A very warm welcome to you and our Weather For The Week Ahead.

0:00:020:00:05

Let's see what Mother Nature's going to bring us in the coming days.

0:00:050:00:08

It's certainly going to be a lot calmer across

0:00:080:00:10

Scotland after that stormy, stormy day on Thursday, particularly

0:00:100:00:14

around north-western coasts of Scotland, gusts around 70mph

0:00:140:00:17

brought in by this area of low pressure,

0:00:170:00:19

the cloud you can see here brought in by this powerful jet stream.

0:00:190:00:24

But things are calming down. Another interesting feature of our weather

0:00:240:00:27

has been the aurora borealis,

0:00:270:00:29

and a good chance of catching a glimpse of this space spectacular

0:00:290:00:33

over the coming nights even as far south as southern

0:00:330:00:36

Britain, but you're going to have to be out of town, out of the

0:00:360:00:39

light pollution, to catch a glimpse of that glow on the horizon.

0:00:390:00:42

Here's the weather for Friday. Not looking bad at all.

0:00:420:00:45

Still a bit of a breeze out there,

0:00:450:00:46

quite fresh across many northern parts of the country.

0:00:460:00:49

You can see 12, 15 degrees, and still a scattering of showers.

0:00:490:00:52

But I think the sunshine will prevail

0:00:520:00:54

at least most of the time on Friday.

0:00:540:00:57

And then, Friday night into Saturday,

0:00:570:00:59

there is yet another change in our weather.

0:00:590:01:01

The jet stream is going to bring us another area of low pressure.

0:01:010:01:04

This time we're not talking about strong winds,

0:01:040:01:06

but we are talking about a very mixed weekend.

0:01:060:01:08

So, the weekend looks something like this,

0:01:080:01:11

a cool and showery Saturday but a much, much better Sunday.

0:01:110:01:16

So, let's have a look at Saturday's weather forecast, then.

0:01:160:01:18

Right from the word go, lots of showers coming in,

0:01:180:01:20

a fair old breeze blowing around, too, but it's the showers

0:01:200:01:24

that really will be the feature of the day, some of them heavy,

0:01:240:01:27

thundery, and wherever the cloud and the showers linger - and this

0:01:270:01:30

could be slow-moving - it will be a cool day, ten, 12, 11,

0:01:300:01:34

13 degrees, those sorts of values.

0:01:340:01:36

In the sunshine, the temperatures will recover to around 17 in London.

0:01:360:01:38

I think the best of the weather will be out north-west here.

0:01:380:01:42

But very quickly as we head into Sunday,

0:01:420:01:45

so Saturday night into Sunday, that low moves out towards the

0:01:450:01:48

Continent and Denmark and we're in-between

0:01:480:01:51

weather systems, so clearing skies.

0:01:510:01:53

But that also means that first thing on Sunday morning,

0:01:530:01:56

it is going to be quite chilly, so widely, I think,

0:01:560:01:59

temperatures will be down to six or seven degrees,

0:01:590:02:02

perhaps cooler than that in some countryside spots.

0:02:020:02:05

So, here's a look at Sunday. Again, in-between weather systems.

0:02:050:02:08

There's that low pressure. Another weather front out in the Atlantic.

0:02:080:02:11

We're in this drier slot. This is a ridge of high pressure.

0:02:110:02:15

Temperatures recovering nicely after a cool morning, 18 in London.

0:02:150:02:19

Still fresh across Scotland.

0:02:190:02:21

That's about the average for the time of year, isn't it?

0:02:210:02:23

We're getting into October now, the end of September, October.

0:02:230:02:27

Here's Monday. Looks like weather fronts are trying to approach,

0:02:270:02:31

but they get stalled, and the reason for that is the shape of the

0:02:310:02:34

jet stream, which I'm going to talk about in just a second.

0:02:340:02:36

But I think it's pretty obvious, lots of fine weather across

0:02:360:02:39

England and Wales here, some outbreaks of rain getting into

0:02:390:02:42

Western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:02:420:02:44

And then, come Monday night and Tuesday, that weather front does

0:02:440:02:46

try to move a little bit further towards the east, but it can't.

0:02:460:02:49

It's sort of blocked. The weather pattern's stalled.

0:02:490:02:53

We keep the fine, dry weather across many eastern areas.

0:02:530:02:56

And temperatures not bad in this southerly flow, 20 in London,

0:02:560:02:59

16 or 17 you can see across northern areas of the UK.

0:02:590:03:02

Let's look at the shape of the jet stream,

0:03:020:03:04

because that's quite often what determines our weather.

0:03:040:03:07

When you get this kink and then you get this detour to the north,

0:03:070:03:09

that's where a lot of the weather tends to go.

0:03:090:03:11

All weather fronts kind of stall across this part of the country,

0:03:110:03:14

whereas to the east you have high pressure and fine weather.

0:03:140:03:17

So mainly dry and fine, I think, across eastern areas,

0:03:170:03:21

whereas in the north-west, closer to those weather fronts,

0:03:210:03:24

we will have at times some spells of rain and breezy weather.

0:03:240:03:27

You're up to date. Thanks for watching.
