Good evening. It's time to look further ahead with the forecast, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
to look at the trends for the next 6 to 10 days. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:12
is the weekend forecast. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
Behind it, the low pressure that brings the rain | 0:00:16 | 0:00:25
with hill snow clearing away. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Wintry showers follow. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
So ice will be a concern on Saturday morning, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
particularly in Northern Ireland, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:35
coming as hail, sleet and snow over the hills, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:44
and it drags its heels | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
for East Anglia and the south-east. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Further west, even the moors of the West Country | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
could see a smattering of snow on them, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
as could parts of the mountains of Wales. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
So it's a wintry mix. It will feel chilly, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
particularly in the showers | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
but outside, the April sun is now getting quite strong. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
the showers tend to fade away a little. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
The rain still lingers in the north | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
that wind picking up in the south-west. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
Unusually windy with gale-force winds to come here | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
holding the temperature up. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
Elsewhere, it will be a cold night, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
even some ice. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
So, Sunday is a tale | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
of three thirds, if you like. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Rain in the north and east, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
rain and very windy weather in the south and west | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
and then in between, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
despite the breeze picking up, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
a lot of dry and fine weather. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:30
And temperatures lift a little | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
because we're starting to see the effect | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
of that April sunshine. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
is not going anywhere, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
it'll be with us for much of | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
this extended period forecast. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
giving us outbreaks of rain or showers. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:52
more prevalent even further north, | 0:01:52 | 0:02:11
Well, that low pressure hasn't moved. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
So it's got to be down to the wind direction. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
We'll continue with that trend | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
throughout the rest of the period. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
But let's take a look at what's happening. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
We have the cold air across us | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
as we've had for most of the week. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
But at the moment, the land is warming up nicely, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
so in southern parts of the UK, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
where we're pulling in a south-easterly wind, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
we will see things gradually warming up by day | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
because the land mass really is reacting | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
to that stronger April sunshine. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
Whilst the wind coming in across the North Sea | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
is still chilly. This time of year, notoriously, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
is when we see the coldest weather | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
out around the coast | 0:02:46 | 0:02:47
because the sea is at its lowest temperature. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
This is an infrared satellite picture. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
It tells us about the cloud as well as the warmth. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
The whiter the picture, the colder it is. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
At this time of year, | 0:02:58 | 0:02:58
there's very little difference | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
between the land and the sea. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
But if we go through spring towards summer, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
you see the darker colours | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
where the land responds to that stronger sunshine | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
much more quickly than the cooler sea, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
so as we get those easterly winds this week, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
coming over the really quite chilly North Sea, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
most of the seas around our shores are chilly, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
but it will be notable because it's coming in off the east | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
that we won't get much warming. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
So chilly nights continue to be in the forecast, as do showers, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
but it will get a little warmer in the south. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
