Well, it's time for our extended weather update

0:00:030:00:05

and if you were watching yesterday,

0:00:050:00:07

we talked a lot about the tropical storms in the Atlantic

0:00:070:00:09

that may be influencing our weather in some sort of way

0:00:090:00:12

but in the short-term,

0:00:120:00:14

this is what it looks like for the rest of the week.

0:00:140:00:16

It should be quite sunny,

0:00:160:00:17

a fair amount of sunshine for most of us, pleasantly warm

0:00:170:00:20

but there will be some spells of rain heading our way as well.

0:00:200:00:23

This is what we had in the last sort of day or so -

0:00:230:00:25

high pressure close to the south-east of the country

0:00:250:00:27

so here, spectacular clear, blue skies,

0:00:270:00:30

really lovely weather there

0:00:300:00:31

but these weather fronts in the Atlantic

0:00:310:00:33

are making inroads so the first spell of rain brought

0:00:330:00:35

by this cold front here,

0:00:350:00:37

that's heading in the direction

0:00:370:00:39

of Northern Ireland and Scotland.

0:00:390:00:41

And, eventually,

0:00:410:00:42

this normal progression of weather patterns

0:00:420:00:45

will be disrupted in some way or another

0:00:450:00:47

by these tropical storms and this hurricane,

0:00:470:00:49

for example, Hurricane Gaston.

0:00:490:00:50

That's way out there,

0:00:500:00:52

still not bothering anybody for the time being,

0:00:520:00:55

probably won't do actually,

0:00:550:00:57

even in the mid-to-long-term.

0:00:570:00:59

But this is what it looks like on Wednesday -

0:00:590:01:01

we've got a weather front crossing the UK,

0:01:010:01:02

there will be some spells of rain, plenty of sunshine

0:01:020:01:05

across western areas,

0:01:050:01:07

quite fresh here, 17, 18 degrees.

0:01:070:01:09

You'll notice that not quite

0:01:090:01:11

so warm across the south-east,

0:01:110:01:12

in fact, on Tuesday, temperatures here

0:01:120:01:15

were getting up into the high 20s,

0:01:150:01:17

more like 22 or 23 degrees

0:01:170:01:18

with this weather front crossing through.

0:01:180:01:21

Now, this is a ridge,

0:01:210:01:22

it's almost like a bump, like a hill,

0:01:220:01:24

and this is high pressure here and when we get that,

0:01:240:01:26

and it's usually between two weather systems,

0:01:260:01:28

we get a window of much better weather so, actually,

0:01:280:01:31

not looking bad at all for most of us on Thursday

0:01:310:01:33

but a little bit of rain, again,

0:01:330:01:35

coming off the Atlantic

0:01:350:01:36

with those weather fronts lining up there

0:01:360:01:39

for Northern Ireland

0:01:390:01:40

and also western parts of Scotland.

0:01:400:01:42

Now, Thursday evening into Friday,

0:01:420:01:44

these weather fronts will be sliding

0:01:440:01:46

across the northern half of the UK

0:01:460:01:48

so Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Lake District,

0:01:480:01:50

eventually Wales, perhaps into the south-west,

0:01:500:01:52

we'll have some rain

0:01:520:01:53

and then later on in the afternoon,

0:01:530:01:55

even the central and southern areas of the UK

0:01:550:01:56

could catch a little bit of rain.

0:01:560:01:59

So, I think, most of us, by the end of Friday,

0:01:590:02:01

will at least have a dose of rain -

0:02:010:02:04

not necessarily heavy rain

0:02:040:02:05

but there will be one or two sprinkles

0:02:050:02:08

at the very least. So, the weekend,

0:02:080:02:09

let's have a look at the broad picture across the Atlantic.

0:02:090:02:12

So, these swirls here,

0:02:120:02:13

individual tropical storms,

0:02:130:02:16

one actually moving across Florida,

0:02:160:02:18

lots of heavy rains here,

0:02:180:02:19

this one moving out

0:02:190:02:20

just off the eastern seaboard of the US

0:02:200:02:23

and another one here, probably Gaston,

0:02:230:02:24

a tropical storm by this stage, and basically,

0:02:240:02:27

what these storms do when they move northwards,

0:02:270:02:29

they transport all of that heat, that energy,

0:02:290:02:31

the tropical air northwards

0:02:310:02:33

but this isn't really great news

0:02:330:02:35

for us weather forecasters

0:02:350:02:36

because that, as I said,

0:02:360:02:38

disrupts the normal progression of weather fronts.

0:02:380:02:40

But this is Saturday

0:02:400:02:41

so those tropical weather systems

0:02:410:02:44

are nowhere near us, this is just our ordinary

0:02:440:02:46

wet and windy weather heading our way for Saturday.

0:02:460:02:49

So, not a pretty picture

0:02:490:02:50

for many of us and actually, come Sunday,

0:02:500:02:52

it could be fairly unsettled as well but I think,

0:02:520:02:55

during the weekend,

0:02:550:02:56

there should be at least a window of opportunity

0:02:560:02:58

of some sunshine

0:02:580:03:00

so it's not going to be

0:03:000:03:01

a wash-out all the way through.

0:03:010:03:02

And then early next week,

0:03:020:03:03

this is the satellite picture right now, but early next week,

0:03:030:03:06

again, as we were saying,

0:03:060:03:07

these tropical weather systems

0:03:070:03:09

moving northwards

0:03:090:03:10

so perhaps they will be transporting

0:03:100:03:12

some of that tropical air,

0:03:120:03:13

that humid, warmer air

0:03:130:03:14

in our direction but to the south-east,

0:03:140:03:16

we'll start to see

0:03:160:03:17

a high pressure developing here so actually,

0:03:170:03:19

the weather may end up being dry across the south

0:03:190:03:22

but at the moment, too early to say what's waiting in the wings -

0:03:220:03:24

it could be anything flying our way.

0:03:240:03:27

That's it from me. Thanks for watching.
