Hello. This chilly weather is here to stay over the next few days. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
It's not a proper cold snap, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
but it's just about cold enough for some snow as we head into Friday. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
There could be a little bit of disruption, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
particularly across northern parts of the UK. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
First thing on Friday morning, there could be some lying snow across | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
the Pennines, the Peak District into northern parts of Wales too. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
We're on the cold side of the jet stream, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
the cold air to the north, the mild air to the south. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
You can see the jet stream is way towards the south of us | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
allowing for this cold, Arctic air to flood in across the UK. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
Hence, we will only get some sleet | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
and snow showers across the north of the country and a spell | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
of perhaps more persistent snow across central areas of the UK. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
This weather front will be very slow moving. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
That means that the wintery weather that | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
we get during the course of Friday will be very slow to clear away. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
This is what it looks like first thing in the morning. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
So, for most of us, actually we're dealing with just a rain | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
and snow mix. But for some areas, there could be a good dose of snow. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
In one or two places, we could see 5-10cm, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
but the exception will be 10-15cm | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
across the upland areas of northern Britain. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
The Peak District, for example, could get a fait bit | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
of snow as well. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
We'll stick around with this cold, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
wintery weather across northern parts of England, Wales, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
the north Midlands, right through the course of Friday. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
But take a look at the contrast across the south of the UK. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
We'll get some sunshine in Portsmouth, in London. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
Temperatures will briefly touch around 7 to 9 degrees, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
but it will certainly feel a bit colder than that. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
And also, across Scotland, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
we'll continue to see wintery showers for Friday afternoon. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Now, Friday night into Saturday. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
This weather front, again, very slow to clear. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
That means that Saturday morning, we could be waking up to some pretty | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
gloomy, cloudy, rainy weather across East Anglia, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
the East Midlands, into the south-east as well. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
Whereas many western areas will be getting some sunshine. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
That's the sort of weather we'll be getting right through Saturday. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
Eventually, Saturday night into Sunday, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
that wintery weather front pulls away, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
we see northerly winds coming in, but briefly a ridge, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
a finger of high pressure starts to nudge into the UK. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
So that means that perhaps on Saturday, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
the weather will settle down across central areas of the UK, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
but not for long, because very quickly in the evening, we'll see | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
our next weather front potentially bringing some rain, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
sleet and snow to the upland areas of north-western Britain. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
This is what it looks like on Sunday, that finger of high | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
pressure continues to build, once one weather front clears away. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
I think on Monday, for northern and western areas of the UK, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
the weather may not be too bad in the afternoon. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
We could see some residual rain | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
across the south of the country clearing away, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
but I think on balance, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
a relatively fine day with some brightness around. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
This is what the jet stream is going to be doing mid week. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
It's at a rate of knots, coming off the Atlantic, a westerly jet stream. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
That means it's going to be bringing weather from the west, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
rather than the north. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
SO the thinking is that mid week onwards, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
with high pressure to the south, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
low pressures will be carried by that jet stream bringing | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
spells of rain and the suggestion of something a little bit milder. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
So rather than the air coming all the way from the Arctic, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
it looks like the air will be coming in from the north Atlantic. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
So slightly milder, not desperately mild, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
but I think in summary from this cold, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
wintery snap that we've got right now, things are going to turn | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
just that little bit breezier with some spells of rain. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
Thanks for watching. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29 |
