Well, for most of us it's turning into a coolish end | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
to what's been a coolish month. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:07
What chance of some warmth as we head into April? | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Well, stay tuned - for some us, I've got a bit of good news. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
Not much sign of warmth, really, at the moment, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
because the jet stream is to the south of us, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
and when we lie to the north of the jet stream, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
we're very much on the chilly side of things - | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
in fact, it's been cold enough over the last couple of days | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
for some snow in the showers, and a similar story on Wednesday - | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
up over the highest ground, a bit of wintriness. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
There will be a scattering of showers around, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
but having said that, there's a good chance | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
that where you are you'll avoid the showers | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
and continue to see some fine weather. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Here's a snapshot mid-afternoon. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
You see the showers dotted around, and, yes, bit of the white stuff | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
up over the Northern Pennines | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
and perhaps the Scottish Highlands, as well, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
but some large spaces in between the showers, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
indicating that there's a good chance | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
that, where you are, you will stay dry. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Not exactly warm - | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
9 or 10 degrees in the sunnier spells, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
but, when the showers come along, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
those temperatures fall away by several degrees, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
and it feels distinctly chilly, with the wind picking up, as well. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
Now, compared to Tuesday afternoon, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
when we saw a lot of heavy rain | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
sweeping across Wales and south-west England, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
I think it will be a brighter affair - | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
not ruling out the odd shower, but plenty of sunshine mixed in, too. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
Sunshine and showers across south-east England and East Anglia. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
12 degrees at best in the London area. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
Not as warm as it will be in the subcontinent, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
with the World T20 semifinals taking place for the women | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
and for the men, England involved. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Hot and sweaty - 27 degrees even in the night-time in New Delhi. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:33
Nothing like 27 degrees back home overnight - | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
in fact, as we go through Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
many places will be having a frost. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
This could well be the scene where you are on Thursday morning. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
A cold and frosty start - | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
but at this time of year, of course, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
the sun is rising ever earlier, so, soon warming up. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
In fact, Thursday's looking like a nice day. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
Still one or two showers around, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
particularly across the more northern areas, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
but they'll be few and far between, and, for most of us, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
a lot of sunshine and light winds. It'll feel a bit more like it. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
How long does it last? | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Well, for many of us, not that long - | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
in fact, another front pushes into Northern Ireland and Scotland. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
It tries to head southwards from Friday into Saturday, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
and then it heads back northwards again - | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
it does mean that the northern half of the UK | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
can expect to see quite a lot of rain | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
as we head into the weekend. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
In contrast, further south, the rain never arrives, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
and, in any brightness, it'll feel quite pleasant | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
across the south-east, approaching the mid teens. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
Now, from Saturday into Sunday, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
that front continues to head its way northwards, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
taking the rain with it, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
an area of low pressure developing out west, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
so it's more northern and western areas | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
which are likely to catch most of the rain, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
and that'll keep the temperatures down across these areas - | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
perhaps no more than 10-12 degrees. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
However, further south and east, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
particularly if we see some sunshine, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
we could get up into the mid - possibly high - teens. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
We're going to briefly, perhaps, start to import air | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
up from near continent - a little dome of warmth. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
How long it lasts as we go into next week | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
is still very much open to question, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
but it does look as if the jet stream's going to start | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
to power in again from the Atlantic, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
push that little plume of warmth eastwards, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
and things kind of revert back to normal again | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
with those westerly winds, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
that strong jet stream delivering some outbreaks of rain again. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
So, to sum up next week, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
any plume of warmth from the continent | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
probably not lasting all that long - | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
watch this space - | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
but it looks as if the westerlies will return | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
and start to cool off again during the course of next week. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
Alex Deakin will update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
