Two years ago, BBC Young Dancer launched

0:00:040:00:06

as a showcase for the UK's best young dance talent.

0:00:060:00:09

Six were selected to perform in the grand final.

0:00:120:00:15

Judged by some of the leading figures from the dance world.

0:00:180:00:22

Performing in front of such an enormous audience

0:00:220:00:24

and to be seen by so many important people in the dance world,

0:00:240:00:28

what an incredible thing for them.

0:00:280:00:30

It showed how great these young dancers are

0:00:300:00:33

and it gave us hope for the future.

0:00:330:00:35

The winner is Connor.

0:00:350:00:37

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:00:370:00:39

At the end of an unforgettable evening,

0:00:390:00:41

competition ambassador Carlos Acosta

0:00:410:00:44

announced 17-year-old contemporary dancer Connor Scott

0:00:440:00:47

as the first ever winner.

0:00:470:00:50

When they announced my name, literally,

0:00:500:00:53

it was just shock because I couldn't quite believe it.

0:00:530:00:57

The whole thing was such a beautiful experience

0:00:570:01:00

and to share it with some absolutely beautiful people, as well,

0:01:000:01:04

it was...it was amazing.

0:01:040:01:06

In just four weeks' time, BBC Young Dancer

0:01:130:01:16

returns to Sadler's Wells

0:01:160:01:19

and this world-famous stage for the 2017 grand final.

0:01:190:01:22

The winners of each of the four categories -

0:01:220:01:25

Street, Contemporary,

0:01:250:01:26

Ballet and South Asian dance, plus one wild card -

0:01:260:01:29

will perform here, in front of some of the biggest names in dance,

0:01:290:01:33

which is a prize in itself.

0:01:330:01:35

But at the end of the evening,

0:01:350:01:36

one of our dancers will walk away with the title -

0:01:360:01:40

BBC Young Dancer 2017.

0:01:400:01:42

Dance has rarely been more popular or as diverse.

0:02:130:02:17

People of all ages are taking up dance classes,

0:02:170:02:20

watching live performances in theatres and cinemas

0:02:200:02:24

and there's also a certain Saturday night entertainment show.

0:02:240:02:29

Dance is fun. People take great pleasure in doing it.

0:02:310:02:34

It's part of who we are as human beings.

0:02:340:02:36

Currently, these is so much diversity,

0:02:360:02:39

that's the diverse society that we live in,

0:02:390:02:41

and it's projected in the dance world.

0:02:410:02:43

Dance is extremely important

0:02:440:02:46

and I think, the more people dance, the more happy we'll be.

0:02:460:02:49

Last summer, BBC Young Dancer invited applications

0:02:490:02:53

from the best ballet, contemporary,

0:02:530:02:56

South Asian and street dancers aged 16-21.

0:02:560:03:00

Over the course of the series, we'll be following 20 dancers

0:03:010:03:04

and their journeys through the competition,

0:03:040:03:06

getting an insight into what it takes to be a dancer,

0:03:060:03:09

and showcasing the very best of their performances

0:03:090:03:12

from the category finals.

0:03:120:03:14

Tonight, we begin with the poppers and the lockers

0:03:170:03:20

as street dance takes centre stage.

0:03:200:03:22

From the DVD auditions, ten from this category

0:03:250:03:28

were selected to compete in the second round.

0:03:280:03:30

Held at the Midlands' Art Centre in Birmingham back in October,

0:03:320:03:35

it was judged by dancer and choreographer Marso Riviere,

0:03:350:03:39

popper and robot performer Nicholas Marvel,

0:03:390:03:42

and dancer and CEO of Boadicea Crew Rhimes Lecointe.

0:03:420:03:46

It's about being funky, it's about being unique, being creative,

0:03:470:03:50

being entertaining and enjoying yourself.

0:03:500:03:53

And I found tonight that they were really enjoying themselves,

0:03:530:03:56

so it was enjoyable to watch.

0:03:560:03:58

I just felt I was really blown away by the level of the dancers,

0:03:580:04:01

technically speaking and on a performance level, as well.

0:04:010:04:04

When it came to picking five dancers, it was quite hard,

0:04:040:04:08

but we managed to get five

0:04:080:04:10

and they were all very creative and original in their styles.

