's the same thing over and over again.

0:01:400:01:43

It's like the weather's a stuck record.

0:01:430:01:45

We keep getting low pressures off the Atlantic.

0:01:450:01:47

In fact, this is still the same one that's sitting across the UK.

0:01:470:01:51

A lot of lines here, these pressure lines, isobars,

0:01:510:01:53

so that means a rush of wind racing in off the Atlantic.

0:01:530:01:56

Here's Monday. Plenty of showers across western and southern areas.

0:01:560:02:00

We'll get some in the east, but I think they'll be most frequent

0:02:000:02:03

across the west and the south, and of course those strong gusts of wind

0:02:030:02:06

buffeting us through the course of Monday.

0:02:060:02:09

Tuesday, the wind changes direction a little bit.

0:02:090:02:12

It briefly comes in from the north. It follows the isobars,

0:02:120:02:15

so you can imagine the winds coming in from the north.

0:02:150:02:17

That means it will turn briefly a little bit cooler across the

0:02:170:02:20

northern half of the UK, five or six degrees,

0:02:200:02:23

single-figure temperatures, in fact, for most of us, and

0:02:230:02:25

it'll be another blustery day with a mixture of sunshine and showers.

0:02:250:02:29

Now, something quieter is heading our way, but I think it's just going

0:02:290:02:33

to be the one day next week, and at the moment it looks like Wednesday.

0:02:330:02:37

But it's only a very small window of opportunity.

0:02:370:02:40

We've got this mini area of high pressure over us,

0:02:400:02:42

otherwise known as a ridge, and that's going to give us

0:02:420:02:45

a fairly settled day with lighter winds but a cool one in the

0:02:450:02:49

north, four or five degrees, just about nine or ten in the south.

0:02:490:02:52

And then we start all over again.

0:02:520:02:54

From the end of next week, this jet stream

0:02:540:02:56

starts spawning more areas of low pressure,

0:02:560:02:59

quite vigorous ones, as well, which means gusty winds.

0:02:590:03:02

Gales are certainly a possibility.

0:03:020:03:04

Now, yesterday I was suggesting that maybe towards the end of

0:03:040:03:07

the week we could see some colder air sinking in from the north, but

0:03:070:03:10

at the moment it does look as though the milder air is going to win.

0:03:100:03:13

We are just going to be on the cusp of that cold and milder air, but

0:03:130:03:17

the thing is that after this quieter spell midweek it does look as

0:03:170:03:20

though those low pressures will once again start to

0:03:200:03:23

bring in the mild, wet and windy weather once again.

0:03:230:03:26

So just one day, Wednesday, we're thinking, should be the quieter day.
