Thanks for joining me. We've been forecasting an unsettled week | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
and it's certainly turning out to be like that, from the showers, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
the downpours of Wednesday, to a bit of sunshine on Thursday - | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
not for everybody, though - then by the time we get to the weekend, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
looks like the raincoats and umbrellas will be out again | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
and a mix of whether heading our way. It's very changeable | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
because these weather systems keep on forming out in the Atlantic, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
they're being pushed in our direction | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
by this undulating jet stream, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
a trough here, a ridge, another trough and another ridge again. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
When we get this sort of snaky pattern, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
we get lots of weather systems forming out there in the Atlantic. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
That's what actually happens with the atmosphere, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
it's the up-and-down motion that creates all these weather systems | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
and then if the jet stream's strong enough, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
it pushes the weather systems in our direction | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
and here's another one, another front heading our way for Thursday. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
There will be a bit of a west-east split during the afternoon, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
so we've got the cloud and rain | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
across some of these south-western parts although I think | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
in Cornwall and Devon it's not going to be too wet, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
just light bits and pieces of rain. | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
Could end up being actually a fine day across the south-east, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
East Anglia, most of the Midlands | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
and quite possibly into Yorkshire as well, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
Middlesbrough, some sunshine there, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
Newcastle just about getting away with it, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
but head a little bit further west and north and it's looking soggy, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
in fact, pretty chilly across parts of Scotland. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
Within that rain, very little sunshine obviously there, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
so temperatures only around 11 degrees, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
but once the rain band moves through Northern Ireland, you can see | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
the temperatures recover a little bit, up to around 15 Celsius. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
The rain across Wales probably heaviest in the hills. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
Further south it will be only light and patchy. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
Then as we head into Friday, we're still close to that low pressure, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
so the weather will remain fairly unsettled | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
in north-western parts of Scotland here. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
Some showers, I think, for the Western Isles, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
showers maybe getting into the Lowlands too, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
but for many of us it's actually going to be not a bad day. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
Some sunshine there for most of England | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
until this next weather system arrives later on in the day, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
and actually, this weather system here | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
will splash its way across the UK during the course of Friday night, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
so if you are out Friday night, expect some rain, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
and here's the weather system pushing through | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
during the Friday evening hours | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
and into early Saturday as well. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
So, Saturday, I think by the time we get up, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
most of this rain here will be out in the North Sea. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
The low pressure still close by, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
still a bit of a breeze coming out of the south-west around it | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
and some showers, but there will be some sunshine too, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
so certainly not raining all the time. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
Sunday, some uncertainty exactly how much rainfall we're going to get | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
and where the rain is going to fall. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
I think the best message for Sunday | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
is take a brolly if you're out for any lengthy period of time. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
There will be some sunshine around | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
but those showers could strike almost at any time, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
then it starts to settle down a little bit on Monday, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
quite a cool north-westerly breeze, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
and high pressure starts to build | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
just to the west of our neighbourhood, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
so that does mean that for Monday-Tuesday, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
things do turn a little bit drier and quieter | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
before, the current thinking is, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
low pressure starts to form to the south-west of us | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
and gets pushed in our direction once again, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
so that high pressure doesn't linger for very long early in the week, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
and then later in the week, that low looks as though it's going to win, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
but at least with the wind spiralling light, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
so you can just about imagine it scoops up some warm air | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
and sends it in our direction, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
so there is quite a bit of uncertainty with these highs | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
and lows, when the high arrives and fades away, but at least we know | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
it is going to be relatively warm. Bye-bye. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
