After a fairly wintry-feeling week,

0:00:020:00:04

we are stepping into the second week of spring,

0:00:040:00:06

meteorologically speaking,

0:00:060:00:07

and things will start to feel a bit more spring-like eventually.

0:00:070:00:09

Certainly it is a cold start to this week.

0:00:090:00:12

Quite a wintry feel to things still over the next day or so

0:00:120:00:14

and then we're looking at a spell of pretty wet and windy weather

0:00:140:00:17

through the middle part of the week

0:00:170:00:19

before eventually some milder and more settled weather on the cards.

0:00:190:00:22

But before we get there, back to the here and now.

0:00:220:00:25

A cold start to Tuesday with some iciness in the north,

0:00:250:00:27

a hard frost first thing.

0:00:270:00:29

This band of cloud crosses the country bringing with it some

0:00:290:00:31

splashes of light rain, a little bit of sleet and hill snow around too.

0:00:310:00:35

But that frontal system fizzles out as it heads towards

0:00:350:00:38

the south-east during the afternoon.

0:00:380:00:40

Staying pretty cold, just 6 to 8 degrees

0:00:400:00:42

with further wintry showers packing into the north-west.

0:00:420:00:45

And then the weather gets a bit more complicated through

0:00:450:00:47

the middle part of the week, down to this developing area of

0:00:470:00:50

low pressure, you can see fairly tight isobars around that system.

0:00:500:00:53

So we are looking at a spell of wet

0:00:530:00:55

and windy weather as we head through Tuesday night and on into Wednesday.

0:00:550:00:57

But some uncertainty about the exact timing and positioning of the rain.

0:00:570:01:01

It looks like some southern and eastern parts of England,

0:01:010:01:03

in particular, we'll see some heavy rain and some significant snow,

0:01:030:01:07

even to some lower levels perhaps

0:01:070:01:09

on the northern and western edge of this low-pressure system.

0:01:090:01:12

Not just the wet weather and snow, but also some strong winds.

0:01:120:01:15

It's likely that the strongest of the winds will be

0:01:150:01:17

across the south-west of England and Wales.

0:01:170:01:19

Severe gales possible here.

0:01:190:01:21

Further north and west, we're looking at less windy conditions

0:01:210:01:24

and a bit more in the way of sunshine

0:01:240:01:25

for Northern Ireland and for Scotland.

0:01:250:01:27

But certainly, for much of England and Wales, a spell of windy

0:01:270:01:30

and wet weather through the day on Wednesday.

0:01:300:01:32

But things quieten down as we look through Wednesday night

0:01:320:01:35

into Thursday and that's all down to the fact that we've got

0:01:350:01:37

this ridge of higher pressure building in from the Atlantic.

0:01:370:01:40

So that frontal system, that low pressure,

0:01:400:01:42

squeezing away towards the east.

0:01:420:01:44

A warm front heading in, so that's importing with it

0:01:440:01:46

some milder air as we look towards the end of this week.

0:01:460:01:49

On Thursday, we are likely to see

0:01:490:01:51

some further wet and windy conditions

0:01:510:01:52

across parts of Northern Ireland, perhaps into the west of Scotland.

0:01:520:01:55

But for much of the UK, a fairly cloudy, quieter sort of day.

0:01:550:01:58

Still a little bit chilly in the east,

0:01:580:02:00

but temperatures further west back into double figures once again.

0:02:000:02:04

So we're going to be eventually waving goodbye to the blue colours,

0:02:040:02:07

the colder air mass and we're seeing the milder weather

0:02:070:02:10

moving in from the Atlantic from a south-westerly direction.

0:02:100:02:14

That means for Friday then, a fairly cloudy story.

0:02:140:02:16

We could still see a front fizzling out

0:02:160:02:18

mainly across much of the country.

0:02:180:02:19

But perhaps some wet and windy weather towards the north-west.

0:02:190:02:22

Dryer, brighter conditions likely in the south-east and we could

0:02:220:02:25

see temperatures of 12, perhaps 13 degrees or so to end the week.

0:02:250:02:29

On into Saturday, that high pressure likely to

0:02:290:02:32

establish itself across much of the country.

0:02:320:02:34

The isobars easing out too,

0:02:340:02:36

so a less windy spell of weather as we look towards the weekend.

0:02:360:02:39

Still probably a fair amount of cloud and temperatures

0:02:390:02:42

a little bit more typical of the time of year, typically around 12.

0:02:420:02:45

We could see 15 degrees or so

0:02:450:02:46

perhaps in one or two sheltered spots.

0:02:460:02:50

Then looking beyond into next week,

0:02:500:02:53

high pressure does look likely to be established across the country.

0:02:530:02:55

But, most likely that it will be out towards the south-east and that

0:02:550:02:59

will lead us to draw in this mild flow of south-westerly air.

0:02:590:03:03

A less likely scenario is that high pressure drifts up

0:03:030:03:06

towards Scandinavia and that would allow a colder feed

0:03:060:03:09

of easterly air to head in across the UK.

0:03:090:03:12

So a couple of different scenarios,

0:03:120:03:14

but it does look like things will eventually quieten down.

0:03:140:03:16

So a wintry start to the week ahead, and after that spell of wet

0:03:160:03:20

and windy weather, things will start to turn milder

0:03:200:03:22

and more settled as we look towards next week.

0:03:220:03:26

So, eventually, a little bit

0:03:260:03:27

of a taste of something more spring-like.
