It might be a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
All sorts of weather coming in our direction, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
much of it of a rather wintry flavour. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
Yeah, there will be some pleasant sunshine at times | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
and, occasionally, it might even feel like late April. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
But there will be some pretty wet weather. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Not just showers, some longer spells of rain at times. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
Some strong winds, too. Gales battering some coasts. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
And, yes, would you believe, some significant snowfall. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
And overnight frost a continuing hazard, too. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
The reason for this chilly weather - | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
northerly winds coming down from the Arctic. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
If anything, over the next couple of days, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
those northerlies are going to get even colder. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
Carrying lumps of cloud down in our direction, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
and that cloud generating some showers. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
Here's the picture first thing on Monday morning. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
A scattering of showers. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
There'll be some pleasant sunshine out there, too. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
But wintry showers across the north of Scotland, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
and some of that wintry weather | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
will be heading its way into northern England through the day. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
Gales setting in across the far north. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
At the other end of the UK, with some shelter, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
temperatures will reach respectability. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
12 or 13 degrees. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
But 6 degrees across the north of Scotland. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Add on a gale-force wind, it's going to feel quite bitter. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
Unusually cold air for the time of year. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
And the risk of snow showers extends all the way down the east coast | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
as we head into Tuesday morning. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
Don't be at all surprised | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
if you wake up to a covering of snow here first thing | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
with those are very, very strong winds near the coast. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
So significant wind chill. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
The snow will melt by day, on low ground at least. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
And, actually, a lot of sunshine further west. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
But nowhere will it be warm. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
If you reach double figures on Tuesday, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
you'll be doing very well indeed. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
Now, the low pressure responsible for the strong winds | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
will head off into the near continent, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
but still pretty blustery on Wednesday | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
around the eastern side of the UK, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
and further quite heavy showers to come. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
Once more, the best of the dry and bright weather | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
probably further west. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
Even here, there'll be one or two showers. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
And, again, they will be wintry up over the high ground. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Temperatures really struggling. 6, 7, 8 degrees. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
When the showers come along, of course, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
the temperatures falling away even further than that. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Watch out for frost overnight. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Thursday's picture very complicated. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
We're kind of surrounded by areas of low pressure. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
Getting the timing of these will not be easy. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
But I'm sure you get the gist. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
There'll be some wet weather around. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
Looks as if the southern half of the UK | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
could see a longer spell of rain. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
Not just rain, a period of snow, perhaps, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
for the high ground of Wales, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
which, again, will tend to turn back to rain through the daytime. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
Maybe a little bit drier further northwards, but don't bank on it. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
Temperatures, again, poor for the time of year. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
On into Friday, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
another batch of wet weather looks like coming in from the west, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
and once more, the position of that is going to tax us forecasters, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
so don't take this chart too literally. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
It just gives a flavour of some rather wet, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
chilly, windy weather once more as we end of the week. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
Cold air still in control. The blues dominating. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
But I want to point out the fact | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
that the supply of Arctic air all the way from the North Pole | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
has now been cut off, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
so the cold air is kind of getting isolated. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
And at this time of year, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
cold air that just sits there begins to warm out day by day | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
unless it's recharged by fresh Arctic air. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
So perhaps not just so cold with time next weekend. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
Somewhat milder conditions trying to spread in off the Atlantic, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
but moist air as well, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
so don't expect things to dry out in a hurry. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
We could see further fronts coming in through next weekend | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
with further outbreaks of rain. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
So let's sum all that up, because as we head into early May, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
that less chilly theme, I think, holds true. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
But further wet weather likely. Some sunshine. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
And certainly no signs of anything particularly hot on the horizon. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
We'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
