Yesterday I mentioned what a fascinating week we have | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
ahead of us as the weather goes from one distinct mode to another. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
It felt like early spring across some parts of the UK through | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
this weekend with some sunshine and temperatures | 0:00:11 | 0:00:22
I know we are approaching March, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
but some of the coldest air over the winter so far through this week. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
There will be some sunshine - that's good news - | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
but there will be some widespread frosts at night | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
and a few wintry showers thrown in for good measure. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
In fact, we start Monday with some wintry showers across the | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
heart of Scotland, staying mostly up over the high ground. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
A wet, dismal start to the day across southern counties | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
and that rain lingering on and off for much of the day, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
particularly down towards the south coast. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
The brightest of the weather will be further north but it will be | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
chilly and those temperatures really knocked on the head | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
across the more central and southern areas compared with the weekend. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
Six or seven degrees will be typical. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
As we go through Monday night into Tuesday morning, that weather front | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
is still lurking with intent across southern coastal areas, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
so further rain, maybe a bit of sleet up over the high ground. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
A band of wintry showers pushing down across the north | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
of Scotland, but actually in between a lot of sunshine, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
bright and crisp and sunny for the most part but feeling chilly, yes. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
Five, six, seven degrees again will be typical. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
That rain finally clearing away from the south coast. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
On into Wednesday, another little band of wintry showers is | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
pushing down across the country. There could be some snowfall | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
over the high ground but it shouldn't amount to a great deal. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
The vast majority of us will stay dry with plenty of sunshine, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
but that nagging northerly breeze will knock | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
the temperatures on the head for sure. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
What you will notice through the middle part of this week is | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
some very cold nights. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
The blues take over, indicating some particularly sharp frosts | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
through the middle part of this week with clear skies and light winds. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
In fact, across the snowfields of Scotland | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
we could get as low as -10 degrees. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
And then we start to look to the west, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
with this weather front pushing in off the Atlantic. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
It's not there yet and for most of us | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
on Thursday it will be another largely dry day. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Still, a brisk wind across eastern coastal areas | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
could carry one or two wintry showers, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
but once more many of us will have fine weather. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
If you wear a few layers | 0:02:09 | 0:02:09
and get out of that breeze it shouldn't feel too bad. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
There's no doubt about it, it will be chilly, particularly | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
when those wintry showers come along. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
By Friday, those fronts trying to push in from the west | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
but slow progress and many places | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
probably again ending the week on a dry note. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
Will be a chilly one after a frosty start. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
You would expect these fronts usually to continue to come | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
in from the west but that's not the case on this occasion. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
And the reason for that is the jet stream. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
Just watch how it takes a huge diversion northwards towards | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
Greenland, and that means downstream it dips southwards and takes | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
that area of low pressure and fronts down towards France and Spain. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
This is where we think it will be next weekend. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
Now, there is a small chance that this low pressure could be | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
closer towards us and as it bumps into the cold air | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
that would give some significant snowfall, but at this stage | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
we think next weekend that low will be to the south of us | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
and what we will have is a run of brisk easterly winds, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
and really chilly winds as well with that cold air in place. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
And that theme, we think, continues into March. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
There are developments elsewhere in the atmosphere which indicate | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
that this cold spell could last some significant time | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
with the hard frosts at night and the risk of some snowfall. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
We will keep you posted and update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29 |
