Hello, there. Our weekend just past was one of extremes, | 0:00:00 | 0:00:04
particularly to the northern half of the UK. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
It was a windy weekend across Scotland. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
In fact, this Weather Watchers picture, sent in thankfully | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
from Peter, illustrates the damaging gusts of wind and the effect | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
that it had on Mother Nature, with a tree coming down, and in fact, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:21
in many places, we had the strongest August gusts of wind recorded. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
Perhaps even the strongest gusts of wind for the summer months. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
Cairngorm included in that, with 115mph. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
Despite the strong winds, though, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
it was an incredibly mild start to Sunday morning, with temperatures | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
into the mid-teens, so we finished the day in the high teens. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
Heads up, though - through Monday night into Tuesday morning, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
a shock to the system as temperatures fall away in Scotland. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
Close to freezing in some sheltered rural parts. Why? | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
Well, it's all due to this area of low pressure that brought the | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
stormy weather through the weekend drifting off into the North Sea. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
The wind direction swings round to more of a north-westerly. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
A fresher feel, and that's going to drag in clearer skies, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
cooler nights to come as well. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
But Monday will be a little bit more of a straightforward day. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
Breezy with scattered showers through the day. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
The showers not too heavy, and hopefully quite fleeting, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
and temperatures will recover. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
15-22 Celsius, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
so not as high in the south east as we saw over the weekend, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
but pleasant enough. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
By the time we come through Monday night, clearer skies, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
still that north westerly flow, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
with winds falling light in places and with those clearing skies, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
temperatures fall away in rural spots. We will be down to low | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
single figures in sheltered glens of Scotland, but even across the | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
north of England and Wales we could see 5-6 Celsius as well. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
Through the middle of the week, high pressure always sitting out | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
towards the west, trying to squeeze back in across the country. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Toppling across the top, we'll see these weather fronts, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
so they are going to introduce on Tuesday some showers up into | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
the far north and west, but generally speaking, for England, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Wales, and for Northern Ireland, it stays predominantly dry and fine. | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
Not as warm as it has been, but 14-22 Celsius the high. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Now, out of Tuesday into Wednesday, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
it may be that the fronts will make a little bit more of an in-road | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
across the country, so Wednesday potentially could be the | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
wettest day of the week across England and Wales. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
There will be some showery outbreaks of rain. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Just how much is still up for question, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
but there will be some rain around on Wednesday. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
13-20 Celsius the high here. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
Now, by Thursday, it looks as though those weather fronts will make more | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
of an in-road across the northern half of the country and we | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
could see the potential for some significant rainfall to the | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
extreme north west of Scotland. 40-60mm perhaps. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
So it will be a wet and a rather breezy day up into the north, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
but again the south should stay largely fine and dry, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
and with the wind swinging round to a westerly, not quite as fresh. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
Now, towards the end of the week, the high pressure starts to | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
drift back in across the southern half of the country. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
And this could have quite a significant impact as we move | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
towards the weekend. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
It does look as though the potential to see a return to | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
a south-westerly flow and drive in those warmer rushes - the warmer | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
air starts to spill back across the country. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
So it's a long way off, but there is the potential as we move towards the | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
weekend and into the early half of next week, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
we could see temperatures mid-, possibly high twenties, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
dare I say, so the early half of next week has the potential for | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
being settled for most, with some heat building and rain at times. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
The question mark could be - will we see some thundery downpours | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
to go with it? | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29 |
