07/01/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello there. We've seen some fairly cold and bright weather

over the past couple of days,

but things have been turning milder and cloudier

through the course of Friday and as we head through the weekend,

that theme to the weather is set to continue.

The cold air that's been with us

moving away towards the east

and what we're seeing is this milder air

moving in from the Atlantic

so that's going to be staying put through the weekend.

Things are looking generally mild and frost-free.

Still pretty cloudy, I think, over the next couple of days

and there'll be a little bit of patchy drizzle around,

but, equally, some wintry sunshine,

especially towards the north.

So, this is how Saturday's looking.

High pressure is with us

so lots of dry weather.

A little bit of patchy light rain

and drizzle across parts of southern England,

into Wales as well.

Further north across the country,

that's your best bet of catching some sunshine.

For northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland,

some bright spells here,

but temperatures in single figures.

Milder, ten or 11 towards the south,

but pretty murky

with quite a lot of low cloud and hill fog.

Heading through into the second half of the weekend,

then, overnight Saturday into Sunday,

we've still got a lot of cloud around

so some mist, some hill fog,

most of us frost-free under that cloud.

There could be a bit of frost

across rural parts of Scotland,

perhaps into the northeast of England, too.

To start the day on Sunday, then, quite a murky start.

Some mist, some fog

and some low cloud around, too.

Most of us looking dry with light winds.

Temperatures ten or 11 towards the west,

but slightly fresher in the east.

So, as we head into the new working week,

what we're going to see is high pressure

sitting out to the south

or the southwest of the UK.

We've got this weather front Sunday night

trying to move into the northwest

and the isobars becoming quite close here

so, really, as we set up the week ahead,

what we are going to see

is high pressure out to the southwest.

The jet stream orientated from west to east

across the Atlantic,

bringing us areas of low pressure at times

so the first of those low pressure systems

arrives on Monday.

It's going to be bringing some wet and windy weather

initially to the northwest of the UK,

pushing its way south-eastwards through the day.

To the southeast of that, pretty mild.

Double figures, slightly cooler conditions

working in on that north-westerly breeze

behind the weather front

so once that front moves its way through,

it does bring that spell of wet and windy weather

and then we're back into quite a breezy spell

of weather heading on into Tuesday.

The winds coming in from a north-westerly direction

so after a mild couple of days,

Tuesday once again turning that little bit colder,

but we should see a return

to some sunshine and temperatures

generally around about seven to nine degrees

for most of us.

So, heading into the middle of the week, then,

no great change in the set-up to the weather.

We've still got high pressure out towards the southwest

and again we've got frontal systems trying to move in

from the Atlantic and head their way eastwards

across the country.

So, through the course of Wednesday and Thursday,

through the middle part of the week,

we're going to see these areas of low pressure

bringing quite mild air at times

with quite a lot of cloud,

outbreaks of rain on these frontal systems

and then to the rear of the frontal systems

as they move their way eastwards.

A return to a north-westerly flow

so colder interludes in the weather

through the middle of the week.

As we look towards the end of the week,

it looks like those colder north-westerly winds

will tend to win out

so we'll return to slightly drier conditions,

but also colder.

A chance of some wintry showers around,

more particularly over the higher ground

in the north and northwest.

Down towards the south, things will look quieter

with lighter winds so scenes like this likely,

particularly in the south.

Some frost, possibly some fog around, too, at times,

but further north, it will be quite cold

so a dip in the temperatures once again

as we look towards next weekend.

There'll be some sunshine on offer,

also the chance of some wintry showers,

particularly over the higher ground in the north

and a return to frost further south.
