19/05/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Thanks for joining me. We've been forecasting an unsettled week

and it's certainly turning out to be like that, from the showers,

the downpours of Wednesday, to a bit of sunshine on Thursday -

not for everybody, though - then by the time we get to the weekend,

looks like the raincoats and umbrellas will be out again

and a mix of whether heading our way. It's very changeable

because these weather systems keep on forming out in the Atlantic,

they're being pushed in our direction

by this undulating jet stream,

a trough here, a ridge, another trough and another ridge again.

When we get this sort of snaky pattern,

we get lots of weather systems forming out there in the Atlantic.

That's what actually happens with the atmosphere,

it's the up-and-down motion that creates all these weather systems

and then if the jet stream's strong enough,

it pushes the weather systems in our direction

and here's another one, another front heading our way for Thursday.

There will be a bit of a west-east split during the afternoon,

so we've got the cloud and rain

across some of these south-western parts although I think

in Cornwall and Devon it's not going to be too wet,

just light bits and pieces of rain.

Could end up being actually a fine day across the south-east,

East Anglia, most of the Midlands

and quite possibly into Yorkshire as well,

Middlesbrough, some sunshine there,

Newcastle just about getting away with it,

but head a little bit further west and north and it's looking soggy,

in fact, pretty chilly across parts of Scotland.

Within that rain, very little sunshine obviously there,

so temperatures only around 11 degrees,

but once the rain band moves through Northern Ireland, you can see

the temperatures recover a little bit, up to around 15 Celsius.

The rain across Wales probably heaviest in the hills.

Further south it will be only light and patchy.

Then as we head into Friday, we're still close to that low pressure,

so the weather will remain fairly unsettled

in north-western parts of Scotland here.

Some showers, I think, for the Western Isles,

showers maybe getting into the Lowlands too,

but for many of us it's actually going to be not a bad day.

Some sunshine there for most of England

until this next weather system arrives later on in the day,

and actually, this weather system here

will splash its way across the UK during the course of Friday night,

so if you are out Friday night, expect some rain,

and here's the weather system pushing through

during the Friday evening hours

and into early Saturday as well.

So, Saturday, I think by the time we get up,

most of this rain here will be out in the North Sea.

The low pressure still close by,

still a bit of a breeze coming out of the south-west around it

and some showers, but there will be some sunshine too,

so certainly not raining all the time.

Sunday, some uncertainty exactly how much rainfall we're going to get

and where the rain is going to fall.

I think the best message for Sunday

is take a brolly if you're out for any lengthy period of time.

There will be some sunshine around

but those showers could strike almost at any time,

then it starts to settle down a little bit on Monday,

quite a cool north-westerly breeze,

and high pressure starts to build

just to the west of our neighbourhood,

so that does mean that for Monday-Tuesday,

things do turn a little bit drier and quieter

before, the current thinking is,

low pressure starts to form to the south-west of us

and gets pushed in our direction once again,

so that high pressure doesn't linger for very long early in the week,

and then later in the week, that low looks as though it's going to win,

but at least with the wind spiralling light,

so you can just about imagine it scoops up some warm air

and sends it in our direction,

so there is quite a bit of uncertainty with these highs

and lows, when the high arrives and fades away, but at least we know

it is going to be relatively warm. Bye-bye.