0:04:100:04:13

You guys are in for a real treat.

0:04:130:04:15

There's a lot of talent going on there. Wait until you see them.

0:04:150:04:18

And the five dancers selected for the street dance final are -

0:04:190:04:24

19-year-old Harry Barnes from Merseyside.

0:04:240:04:28

Two years ago, Harry won this category

0:04:280:04:30

and a place in the grand final.

0:04:300:04:32

He's back this year to defend his title.

0:04:320:04:35

It's real when you've got an actual audience.

0:04:350:04:38

You've just got to get them all on your wavelength.

0:04:380:04:41

And I really enjoy that task of trying to win people over...

0:04:410:04:46

without even saying a word.

0:04:460:04:48

18-year-old Tom Hughes Lloyd from Wrexham.

0:04:490:04:53

He's a former Junior World Street Dance Champion.

0:04:530:04:56

I'd had a few doubts over whether I'd be good enough, really.

0:04:560:05:00

And then I just thought, "I've got to do something,

0:05:000:05:02

"I've got to push myself."

0:05:020:05:04

And this came up and I just thought it would be perfect.

0:05:040:05:06

I'm going into this just to learn something new about myself,

0:05:060:05:10

but hopefully so that people can enjoy what I'm doing.

0:05:100:05:13

21-year-old Jodelle Douglas lives in Cardiff and, like Harry,

0:05:140:05:17

made it to this stage in the competition two years ago.

0:05:170:05:21

This show, I feel like it's one of the best platforms I've ever been

0:05:220:05:25

put on in terms of an experience, opportunity.

0:05:250:05:28

As long as I get what I want across to the audience, whoever,

0:05:280:05:31

happy days!

0:05:310:05:33

At just 17 years old, Kate Morris from Maesteg in South Wales

0:05:350:05:39

is the youngest dancer to make it through.

0:05:390:05:41

I watched Jodelle and Harry when I was 15 and I was, like,

0:05:430:05:46

"Oh, I want to do this".

0:05:460:05:48

So then I had to wait until I was old enough to do BBC Young Dancer,

0:05:480:05:52

so I'm glad I'm here. I'm really glad.

0:05:520:05:54

And completing the line-up,

0:05:560:05:58

21-year-old Darren Hamilton from Glasgow.

0:05:580:06:01

The best thing about dance is literally being able to

0:06:020:06:05

create and not worry about what you're creating.

0:06:050:06:08

That's the best thing, just that and connecting with people.

0:06:080:06:12

# Clap your hands, everybody

0:06:140:06:16

# If you got what it takes... #

0:06:160:06:18

Originating on the streets of New York, street dance first

0:06:200:06:24

arrived in the UK in the 1980s.

0:06:240:06:27

# Get on down. #

0:06:270:06:29

In the UK at the moment,

0:06:290:06:30

there's an absolutely massive street dance scene. So much going on.

0:06:300:06:35

If you're part of that community,

0:06:350:06:36

it feels like that's all there is in the world.

0:06:360:06:38

And it's getting bigger and bigger and bigger by the minute.

0:06:380:06:41

We're getting world champions now.

0:06:410:06:43

We're actually making a global impact.

0:06:430:06:46

People are afraid of battling our dancers now - that's a reality now.

0:06:460:06:49

The umbrella term street dance comes from the fact that it started

0:06:520:06:56

as a dance in the street.

0:06:560:06:58

But actually, street dance is in the theatre.

0:06:580:07:01

It's not street dance anymore.

0:07:010:07:03

It's a beautiful, legitimised dance form that is growing

0:07:030:07:07

and is successful and commercial.

0:07:070:07:10

Street dance is such a broad genre with

0:07:110:07:13

a myriad of different styles from locking to breaking.

0:07:130:07:17

This year, the dancers who've made it through to the category final

0:07:170:07:21

are all poppers.

0:07:210:07:22

Fundamentally, popping is the contraction and release of a muscle.

0:07:240:07:29

It appears like an electrical pulse,

0:07:290:07:31

so you contract and release and that is a pop.

0:07:310:07:35

Within it though there are many other styles.

0:07:350:07:37

Like animation, you can become a creature or a character.

