We've been forecasting some rough weather

0:00:020:00:03

and it's already arrived.

0:00:030:00:05

Not too stormy just yet - we've got rain and wind -

0:00:050:00:08

but come Friday, that's when the weather

0:00:080:00:11

could turn very nasty, particularly across

0:00:110:00:13

northern parts of the British Isles,

0:00:130:00:15

and there could be some disruption.

0:00:150:00:16

Really worth paying attention to the weather forecast

0:00:160:00:19

over the next 48 hours, because it may affect

0:00:190:00:22

your travel plans around Christmas.

0:00:220:00:24

This is what the satellite picture looks like -

0:00:240:00:26

those clouds are racing across the Atlantic.

0:00:260:00:29

They're being pushed by a powerful jet stream.

0:00:290:00:31

Here's the leading edge of that bad weather.

0:00:310:00:33

It's been moving across

0:00:330:00:34

north-western parts of the British Isles

0:00:340:00:36

during the course of Tuesday.

0:00:360:00:37

Shocking day in Northern Ireland,

0:00:370:00:39

heavy rain, feeling cold.

0:00:390:00:40

Then, through early Wednesday,

0:00:400:00:42

some of that rain,

0:00:420:00:43

the leftover of this weather front,

0:00:430:00:45

moving a little bit further south.

0:00:450:00:47

Now, behind this line of rain,

0:00:470:00:49

we've got colder air

0:00:490:00:50

coming in off the Atlantic

0:00:500:00:52

and that means that any showers

0:00:520:00:54

pushed in by that strong wind,

0:00:540:00:56

when they come through, some of these showers could be wintry,

0:00:560:00:58

particularly across the hills.

0:00:580:01:00

We could have some hail and thunder crossing

0:01:000:01:02

parts of northern England into Wales,

0:01:020:01:04

but notice also,

0:01:040:01:06

across the south and the south-east,

0:01:060:01:07

it turns cloudier and wetter.

0:01:070:01:09

As the day goes on, we'll get a couple

0:01:090:01:11

of double-figure temperatures

0:01:110:01:13

for a time in the south,

0:01:130:01:14

but in the north, a lot colder -

0:01:140:01:16

we can see 5 degrees there in Glasgow -

0:01:160:01:18

and that wind will just

0:01:180:01:20

keep on building and building

0:01:200:01:21

as we go over the next few days.

0:01:210:01:23

So, Wednesday night, a blustery day

0:01:230:01:25

with showers across the north,

0:01:250:01:27

clearer in the south.

0:01:270:01:28

Actually, Thursday starts off on a sunny note

0:01:280:01:31

for many of us,

0:01:310:01:32

at least across much of England.

0:01:320:01:33

Wales will get a few showers, but here,

0:01:330:01:36

I think the best day of the week,

0:01:360:01:37

southern England south-eastern England,

0:01:370:01:39

East Anglia, some of these Eastern counties.

0:01:390:01:42

Scotland and Northern Ireland get the showers

0:01:420:01:44

and it will remain very windy

0:01:440:01:46

and very chilly in that wind as well.

0:01:460:01:48

And then Friday -

0:01:480:01:50

that's when it really starts to kick in.

0:01:500:01:52

This big area of low pressure comes in.

0:01:520:01:54

This has been named Storm Barbara

0:01:540:01:56

by the Met Office, and we have an amber warning

0:01:560:01:59

issued by the Met Office

0:01:590:02:00

for north-western parts of Scotland,

0:02:000:02:02

and other warnings are issued further south too.

0:02:020:02:06

Now, the top gusts -

0:02:060:02:07

Friday could approach 90mph

0:02:070:02:08

in north-western Scotland,

0:02:080:02:10

70mph through Northern Ireland,

0:02:100:02:13

southern Scotland and northern England.

0:02:130:02:15

Not so bad in the south,

0:02:150:02:16

but there could be another storm on the way.

0:02:160:02:18

Whether this one will be named or not,

0:02:180:02:20

too early to say - we have to determine

0:02:200:02:22

just how powerful or how many impacts

0:02:220:02:24

it may potentially bring.

0:02:240:02:26

But Christmas Eve, again,

0:02:260:02:27

very blustery, then Christmas Day...

0:02:270:02:29

So, this isn't Barbara,

0:02:290:02:31

this is the next one, the second storm -

0:02:310:02:33

I mean, look at all these arrows.

0:02:330:02:34

Really strong winds blowing through,

0:02:340:02:36

gales in the north,

0:02:360:02:38

very blustery in the south as well,

0:02:380:02:40

And once the second storm moves through,

0:02:400:02:43

Christmas Day, later on Christmas Day,

0:02:430:02:46

we could see colder air coming in temporarily.

0:02:460:02:48

There could be some wintry weather

0:02:480:02:51

across northern hills,

0:02:510:02:52

and then, after all of that,

0:02:520:02:55

it calms down.

0:02:550:02:57

High pressure builds across

0:02:570:02:59

many parts of southern Britain,

0:02:590:03:01

maybe as far north

0:03:010:03:02

as northern parts of Britain,

0:03:020:03:04

but there is just a small print

0:03:040:03:05

to the weather forecast,

0:03:050:03:07

because there will be some nasty lows,

0:03:070:03:09

lurking and developing out in the Atlantic,

0:03:090:03:11

and they may affect

0:03:110:03:13

north-western parts of the UK.

0:03:130:03:15

But say high pressure does build -

0:03:150:03:16

and we're fairly confident of that -

0:03:160:03:18

that will probably push

0:03:180:03:19

some milder air in our direction,

0:03:190:03:21

but cold air will never be too far away.

0:03:210:03:23

That's a long way off, a long way off.

0:03:230:03:26

We have a rough ride before that happens.
