Now that climatological autumn is well underway, we'll take a look

0:00:020:00:05

back at the three months of summer. Through June, July and August.

0:00:050:00:08

Well, actually, it will go down as quite a wet summer but

0:00:080:00:11

that's mainly because June itself was a very wet month.

0:00:110:00:14

Actually, through July and August,

0:00:140:00:16

through the Midlands and much of southern England,

0:00:160:00:18

particularly the south-east, it was much drier than average and

0:00:180:00:21

overall temperatures were a notch or two above the seasonal norm.

0:00:210:00:25

So, quite a warm three-month spell.

0:00:250:00:27

And we did see some heat,

0:00:270:00:28

the heat peaked on August 23 in Faversham

0:00:280:00:31

in Kent, with 34 Celsius.

0:00:310:00:34

And we're going to see the temperatures rising again

0:00:340:00:36

through this coming week, turning warmer pretty much across the board.

0:00:360:00:39

We start the new week with this weather front coming in from

0:00:390:00:42

the west.

0:00:420:00:44

As you can see, there's a fair number of isobars on it,

0:00:440:00:46

so that means it will be quite breezy and there will

0:00:460:00:49

be some rain with that as well.

0:00:490:00:50

Now, the rain will be trying to work its way eastwards all the while,

0:00:500:00:53

but it never really gets to the eastern side of Scotland,

0:00:530:00:55

the eastern side of England, so it stays dry here,

0:00:550:00:58

clouds over to some degree in the afternoon.

0:00:580:01:00

Further west, after a wet start to the day

0:01:000:01:02

the rain becomes very light and patchy in the afternoon.

0:01:020:01:04

We keep a lot of low cloud though,

0:01:040:01:06

around the coast and over some hills, generally quite

0:01:060:01:08

a warm and humid afternoon,

0:01:080:01:09

temperatures in the high teens or the low 20s.

0:01:090:01:12

Then on into Tuesday,

0:01:120:01:13

and there will be a slow start to the day particularly across England

0:01:130:01:16

and Wales, with fairly extensive low cloud,

0:01:160:01:18

some mist and some fog, a little bit of rain on this weather

0:01:180:01:20

front for Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland.

0:01:200:01:23

And as we get on into Tuesday afternoon,

0:01:230:01:25

I think we'll begin to break up some of that cloud and it's going to

0:01:250:01:28

be warm, quite widely, 25, 26 in the south-east but even into the low

0:01:280:01:31

20s in northern Scotland.

0:01:310:01:32

And then as we get on to the middle of the week,

0:01:320:01:34

this big high in the centre of Europe, winds go

0:01:340:01:37

clockwise around that, so we are developing this southerly breeze,

0:01:370:01:40

and that's what going to be with us through the middle of the week.

0:01:400:01:43

It's going to import something a little bit drier,

0:01:430:01:45

so that I think that drier air will help to evaporate that cloud

0:01:450:01:48

away, so through Wednesday morning we may well start again quite

0:01:480:01:51

grey but as that drier air drifts up from the south,

0:01:510:01:54

it will begin to break that cloud up into the afternoon,

0:01:540:01:56

so some good spells of sunshine developing. Dry virtually

0:01:560:01:59

everywhere, just the odd spot of rain in the far north and west,

0:01:590:02:02

where temperatures will be around about 15 or 16, but for many of us

0:02:020:02:05

on Wednesday it's a very warm one, into the low to middle

0:02:050:02:08

20s quite widely, could get 26 or so in the south-eastern corner.

0:02:080:02:11

By Thursday, we start to see this weak weather front just

0:02:110:02:14

drifting its way in from the south, and west,

0:02:140:02:16

it will bring some outbreaks of rain with it, but it's also going

0:02:160:02:19

to drop those temperatures by a few degrees in the south and west.

0:02:190:02:22

Ahead of that, with some good spells of sunshine, it's going to be

0:02:220:02:25

a very warm day, particularly so in the south-eastern corner here,

0:02:250:02:27

we could get 27 or 28 degrees but we're into the low 20s

0:02:270:02:30

quite widely. Notice those temperatures just dropping back

0:02:300:02:33

a little bit behind that weak weather front.

0:02:330:02:35

Which continues to work its way ever eastwards through Thursday night

0:02:350:02:38

and on into Friday, with a bit of a breeze coming in behind that.

0:02:380:02:41

So by Friday, temperatures might be down by couple of degrees in

0:02:410:02:44

comparison with Thursday, but still on the warm side.

0:02:440:02:47

In the high teens or the low 20s in the south-east,

0:02:470:02:49

and many central and eastern areas looking fine and dry but

0:02:490:02:52

we will see some wetter, windier weather drifting into the

0:02:520:02:54

western side of the UK through Friday afternoon.

0:02:540:02:57

Then, looking further ahead into the coming weekend, the big picture

0:02:570:03:01

sees high pressure still across central Europe.

0:03:010:03:03

Low pressure to the north-west of the UK - a slightly

0:03:030:03:06

fresher breeze blowing around that low, but still, for many,

0:03:060:03:09

we've got this south-westerly breeze,

0:03:090:03:11

still bringing in some fairly warm air.

0:03:110:03:14

So looking further ahead into the start of the coming week,

0:03:140:03:17

it looks we'll develop this north-west, south-east split,

0:03:170:03:19

still a bit of a breeze in the north and north-west, closer to that

0:03:190:03:22

low, some sunshine further south and still those temperatures for

0:03:220:03:25

most places will be a few degrees above normal.