0:07:370:07:42

Waving, you can use undulations to create the illusion of water.

0:07:420:07:47

Robot, you can become a mechanical automaton.

0:07:470:07:50

So there's all these things.

0:07:500:07:52

Then you can mix them up and just make good stories with them.

0:07:520:07:55

I look at some of these younger dancers.

0:08:000:08:03

What they are doing is WAY beyond my understanding and my thinking.

0:08:030:08:07

And they are pushing the boundaries and doing

0:08:070:08:10

new and exciting things and I LOVE it.

0:08:100:08:13

And good on them.

0:08:130:08:14

And I can't wait to see what happens in the next 50 years.

0:08:140:08:17

It's January and our five street dance finalists are in

0:08:220:08:25

Newport, South Wales to meet the mentors who will guide them

0:08:250:08:29

through the competition.

0:08:290:08:30

-Well done for getting this far, guys.

-Thank you.

-Awesome.

0:08:310:08:35

They are choreographers and street dance pioneers

0:08:350:08:38

Rhimes Lecointe and DJ Renegade.

0:08:380:08:41

I would really hope that all competitors get just

0:08:440:08:47

a sense of who they are as artists out of this.

0:08:470:08:50

By the end of it, they should be proud,

0:08:510:08:53

they should feel like they've accomplished something.

0:08:530:08:57

Some dancers just want to be in the background doing the same thing

0:08:570:09:01

as everyone else and some actually have a story to tell,

0:09:010:09:04

and I want to talk to the people who want to tell their own story.

0:09:040:09:07

Let someone else do the people-in-the-background stuff.

0:09:070:09:10

All five dancers are required to present two solos

0:09:110:09:15

and a duet in the category finals.

0:09:150:09:18

Newport provides the opportunity to work through their ideas

0:09:180:09:21

with their mentors.

0:09:210:09:22

First to work with DJ Renegade is Harry Barnes.

0:09:230:09:27

Yeah, way into the distance.

0:09:280:09:30

'Harry's way past capable.'

0:09:300:09:32

He knows exactly what he wants to do but I want him to push beyond that.

0:09:320:09:38

I want to see - what does Harry Barnes bring

0:09:380:09:41

to the dance form?

0:09:410:09:42

I want you to feel it in your skin, bro.

0:09:420:09:45

I've been finishing off and just making little changes and stuff

0:09:450:09:49

to my pieces in this last week.

0:09:490:09:50

It's been a little bit stressful and so he reassured

0:09:500:09:53

me that it was at the level it should be and, yeah, happy now.

0:09:530:09:57

In her session with Tom, Rhimes focuses on his stage presentation.

0:09:580:10:02

I LOVE to watch Tom dance. Ah!

0:10:070:10:10

I just think it's beautiful what he does...

0:10:100:10:14

but it could be the projection of his face and his eye line.

0:10:140:10:17

So, we looked to raise the head up, pierce out, look at your audience.

0:10:170:10:22

What are you saying? What do you want them to feel?

0:10:220:10:25

What he is saying is no place to go and I feel like

0:10:250:10:28

you could use that, like, in the beginning, you were...

0:10:280:10:31

like that.

0:10:310:10:32

-Yeah.

-So use that.

-Yeah.

-Because it really, really worked.

0:10:320:10:36

I'm so happy with the feedback that I got and it's really helped me.

0:10:360:10:39

I know exactly what I need to do for the next round.

0:10:390:10:42

Yeah! Awesome.

0:10:420:10:44

In the past two years,

0:10:470:10:48

Jodelle has been developing his own style of popping.

0:10:480:10:51

He now breaks it down with DJ Renegade.

0:10:510:10:54

-Nothing too awkward yet.

-OK.

0:10:540:10:56

'He's very experimental.'

0:10:560:10:57

He has a lot of great ideas that I think he has been afraid

0:10:570:11:00

of expressing before.

0:11:000:11:01

So, I just wanted to say to him,

0:11:010:11:03

"Don't worry about winning this competition."

0:11:030:11:05

Stop looking at them.

0:11:050:11:06

It's about you, as an artist,

0:11:060:11:08

using the platform to say what you want to say.

