Good evening, it's time to update you on our thoughts for next week | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
and the heat that is on its way, and what happens thereafter. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
But for the time being, let's have a look at what we've seen during | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
Thursday, the weather fronts have given us quite | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
a bit of rain, they are still around with us | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
on Friday in the north and the west in particular. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Tightly packed isobars, so if you're up first thing in | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
the morning, you'll notice the wind, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
particularly across Scotland, Northern Ireland and | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
northern England, and that 100mm indicative of what | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
we've seen falling through Thursday, Thursday night and into Friday. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
So, as I say, some gusty winds particularly to the east of | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
the Pennines, east of the Grampians, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
across Northern Ireland, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
driving that rain onto the hills and again just adding to those | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
totals, so not a day for heading out into the hills, and obviously | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
that will temper the feel of things, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
with temperatures only 16 to 19, but with more sunshine than | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
we saw on Thursday in the south, it will be warmer still. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
And a fine evening, it's just that then as we go through Friday night | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
we see the rain trundling southwards. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Not a great deal on it except across the Welsh hills, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
and showers follow. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
A fresher feel but again, quite a warm night in the south with | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
all the cloud, low cloud, hill fog as well, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
and the drizzly rain. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
But eventually, that should break up, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
most of us will have some sunshine and | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
a lot of dry weather this weekend, and of course it's August | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
so it will feel warm as the Winds start to ease out. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
But you can still see there's a brisk breeze in the far north | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
of the country, starting to blow that weather front away, although we | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
do linger with some cloud across southern counties of the country. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
Southern England, south Wales, first thing Saturday morning - | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
some drizzly rain, but for most of us sunny spells and | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
a scattering of showers and very few showers getting into eastern | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
Scotland, across the Midlands, into the north of England as well. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
So it will feel pleasant enough in that sunshine, 16 to 18, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
because it's fresher air. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
Still got quite a bit of cloud in the south but I think it will | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
be dry and bright for the most part. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Then we do, through Saturday night, say goodbye to that weather system. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
We've got a little ridge of high pressure building in for Sunday. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
Still some cloud mulling underneath that high pressure, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
so I can't promise wall-to-wall sunshine but it will be dry, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
it will be bright, and it will be, for most of us, some strong August | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
sunshine. Allowing the temperatures to get between the high teens and | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
the low 20s. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
But thereafter, the heat really starts to build, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
as that high takes hold, we pick up this southerly wind, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
that high keeping our weather fronts at bay, instead we start to | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
pick up the heat that's building already across Iberia and France. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
And it's likely to get into southern counties later on Monday, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
we could see 25, 26, perhaps a little higher, and temperatures | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
starting to rise further north as well, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
less cloud around so that hot air - | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
just watch its movement, heading its way northwards, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
that southerly wind ahead of the low pressures sat in the Atlantic, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
battling that high pressure sat across the UK and further east. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
So it does look as if, by the time we get to Tuesday | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
and Wednesday, the middle part of the week, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
we will start seeing temperatures getting into the 30s. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
So it's our second spell this summer of that sort of heat but | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
it looks like a flash in the pan because it may well | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
end midweek with a thundery breakdown, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
often the case here in the UK as those weather fronts finally | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
start to move in and the heat allows some really intense downpours. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
So that's how it's looking for the middle to end of the week, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
then we may see a ridge of high pressure building in for | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
a time, but it's how long that will keep low pressure at bay out | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
in the Atlantic. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13
So really, after the early heat it looks set to turn much fresher | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
after the thundery breakdown, with some sunshine in this, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
just how long that brief ridge of high pressure can hold off | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
those low pressures and keep the showers to a minimum. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
I'll update you tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
The heat in the Den is rising. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
You're coming across as, frankly, ridiculous. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
I'm flabbergasted by that. Will they get burnt... | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38 |
