06/01/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. So far with this week's weather,

we've been on a little bit of a rollercoaster ride of temperatures.

No two days the same.

One morning we're greeted with cold,

frosty weather conditions just like Thursday.

A beautiful start, but bitterly cold with temperatures down to -8.

This Friday, it was a different story, all change,

milder air flooding in from the west.

It brought cloudier conditions for most of us

and some outbreaks of rain.

That rain will continue to push in from the west accompanied by

a strengthening south-westerly breeze driving in milder air.

Ahead of it, after a chilly start, it looks as though we'll

cling on to some sunshine across the south-east during daylight hours.

Here, still on the chilly side, with 4 or 5 degrees.

Up into the north-west behind that weather front,

milder air starts to push through.

It's going to be the milder air that wins the story through the weather

over the weekend, pushing the cold air back into the near continent.

So, for many of us, we'll see those temperatures slightly above

average for the time of year,

once the rain has cleared away.

It pushes through during the early hours of Saturday morning,

behind it misty, perhaps some hill fog around first thing.

A lot of low, grey cloud,

but not a bad day for many and temperatures will respond.

A bit more of a breeze up into the north,

but highs of 6 to 12 degrees is quite likely.

As we move out of Saturday into Sunday,

we see this weak weather front pushing into the north-west.

The winds strengthening here, but on the whole,

high pressure still very much in the driving seat.

That means very little in the way of change.

It looks as though we keep the cloudy conditions.

Early morning mist and fog could be an issue for a time,

but not for long. That will lift away.

It stays rather dull, largely dry,

the cloud thick enough for a spot of drizzle from time to time.

All change though as we move into Monday,

so make the most of the weekend's weather.

Milder for many, a lot of cloud around and the cloud thick

enough from time to time for some patchy drizzle.

So the first change comes into Monday as we see some wetter

and windier weather pushing in from the north-west.

The isobars squeezing together. Gales are quite likely.

Some of that rain could be quite heavy as it pushes into the

north-west of the country slowly sinking its way steadily south.

So it's going to be a wet and windy, but a mild affair during Monday.

Again, staying largely dry during daylight hours with double

figures widely across the country.

Something a little bit cooler

and fresher starts to show its hand as we move out of Monday.

The isobars are still tightly packed together,

the wind swinging round to a more north-westerly direction

before the next area of low pressure moves in.

This is going to be the general trend as we move through next week.

So, we've been looking at a six to ten-day forecast of the jet stream.

We now have associated that it is strengthening and sitting up

to the far north and that's allowing these low pressure systems to

move in from the Atlantic.

Things turning a little more mobile, a little more unsettled.

If we look at a low in a little more detail, though,

as the low approaches, it drives in and it pulls in this milder air.

But then, as the low clears away on the back edge of that low,

we see a north-westerly flow.

The colder air set to return.

This is why we're getting this rollercoaster feel of temperatures.

One day will be cloudy and often wet at times and that's likely

into the six to ten-day period.

But as the low pulls away, we'll see that colder air digging in.

So it will be on the chilly side, but hopefully from time to time

we'll get a little more in the way of sunshine.
