Good evening. It's the time of day when we look forward at the trends | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
the weather is likely to exhibit in the next six to ten days. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
Now, it's been typically April showery weather | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
during the day on Thursday, some dramatic skylines. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
This was from Reading in Berkshire and we've had hail | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
and thunder and lightning thrown into the showers, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
but they are starting to ease away now | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
and the night promises to be drier | 0:00:23 | 0:00:24
for most of us, with lighter winds. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
That'll be key, I think, tomorrow for how it feels. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
But also overnight, it will allow some frost, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
frost in the north and the west | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
and a touch of ground frost elsewhere as well | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
in the countryside. Possibly even a bit of fog first thing, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
but that should clear quite quickly | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
and a much more promising start to the day, until the afternoon, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
when the rain returns to Northern Ireland | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
and western fringes of the mainland, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
but for the bulk of mainland Scotland, an awful lot of dry | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
and bright weather around, a little bit of sunshine, | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
lighter winds making it feel more pleasant | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
than it has in recent days. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
Similarly so across northern England | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
and the bulk of England and Wales. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
It's just, as you can see, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
fringes like Pembrokeshire | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
into Anglesey, the Llyn Peninsula | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
and Cornwall starting to pick up the cloudier zone | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
with some patchy rain, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
but with lengthier dry spells and lighter winds, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
it won't feel as chilly as it has done the last two days. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
As we go through Friday evening and overnight, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
that progresses eastwards, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
so a splatter of rain for many of us, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
but it's followed by colder air, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
so we could see a smattering of snow | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
over the Pennines and the Grampians before that clears away | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
and certainly so in the showers following on behind | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
through Northern Ireland, across Wales. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
The south-west moors could see some wintry weather as well, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
possibly into Staffordshire, the Peak District, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
but there'll be some sunshine, of course, between those showers | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
and the sun is getting quite strong | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
at this time of year as well. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:39
So if you're outside the wind in the sunshine, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
outside the showers, pleasant enough. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
But, obviously, it's a chilly day, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
because the air is so cold. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Notice our weather system still stuck in the north on Sunday, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
still there for the Northern Isles | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
and our low pressure is close by | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
to the south and west, so there will be some drier weather. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
At the moment, it looks like it'll be in central areas, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
but by that stage, we're starting to pick up an easterly wind. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
That is something that will stay with us | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
in one shape or form for the next week or so, really, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
because despite clearing our weather front away, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
this low pressure anchors itself towards the south and the west. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
Some fairly unusual weather at the moment, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
because our jet stream, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
as Tom was explaining yesterday, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
is in what's called an omega block, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
so you've got really cold air | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
diving across the United States, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
then the southerly jet stream is pushing the warmer air northwards, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
then we're on the cold side of the jet at the moment, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
so we've got cold air pooling across the UK, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
hence we get some rather big showers. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
But it's unusual that you get this situation | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
where the jet stream ties in where we have the warm | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
and the cold air, but that's going to be quite significant, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
because although we have cold air across the UK, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
at this time of year, the sun is getting stronger, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
as I might have mentioned, and that's warming the continent, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
so as we start to pull in more of a south-easterly wind here | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
through the coming week, things will warm up, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
slowly but surely, in the south. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
But where we keep the more easterly wind coming over | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
what is a cold North Sea, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
the sea is at its coldest at this time of year, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
it will clearly stay chilly here, with temperatures below par. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
With that low pressure close by, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
that's going to continue to feed in showers | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
or longer spells of rain, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
so it stays unsettled for the outlook, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
with further showers around, some dramatic skylines, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
but where you have the sunny spells | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
between the showers, it'll feel really quite warm in southern areas, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
but there'll be some chilly nights, of course, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
as the cloud melts away. Bye-bye. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
