Hello there. Well, many of us are being battered | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
by cold, wet and windy weather. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:07
A lot of us are crying out for some spring sunshine and a settled spell. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
Well, I have some optimism for you, on the horizon, it has to be said. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:16
Southern parts of the UK over the next 24 hours or so | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
are going to see a lot of rain | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
and various computer models indicating a very wet spell | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
during the course of Wednesday, but then look at that dry signal | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
which extends for some 10 days ahead. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Further north across the country, it might take a little bit longer | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
to settle down, so again we've run the various computer models. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
They are indicating some spells of rain over the next few days, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
the lines of blue here, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
but then again it's a dry signal for next week. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
I'll talk about the reasons | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
why in a moment, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
but we've got to get there first | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
and it's a very wet picture | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
through Wednesday, particularly | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
across the more central | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
and eastern areas, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
some hill snow thrown in | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
for good measure | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
and a cold blustery wind as well. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
The best of the sunshine | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
across the more western parts | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
of the UK - nowhere is it | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
particularly warm | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
but where it stays wet all day long, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
the temperatures will struggle | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
to get much higher than | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
four or five degrees. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
The culprit, low pressure, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
just slipping away | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
into the continent overnight | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
and into Thursday, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
a more optimistic picture. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Some early rain across eastern counties, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
but a little ridge of high pressure | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
building in for most places, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
so a lot of dry weather, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
lighter winds, more sunshine. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
It will feel rather more like early March. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
What happens next? | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
Does the dry weather hold on? | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Well, for the many of us | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
it does, as we look towards the end | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
of this week with a ridge of high pressure | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
building in, not for all, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
as I indicated earlier on, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
further pulses of rain across Northern Ireland | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
and Scotland in particular, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
courtesy of these trailing weather fronts. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
So a bit of a north-west, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
south-east split on Friday. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
The best of the sunshine | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
across more southern and eastern areas. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
Temperatures, well, not as chilly | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
as they have been. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
Some places getting up into double figures. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
As we look towards the weekend, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
even the fronts across | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
the more north-western areas | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
will tend to push away northwards | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
and that high pressure | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
beginning to assert itself | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
across many parts of the country | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
and as I mentioned, it won't be as cold as it has been. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Milder air filtering in off the Atlantic, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
most felt across the more western areas. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
That chilly air slow to lose | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
its grip across south-eastern parts | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
of England in particular. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
But this is the picture for Saturday. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
Still some pulses of rain for a time | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
across parts of western Scotland in particular, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
but a lot of dry weather | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
and with some sunshine and lighter winds | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
further south and east, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:29
it shouldn't feel too bad. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
And again on Sunday, a lot of dry weather, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
that high pressure pushing | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
those fronts away northwards. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
Cloud amounts will be quite variable | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
across the country but hopefully | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
we'll see some sunshine in many places, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
as you can see, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
up into double figures. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
Now, through next week, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
it does look as if high pressure will stay in control. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
High pressure at ground level, with the winds | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
circulating in a clockwise fashion, but it's not just at ground level, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
we think, where we're going to see high pressure dominating. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
Further up through the atmosphere, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
we're also going to see a large area of high pressure | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
plonked across the UK | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
and when you've got high pressure at the surface | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and high pressure way up in the atmosphere, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
then that high pressure tends to be much more stubborn. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
It sticks around for much longer and brings a more prolonged dry spell. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
So, to sum up, through next week, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
a dry spell of weather which is going to last some time, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
hopefully some spring sunshine, but where the skies clear overnight, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
still the possibility of some chilly, and possibly | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
frosty, mornings. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
I'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31 |
