Worth staying with us here at the BBC Weather Centre

0:00:020:00:05

over next few days. A few twists and turns ahead.

0:00:050:00:07

A fascinating week of weather to come.

0:00:070:00:09

We start with some dramatic contrasts across the UK.

0:00:090:00:11

Very mild in the South, pretty cold in the North

0:00:110:00:14

and that is reflected in the temperatures -

0:00:140:00:16

4 to 14. Mind you,

0:00:160:00:17

through this week the cold air floods southwards.

0:00:170:00:20

It does look like being a pretty chilly week to come.

0:00:200:00:23

Not just yet across the southern half of the UK.

0:00:230:00:25

Sunday will be another mild day,

0:00:250:00:27

mild and cloudy and blustery.

0:00:270:00:28

Some dribs and drabs out West.

0:00:280:00:31

Further north we have a frontal zone of rain

0:00:310:00:32

for Northern Ireland, Southern Scotland

0:00:320:00:34

and some northern parts of England.

0:00:340:00:36

Some of it quite persistent and heavy.

0:00:360:00:38

To the North of that, though,

0:00:380:00:40

a wintry scene across the northern half of Scotland.

0:00:400:00:42

Frequent sleet and snow showers down to quite low levels.

0:00:420:00:45

Cold rain across Southern Scotland,

0:00:450:00:46

and parts of Northern Ireland.

0:00:460:00:48

Some pretty wet weather for Cumbria

0:00:480:00:50

and North Lancashire in particular.

0:00:500:00:51

To the South of that, just dribs and drabs

0:00:510:00:54

up over the high ground across Western areas

0:00:540:00:56

but further east mostly dry and if you see any brightness,

0:00:560:00:58

14, possibly 15 degrees.

0:00:580:01:00

It will be very windy, very blustery,

0:01:000:01:02

particularly across parts of Wales and the Midlands.

0:01:020:01:04

And then through the night everything heads Southwards

0:01:040:01:07

so eventually some pretty heavy rain will turn up

0:01:070:01:09

across Southern areas as we go into Monday.

0:01:090:01:11

There's some uncertainty about how quickly that clears away

0:01:110:01:14

but following on behind brighter skies -

0:01:140:01:16

with that colder air comes in as well

0:01:160:01:18

so, for many, temperatures will be

0:01:180:01:20

dropping by several degrees,

0:01:200:01:22

down into single figures just about nationwide

0:01:220:01:24

on Monday afternoon.

0:01:240:01:25

Further sleet and snow showers across

0:01:250:01:27

the northern part of Scotland in particular.

0:01:270:01:29

As we go into Tuesday most of us will be dry and bright,

0:01:290:01:33

if chilly, with some wintry showers

0:01:330:01:34

around exposed Northern areas.

0:01:340:01:36

A question mark still about that front across Southernmost areas.

0:01:360:01:39

It might just come back in again

0:01:390:01:41

across parts of the South West for example

0:01:410:01:43

through Tuesday night and into Wednesday,

0:01:430:01:45

grazing perhaps across other Southern coastal areas.

0:01:450:01:48

That's one to watch

0:01:480:01:49

but I think the majority as we go through

0:01:490:01:51

Wednesday will stay dry and bright.

0:01:510:01:53

After an early frost across Northern areas,

0:01:530:01:56

here we'll see the best of the sunshine but

0:01:560:01:58

there will be further wintry showers across the exposed Northern areas.

0:01:580:02:01

Temperatures staying in single figures.

0:02:010:02:03

The coldest air of course in the North.

0:02:030:02:05

Many of us having frosty nights.

0:02:050:02:07

This could well be the scene in the morning time

0:02:070:02:09

through the middle of the week

0:02:090:02:11

but some lovely sunshine to compensate.

0:02:110:02:13

As we look towards Thursday most of us again

0:02:130:02:15

will have a dry, bright, crisp day

0:02:150:02:18

but keep your eye on this front

0:02:180:02:20

trying to push in from the west.

0:02:200:02:22

It could cloud up across Northern Ireland

0:02:220:02:24

with some rain and perhaps

0:02:240:02:25

some sleet and snow as well.

0:02:250:02:27

The progress of that is very uncertain indeed.

0:02:270:02:29

It's all being steered by this area of low pressure

0:02:290:02:32

way out in the Atlantic.

0:02:320:02:34

Now, it looks as if that low pressure

0:02:340:02:36

will depend on the behaviour of the Jet Stream.

0:02:360:02:39

If the jet dipss its way Southwards,

0:02:390:02:41

it looks like taking the main energy

0:02:410:02:43

of that low pressure with it so

0:02:430:02:45

at the end of the week it could well be

0:02:450:02:47

that that low pressure is actually

0:02:470:02:49

down here by next weekend.

0:02:490:02:51

Now, its behaviour thereafter is very important

0:02:510:02:53

to the weather next weekend because

0:02:530:02:56

that low pressure could well run up

0:02:560:02:58

towards us and through the cold air

0:02:580:03:01

which will still be in place across

0:03:010:03:03

many parts of the UK and that gives us

0:03:030:03:06

forecasters a bit of a headache.

0:03:060:03:08

It certainly does look as if,

0:03:080:03:10

with low pressure around through next weekend,

0:03:100:03:12

it'll be cold and the potential

0:03:120:03:14

for some rain to turn to snow

0:03:140:03:16

as that low moves through,

0:03:160:03:18

so watch this space.

0:03:180:03:19

To sum up, coldest in the North, no surprises there,

0:03:190:03:22

some rain and just that heads up of the risk

0:03:220:03:25

of some snow through next weekend.

0:03:250:03:28

I'll update you again tomorrow.

0:03:280:03:29

The voice you're hearing is mine.

0:03:310:03:33

It was recorded last night after I had a few pints.

0:03:330:03:36

I'm doing this to show that...
