What's going on in the tropics this week may have | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
an indirect bearing on what goes on with our weather next week. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
Stay tuned, I'll fill you in in a few minutes. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
But for most of us through this week, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
plenty of dry and warm weather, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
particularly across southern and eastern areas. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Further north and west | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
there'll be more cloud at times, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
breezy conditions. There will be some rain, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
but even here there'll be | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
decent dry weather as well. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
This is how Bank Holiday Monday looks. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
Good news for many of us, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
bar the odd shower early on | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
across eastern counties | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
most of us will have a fine day | 0:00:32 | 0:00:33
with plenty of pleasant sunshine. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
We'll see thickening cloud eventually | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
across Northern Ireland and Western Scotland, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
an approaching weather system here. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
This strength in the wind keeping it cool. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
Further south and east in the sunshine | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
it should feel very pleasant indeed | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
with temperatures up in the low, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
possibly mid 20s. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
A glancing blow from this weather system | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
across the far North-West | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
as we go through the night into Tuesday. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
That should clear away | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
leaving just the odd drib and drab of rain | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
towards western coasts and hills. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
A bit of cloud still across the North-West, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
but further south and east in the sunshine | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
it'll feel very nice, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
temperatures even higher, into the mid, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
possibly high 20s across the South-East. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
Cooler and fresher to the north-west, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
with a strengthening wind. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
The next weather front coming in | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
brings a splash of rain | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
to Northern Ireland and Western Scotland, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
but as it tracks its way | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
south and east through Wednesday, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
it'll weaken, so much of the rain will fade away. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
It never really makes it to southern and eastern areas, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
so another fine day to come here | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
with temperatures again doing well. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
Behind that weather front, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
fresher conditions with blustery showers, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
particularly for the West of Scotland. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
Here's the big picture for later in the week. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
High pressure still holding sway | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
across many central and southern areas. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
Another weather system comes in off the Atlantic, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
we'll have to keep an eye on that. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
But for the time being on Thursday, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
plenty of fine weather. Could be a cool start, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
but in the sunshine it'll feel very nice indeed, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
and with light winds temperatures back up | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
into the low to mid 20s across the South. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Always that bit fresher across the North. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
By the time we reach the end of the week, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
this front coming in from the West | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
will make its presence felt, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
but as a slowing future. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
There's uncertainty about its progress eastwards, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
but it looks as if we'll see wet weather | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
for Northern Ireland and Western Scotland | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
again on a strengthening wind. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:14
Whereas further south and east | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
across the country we'll hold on | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
to at least one more | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
fine and potentially pretty warm day. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
Temperatures again doing very well | 0:02:21 | 0:02:22
for what will be early September, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
up into the mid, possibly high 20s. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Again, it will be fresher | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
towards the North and West. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
Big question marks about the progress of that front | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
eastwards through the weekend, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
but I think we'll see unsettled weather | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
gradually spreading across the country. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
So some rain at times, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
cooler conditions for the South and East. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
I mentioned the tropics, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
we're keeping a close eye on Hurricane Gaston. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
We also have a tropical depression further west in the Atlantic. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
And these sources of energy | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
will start to move their way northwards. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
Gaston will no longer be a hurricane, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
but an area of low pressure, an injection of energy, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
up towards us and our jet stream | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
will have a rippling downstream effect. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
Gaston is not going to reach our shores, we think. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
It looks as if through early next week, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
low pressure will dominate | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
across northern and western areas | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
and high pressure could hold sway | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
across the more southern | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
and central parts of the UK. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
But I must reiterate, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:17
there's a lot of uncertainty | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
generated by these tropical features. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
We'll keep an eye on Gaston. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
It looks like staying away, but it may have | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
a knock-on effect on our weather | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
for the early part of next week. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
Tom will update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