0:11:080:11:11

Good. Remember to zigzag.

0:11:110:11:13

Instead of me just walking straight in a line,

0:11:130:11:15

he would think of, like, a zigzag.

0:11:150:11:17

Just those little finishing touches that I'm going to personally

0:11:170:11:20

take away for myself, so if I'm ever creating or choreographing,

0:11:200:11:24

I'm going to think of Renegade's advice.

0:11:240:11:26

In her workshop with Rhimes,

0:11:280:11:30

Kate is challenged to bring out her personality in the pieces.

0:11:300:11:34

She's so interesting to watch. She's so quirky.

0:11:350:11:39

She's so experimental.

0:11:390:11:41

It's not too often that you will see a girl pop like a lady.

0:11:410:11:45

There's not many girls who embody their femininity with the popping,

0:11:450:11:48

but I feel like you could kind of tease us a little bit with,

0:11:480:11:51

-"I can go into that style but I'm going to hold it back."

-OK.

0:11:510:11:55

Going in with Rhimes, I felt like, "Ugh, I need to get my game on,"

0:11:570:12:02

but then coming out, I was so relieved.

0:12:020:12:04

Like, she made me feel like I had two strong solos

0:12:040:12:07

and I was ready to perform them.

0:12:070:12:08

Darren is a freestyle dancer, which means that much of his

0:12:120:12:15

performance will be improvised.

0:12:150:12:17

But for DJ Renegade, there's work needed on his storytelling.

0:12:170:12:20

'He's very competent at his style, but it's trying to get him to

0:12:220:12:27

'structure his freestyles so he has a better idea of what narrative

0:12:270:12:30

'he's trying to put across.'

0:12:300:12:33

Think of the space as, like, this is your...

0:12:330:12:35

This is where you're writing your story, right?

0:12:370:12:39

'Even though he's freestyling,'

0:12:420:12:44

'he needs to think about where he's starting, the point he's going to go

0:12:440:12:47

'through and how he's going to end his piece.'

0:12:470:12:50

How do you feel?

0:12:500:12:51

'He basically told me how to use the stage a wee bit more'

0:12:510:12:53

and told me how to be comfortable in my movement,

0:12:530:12:56

and how to continue my moves a bit longer

0:12:560:12:58

instead of just having that adrenaline rush

0:12:580:13:01

and throwing it away, which was really cool.

0:13:010:13:03

With only a week between the mentor sessions and the category finals,

0:13:070:13:11

the dancers leave with plenty to work on.

0:13:110:13:13

After winning this stage last time round,

0:13:150:13:18

there is a little pressure there.

0:13:180:13:19

Next week is crucial, really.

0:13:190:13:22

I've just need to take on board everything that I've been told

0:13:220:13:25

and just drill it.

0:13:250:13:26

Now, it's just about putting the graft in,

0:13:270:13:30

just making sure I really home in on the little details.

0:13:300:13:33

Now I've got to really step up my game and produce something special.

0:13:330:13:37

What I'm going to be working on is my performance,

0:13:390:13:42

really trying to tweak little bits and bobs.

0:13:420:13:45

I want to take risks, so I'm going to be practising

0:13:450:13:48

a lot more movement to take risks cos that's just how I work.

0:13:480:13:51

Over the next week, I'm literally banging in rehearsals while

0:13:530:13:57

doing college work, so it's going to be a bit of balance,

0:13:570:14:00

but I will be getting those hours in in the studio.

0:14:000:14:03

Sometimes I'm a bit too harsh on myself.

0:14:040:14:06

I just need to enjoy it instead of being that much of a critic.

0:14:060:14:12

I suppose that's the judges' job more than mine.

0:14:120:14:15

I should just enjoy it.

0:14:150:14:16

The Lowry Centre, Salford Quays.

0:14:200:14:23

It's late January and the day of the street dance final.

0:14:230:14:27

The dancers arrive for their stage rehearsals.

0:14:270:14:30

It's their first opportunity to run through their three pieces

0:14:300:14:34

with lighting and cameras.

0:14:340:14:36

On hand, their mentors Rhimes and DJ Renegade.

0:14:360:14:40

For the dancers, it's been months of preparation to get to this

0:14:410:14:45

stage of the competition.

