11/04/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello again. It's an interesting week ahead.

We've got a battle taking place between high and low pressure,

warm air and colder air.

This is how we start the week,

with this band of rain,

this showery rain,

roughly this sort of position.

The pivot point is across Wales,

so we'll see the rain continuing

here, but maybe edging back

to the southeast,

moving away from Northern Ireland.

For Scotland, in the west,

there will be some warm sunshine.

For the eastern side,

there will be the onshore breeze.

A lot of low cloud

and maybe one or two spots of drizzle,

so much colder here. As the rain moves away

and the sun comes out in Northern Ireland,

it will feel warmer and there will be some

warm sunshine across the northwest of England.

Ahead of the rain, 15 degrees possible

in London, but we've got this showery rain

edging back into the southeast,

late afternoon into the evening,

pushing into the Midlands,

still on and off across Wales.

A little bit brighter,

with the odd shower

for the southwest of England,

but not as windy as Sunday.

The stronger winds are further north

an easterly breeze ahead of this rain.

This rain will edge its way northwards

across England and Wales,

up towards southern Scotland

and back into Northern Ireland.

Not too cold overnight.

Should about escape a frost.

Typically six or seven in the

towns and cities.

The major driver of the weather

for the start of the week is this low pressure -

it's a long way away but it's a bit one -

and around it we're spiralling these

weather fronts and bands of rain.

On Tuesday, the rain is a bit further north -

Northern Ireland, southern Scotland,

northern England -

a lot of low cloud as well. South of it,

some sunshine. Much lighter winds.

Then we're going to pop off some

heavy thundery downpours.

Very hit and miss. Here's where we've got

the highest temperatures,

whereas across northern England, Scotland,

Northern Ireland we're struggling

to make double figures

and a keener wind blowing too.

Tuesday into Wednesday,

the low pressure is still there,

the weather front is roughly

in the same sort of place.

The rain coming and going

across southern Scotland, Northern Ireland

and northern England.

Maybe it's a little bit further south,

but in more southern parts of England,

sunshine triggering some more thundery downpours

and it's here we'll see

the highest temperatures.

Still that contrast between mid-teens

to something nearer eight or nine

for northern England, Scotland

and perhaps northern Ireland.

We're going to find that

colder air sinking southwards

later on in the week.

Northerly breeze,

so any of this showery rain will

push down towards southern parts

of England and Wales,

maybe into the Midlands,

and temperatures start to

drop off from the north.

That's because the low pressure is retreating,

high pressure is toppling in from the Atlantic

and around that high pressure

we draw down a northerly breeze,

dragging in the cooler air.

Stronger wind down those North Sea

coasts on Friday,

one or two showers, but some sunshine.

Most places will be dry,

but temperatures only seven degrees

in Newcastle, for example.

Now let's head further afield,

into the weekend,

and the high pressure is going to

exert its influence over the weekend,

keeping it generally fine and dry,

but the nights will be quite chilly

as well.

We've got some milder air

not far away and, at one stage,

it looked like the milder air

was going to come our way.

But over the weekend,

it's the colder air that will remain

across the UK,

but it will be largely dry.

Looking further ahead,

the high pressure could retreat

back into the Atlantic,

allowing that low pressure

that was in the southwest

to come closer to the UK.

Not all the computer models agree,

but if that happens,

it will turn milder,

but it will turn wetter,

particularly for the western side

of the UK. Goodbye.
