With weather patterns in the west of Europe | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
fairly blocked at the moment, in that they're not changing | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
in a hurry, we've been turning our attention | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
over the past week to the western Atlantic, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
to see how that may influence things. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
Our latest thing to watch out for is this - | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
Hurricane Nicole. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
Strengthened during the latter stages of Tuesday | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
to hurricane status. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
Could hit Bermuda on Thursday with | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
winds in excess of 100mph, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
dangerous surf and torrential rain. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
From then on, it looks like it'll push its way | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
northwards into the north-west Atlantic, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
where it might actually meander | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
as we go into the weekend, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
and in hanging around here, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
it won't have any direct influence | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
to our weather, but into the latter stages | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
of next week, it may strengthen | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
the weather patterns enough - | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
the Jet Stream, that is - to push these areas | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
of high and low pressure out of the way. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
This is what we've got at the moment. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
High pressure stuck across Scandinavia | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
and, starting to come onto the scene, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
this area of low pressure across Iberia. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Far away enough at the moment, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
so for Wednesday, high pressure dominant, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
easterly winds, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
bringng occasional showers, lots of cloud | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
into eastern parts of the country. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
One or two showers further west, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
but some good breaks in the cloud, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
some sunshine at times. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
You'll notice, southern counties of England, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
a lot cloudier - round the coast, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
could be heavy showers. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Windiest conditions in the south. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
Winds generally picking up UK-wide | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
by this stage, as an area of high pressure | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
sits across Scandinavia, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
and the low pressure starts to get closer to it. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Closer they are, the stronger the winds tend to be. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
And so a breezier day for all on Thursday, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
and quite a cool breeze at that. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
Like we'll have seen on Wednesday, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
cloud mainly to the east | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
with occasional rain but that will | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
push its way westwards, slightly greater chance | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
of a few showers on Thursday. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
Probably driest weather | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
across southern England and Wales, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
the best of the sunshine. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
But wherever you are, for some, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
temperatures struggling to get into double figures - | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
add on the effect of the wind, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
probably the coolest-feeling day of the week. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
That will continue across northern areas on Friday. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
On the northern flank of this area of low pressure, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
the winds will be stronger - | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
You'll notice the low pressure | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
is coming more into play by Friday. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
So, some longer spells of rain pushing | 0:01:54 | 0:01:55
into Wales, the south-west, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
potentially across Ireland, too. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Something drier at times for the east, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
but lots of cloud around, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
and a real bite to that wind | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
as it pushes in, touching gale force | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
at times in the north. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
Now, by Saturday and the weekend, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
look how the low pressure | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
is the main, dominant feature of our weather | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
to the south-west of the UK. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
Winds revolving around - still strongest | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
across Scotland and Northern Ireland, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
northern England, fairly cloudy, here. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
Longer spells of rain | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
pushing in towards the east. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
Brighter weather through England and Wales, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
though, further south, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
in-between slow-moving, heavy and thundery showers. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
Winds a bit lighter for the time being, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
and it does feel a little bit warmer. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
That low-pressure system pushes the west of Ireland | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
into Sunday, does mean the winds pick up | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
across England and Wales, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
but it's a southerly wind, get a bit of sunshine, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
feeling reasonably nice, there. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
But showers possible just about anywhere in the UK, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
some heavy and thundery, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
and plenty of low clouds across eastern districts | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
of Scotland and north-east England. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
So, we finish the weekend, going into next week | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
with, still, a blocked pattern. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
The Jet Stream is strengthening across to North America, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
but it splits, and so it doesn't really shift | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
the high pressure we have to the north, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
and what we then have | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
is low pressure to the west of the UK. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
So, into next week, with things slow-moving, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
low pressure there, expect further cloud, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
outbreaks of rain at times just about anywhere, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
quite breezy with that, too, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
although there will be drier and brighter moments. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
How it feels in those drier, brighter moments | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
depends on when the low pressure sits. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
If it's to the west, we drag in our air from the south, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
in a slightly warmer direction. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
If that low-pressure system moves to the north, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
we drag in our air off the Atlantic. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
It will feel a little cooler. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
That's the main uncertainty for next week, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
then, by the end of the week, | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
whether the Jet Stream strengthens enough | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
to clear that low-pressure system away. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
