You know, there's huge uncertainty in the evolution of our weather | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
next weekend, as we'll see in a moment - | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
but one thing I'm confident about, we won't see anything quite as wild | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
as we've seen over the last day or so. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
Let's have a quick recap courtesy of some of our weather-watchers | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
sending in their pictures - uprooted trees, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
there was disruption to power supplies, of course, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
there was flooding rains, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
and some places saw some significant snowfall - | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
and perhaps you have your own tale to tell. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
Katie, of course, was the culprit. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
It tore right across the heart of the UK, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
the heavy rains delivered by this swirl in the cloud, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
the strongest winds to the south of the storm's centre - | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
but Katie has whistled out into the North Sea, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
and things are returning back to normal, because in the wake of that, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
OK, we've got some fronts coming in, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
but nothing too severe, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
and although there will be breezy conditions at times, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
the winds shouldn't be too damaging, either. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
This is the way we start the day on Tuesday - | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
sunshine and showers, a brisk old wind, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
and some of these could be quite heavy, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
but they shouldn't last all that long before some wetter | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
weather gets into parts of Wales and western England. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
Some of the best of the sunshine actually further north - | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
there will be a peppering of showers, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
wintry showers up over the Highlands of Scotland, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
but nothing too extreme, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
and there'll be some sunshine in between for Scotland | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
and Northern Ireland and northern England. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
Temperatures at 6s and 7s, so, not desperately warm, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
but in the sunshine, shouldn't feel too bad. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Some sunshine, too, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
for eastern parts of England before this arc of wetter weather | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
spirals in across Wales and western England - | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
its exact position a little bit uncertain, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
but there will be a bit of snow mixed in | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
up over the Welsh mountains - and quite a gusty wind, too. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
So, the spell of wet and windy weather | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
quickly makes it way across other parts of England and Wales | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
before clearer skies follow on behind - | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
it could be quite a chilly, maybe a frosty start | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
in some places on Wednesday, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
but bags of sunshine, actually, on offer on Wednesday, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
and although there'll be a few showers dotted around, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
many of us will be dry. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
No heatwave, but in the sunshine, and with light winds, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
it should feel pretty pleasant, I reckon. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
That really does sum up things as we change the month. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
Lighter winds, we'll always see some sunshine, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
and there'll be a few April showers scattered around as well. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
Mind you, the nights will still be quite chilly - | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
in actual fact, we'll see frost | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
across more northern and central parts of the UK, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
so, gardeners take note of that - | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
we will see some pretty chilly nights. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
How long does the drier weather last? | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Well, across the more southern | 0:02:15 | 0:02:16
and eastern areas it might last into the weekend, at least, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
but further north-west this set of fronts comes in, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
bringing a rather wet and windy end to the week | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
across Northern Ireland and Scotland. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Some heavy rain, some strong winds, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
but not damaging winds, we think. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
In contrast, further south and east it'll be drier, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
it'll be brighter, it'll be warmer, too, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
temperatures getting up into the low teens - | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
and it could well be that that front kind of stalls | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
across Scotland and Northern Ireland, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
and it may begin to head back northwards again, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
whereas, for England and Wales, another dry day, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
and temperatures again on the rise, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
the wind starting to come in off the near continent - | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
the near continent, at this time of year, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
is beginning to warm up, so if you get those winds | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
coming in from the south-east, temperatures will rise. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
How long's it going to last? Well, that all hinges on the jet stream. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
You've got this little kink in the jet stream at the weekend, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
that's delivering those warmer south-easterly winds. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
However, it does look as if the jet's going to get a move on again, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
supercharged out of the USA, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
and that's probably going to iron out that kink in the jet stream, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
which does mean that any warmth will probably be quite temporary. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
Watch this space, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
because the computer models are pretty uncertain, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
but it's unlikely to last before that jet stream brings in more rain | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
from the west and temperatures will begin to ease down again. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
I'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
