Good evening. It's time to look further ahead with the forecast,

0:00:030:00:06

to look at the trends for the next 6 to 10 days.

0:00:060:00:12

is the weekend forecast.

0:00:120:00:16

Behind it, the low pressure that brings the rain

0:00:160:00:25

with hill snow clearing away.

0:00:250:00:27

Wintry showers follow.

0:00:270:00:28

So ice will be a concern on Saturday morning,

0:00:280:00:30

particularly in Northern Ireland,

0:00:300:00:35

coming as hail, sleet and snow over the hills,

0:00:350:00:44

and it drags its heels

0:00:440:00:45

for East Anglia and the south-east.

0:00:450:00:47

Further west, even the moors of the West Country

0:00:470:00:50

could see a smattering of snow on them,

0:00:500:00:52

as could parts of the mountains of Wales.

0:00:520:00:54

So it's a wintry mix. It will feel chilly,

0:00:540:00:56

particularly in the showers

0:00:560:00:59

but outside, the April sun is now getting quite strong.

0:00:590:01:03

the showers tend to fade away a little.

0:01:030:01:05

The rain still lingers in the north

0:01:050:01:08

that wind picking up in the south-west.

0:01:080:01:10

Unusually windy with gale-force winds to come here

0:01:100:01:12

holding the temperature up.

0:01:120:01:14

Elsewhere, it will be a cold night,

0:01:140:01:18

even some ice.

0:01:180:01:19

So, Sunday is a tale

0:01:190:01:20

of three thirds, if you like.

0:01:200:01:22

Rain in the north and east,

0:01:220:01:24

rain and very windy weather in the south and west

0:01:240:01:27

and then in between,

0:01:270:01:28

despite the breeze picking up,

0:01:280:01:30

a lot of dry and fine weather.

0:01:300:01:30

And temperatures lift a little

0:01:300:01:34

because we're starting to see the effect

0:01:340:01:36

of that April sunshine.

0:01:360:01:40

is not going anywhere,

0:01:400:01:41

it'll be with us for much of

0:01:410:01:42

this extended period forecast.

0:01:420:01:46

giving us outbreaks of rain or showers.

0:01:460:01:52

more prevalent even further north,

0:01:520:02:11

Well, that low pressure hasn't moved.

0:02:110:02:13

So it's got to be down to the wind direction.

0:02:130:02:15

We'll continue with that trend

0:02:150:02:17

throughout the rest of the period.

0:02:170:02:19

But let's take a look at what's happening.

0:02:190:02:21

We have the cold air across us

0:02:210:02:23

as we've had for most of the week.

0:02:230:02:25

But at the moment, the land is warming up nicely,

0:02:250:02:27

so in southern parts of the UK,

0:02:270:02:29

where we're pulling in a south-easterly wind,

0:02:290:02:32

we will see things gradually warming up by day

0:02:320:02:34

because the land mass really is reacting

0:02:340:02:36

to that stronger April sunshine.

0:02:360:02:38

Whilst the wind coming in across the North Sea

0:02:380:02:41

is still chilly. This time of year, notoriously,

0:02:410:02:44

is when we see the coldest weather

0:02:440:02:46

out around the coast

0:02:460:02:47

because the sea is at its lowest temperature.

0:02:470:02:50

This is an infrared satellite picture.

0:02:500:02:52

It tells us about the cloud as well as the warmth.

0:02:520:02:56

The whiter the picture, the colder it is.

0:02:560:02:58

At this time of year,

0:02:580:02:58

there's very little difference

0:02:580:03:00

between the land and the sea.

0:03:000:03:02

But if we go through spring towards summer,

0:03:020:03:04

you see the darker colours

0:03:040:03:05

where the land responds to that stronger sunshine

0:03:050:03:09

much more quickly than the cooler sea,

0:03:090:03:11

so as we get those easterly winds this week,

0:03:110:03:14

coming over the really quite chilly North Sea,

0:03:140:03:17

most of the seas around our shores are chilly,

0:03:170:03:20

but it will be notable because it's coming in off the east

0:03:200:03:23

that we won't get much warming.

0:03:230:03:24

So chilly nights continue to be in the forecast, as do showers,

0:03:240:03:28

but it will get a little warmer in the south.
