Hello there. It's been a quiet

0:00:020:00:03

start to the year weather-wise,

0:00:030:00:04

but so far this 2017

0:00:040:00:06

we've seen two faces of January.

0:00:060:00:08

One has been cloudy and rather mild

0:00:080:00:11

with outbreaks of light, patchy rain,

0:00:110:00:13

as you can see across the skyline of London.

0:00:130:00:16

The other, though, has been sparkling -

0:00:160:00:18

a real contrast.

0:00:180:00:19

Blue skies and sunshine by day

0:00:190:00:21

has led to cold nights,

0:00:210:00:23

hard frosts and some icy stretches first thing,

0:00:230:00:26

and it looks likely that that's what we'll see during Thursday.

0:00:260:00:30

After a hard, cold, frosty start,

0:00:300:00:33

the frost will slowly lift away

0:00:330:00:35

but the temperatures will struggle by day.

0:00:350:00:37

Still, the risk of a few isolated showers

0:00:370:00:39

through Lincolnshire and East Anglia,

0:00:390:00:41

slowly fading, and a southerly breeze

0:00:410:00:42

dragging in more cloud perhaps through

0:00:420:00:44

the south-west and into Northern Ireland.

0:00:440:00:46

Here, temperatures will peak

0:00:460:00:48

at around seven or eight Celsius,

0:00:480:00:49

but some lovely sunshine,

0:00:490:00:51

however it will feel cold with temperatures

0:00:510:00:53

just a few degrees above freezing.

0:00:530:00:55

All change as we move out of Thursday into Friday.

0:00:550:00:58

The winds swing round more

0:00:580:01:00

to a south-westerly direction,

0:01:000:01:01

and that's going to push in these weather fronts,

0:01:010:01:03

bringing yet more cloud and outbreaks of rain.

0:01:030:01:06

Now, there could be some heavier bursts

0:01:060:01:07

along west-facing coasts for a time.

0:01:070:01:09

Ahead of it, though,

0:01:090:01:11

we could see some dense fog patches

0:01:110:01:12

in the south-east corner, which we'll

0:01:120:01:14

need to keep a close eye on,

0:01:140:01:15

but as the cloud and the rain drifts its

0:01:150:01:17

way south and east, it drags in milder air,

0:01:170:01:20

and highs of 5-11 Celsius.

0:01:200:01:22

That front clears away

0:01:220:01:23

for the start of the weekend

0:01:230:01:25

and allows high pressure to build back in

0:01:250:01:27

across the south-west.

0:01:270:01:28

The potential for the second half

0:01:280:01:30

of the weekend for weather fronts

0:01:300:01:32

to topple across the extreme top,

0:01:320:01:33

but for the weekend, it's not looking too bad at all.

0:01:330:01:36

It will be noticeably milder.

0:01:360:01:38

There'll be a lot of cloud around and outbreaks of rain, again,

0:01:380:01:41

should be light and patchy,

0:01:410:01:43

just like that first photograph we showed you

0:01:430:01:45

earlier on in this show.

0:01:450:01:47

So, as we start off Saturday, then,

0:01:470:01:49

it will be a quiet start.

0:01:490:01:50

There will be a lot of cloud around.

0:01:500:01:52

Hopefully some breaks and some brightness,

0:01:520:01:54

but, more importantly, look at the temperatures,

0:01:540:01:56

6-11 Celsius, so a mild feel to the day.

0:01:560:01:59

There's a risk of, perhaps,

0:01:590:02:00

a slightly fresher breeze just toppling over

0:02:000:02:03

that higher pressure,

0:02:030:02:04

the isobars squeezing together

0:02:040:02:06

and a weather front bringing the risk,

0:02:060:02:07

perhaps, of some light, patchy rain

0:02:070:02:09

up into the extreme north and west.

0:02:090:02:12

So a breezier, showery day here,

0:02:120:02:14

but elsewhere a good deal of dry weather

0:02:140:02:16

in the story, perhaps rather cloudy,

0:02:160:02:18

but again staying pretty mild -

0:02:180:02:20

a similar feel to things, 8-11 Celsius.

0:02:200:02:23

As we move out of Sunday into Monday,

0:02:230:02:25

this area of high pressure

0:02:250:02:27

is going to be important,

0:02:270:02:28

because just where it sits will determine

0:02:280:02:30

what's going to happen with these weather fronts.

0:02:300:02:32

If it drifts off to the south-west,

0:02:320:02:34

it's going to allow

0:02:340:02:35

some wetter and windier weather

0:02:350:02:37

to arrive on Monday,

0:02:370:02:38

with the potential for some stronger winds

0:02:380:02:40

and some heavier rain,

0:02:400:02:41

and that leads us nicely into the

0:02:410:02:43

six-to-ten-day period.

0:02:430:02:44

The position of this high, then,

0:02:440:02:46

is all-important.

0:02:460:02:47

The jet stream looks likely to

0:02:470:02:48

speed up and become a little more organised

0:02:480:02:51

and drift up to the northern

0:02:510:02:52

half of the UK.

0:02:520:02:53

That's going to feed in

0:02:530:02:54

these low pressures,

0:02:540:02:55

moving in off the Atlantic.

0:02:550:02:57

There is the potential,

0:02:570:02:58

just like we were saying yesterday,

0:02:580:03:00

for the jet stream to sink

0:03:000:03:01

just that little bit further south,

0:03:010:03:02

which means that the unsettled weather

0:03:020:03:04

will also come a little further

0:03:040:03:06

south as well,

0:03:060:03:07

so this area of high pressure

0:03:070:03:09

will be pretty important

0:03:090:03:11

and there's still a level of

0:03:110:03:12

uncertainty as to just where

0:03:120:03:14

it's likely to sit.

0:03:140:03:15

But the chances are that

0:03:150:03:16

the wetter and windier weather

0:03:160:03:17

will always be to the further

0:03:170:03:19

north and west,

0:03:190:03:20

It'll be somewhat milder, cloudy

0:03:200:03:22

but largely dry to the south.

0:03:220:03:24

So, as we started off by saying,

0:03:240:03:26

the two faces of January are set to continue.