0:14:450:14:46

The challenge now is to impress three of the UK's

0:14:460:14:49

leading dance experts.

0:14:490:14:51

They are, Tony Adigun,

0:14:520:14:55

founder and Artistic Director of Avant Garde Dance company.

0:14:550:15:00

I'm looking for their relationship with music.

0:15:000:15:02

I'm a big fan of music and how we move to music,

0:15:020:15:05

so for me it's how they marry those two things together.

0:15:050:15:09

Bringing what they've been training to the stage

0:15:090:15:11

and making it into a performance.

0:15:110:15:12

I'm looking for the dancer to have fun and let loose tonight.

0:15:120:15:16

Clara Bajadoo, a dancer, choreographer and lecturer,

0:15:160:15:20

specialising in house dance and hip-hop.

0:15:200:15:24

I'm going to be looking for something organic that would

0:15:240:15:27

come out from the dancer.

0:15:270:15:29

The winning performance for me tonight will have

0:15:300:15:33

a really good projection, cleanness of the movement,

0:15:330:15:37

understanding of the style, character and creativity.

0:15:370:15:42

And our general adjudicator Shobana Jeyasingh,

0:15:420:15:45

critically-acclaimed choreographer

0:15:450:15:47

and founder of Shobana Jeyasingh Dance company.

0:15:470:15:50

She'll be chairing the jury in all four Young Dancer category finals.

0:15:500:15:54

We need someone who can actually, while showing off their technique,

0:15:540:15:57

will also make us forget the technique

0:15:570:16:00

and just look at them as the person.

0:16:000:16:03

You need to be a super performer and communicate yourself as an artist.

0:16:030:16:08

First to dance in this street dance final

0:16:150:16:18

is 19-year-old Harry Barnes from Merseyside.

0:16:180:16:22

Every different dancer has their own character.

0:16:320:16:34

My character when I go on stage is very fun and jokey.

0:16:340:16:39

I'm very smiley throughout life anyway, so I like to dance that way.

0:16:390:16:44

Before he started dancing, there was another obsession driving Harry.

0:16:470:16:51

I started playing golf when I was seven, I think.

0:16:540:16:57

I played golf seriously for years and I didn't think anything

0:16:570:17:01

would take me away from golf.

0:17:010:17:04

Every day I was practising, practising hard.

0:17:040:17:06

When I was 12, I went to see a dance show.

0:17:060:17:10

I just enjoyed it that much that the next week I joined my first

0:17:150:17:18

dancing class.

0:17:180:17:20

Then I was just dancing all the time and golf just slowly got

0:17:200:17:23

pushed to the side.

0:17:230:17:25

Harry returns to BBC Young Dancer as reigning street dance champion.

0:17:260:17:30

# Go all the way if you know

0:17:300:17:32

# I'll give you the rest

0:17:320:17:33

# Now tell me what do... #

0:17:330:17:35

Harry Barnes.

0:17:350:17:37

Just had such a good time last time and it was just such

0:17:370:17:41

a positive experience that I just want to do it all over again.

0:17:410:17:45

I definitely move a little bit different now,

0:17:470:17:49

but a dancer's style always progresses, always moves on.

0:17:490:17:52

You'll never find something and just stick with it forever.

0:17:520:17:55

We're always looking to push ourselves and improve.

0:17:550:17:58

It's pretty exciting, to be honest,

0:18:000:18:02

especially when you've worked really hard on something,

0:18:020:18:04

to finally get to the day where, you know,

0:18:040:18:07

I get to share what I've made.

0:18:070:18:09

I'm excited and ready. Ready.

0:18:090:18:11

It just needs an audience for me to perform to now.

0:18:110:18:14

And, in the audience, Harry has plenty of support.

0:18:160:18:19

He opens his programme with a piece he's titled Trapped.

0:18:190:18:23

The idea of the whole piece is, like,

0:18:290:18:31

I'm trapped in the spotlight, I'm trying to get out and I can't.

'I'm most excited to be doing the duet,'

0:19:510:19:54

0:19:540:19:56

Just because, you know, I've never stood there and performed

0:19:560:19:59

a duo before, so I'm really excited for that.

0:19:590:20:02

0:21:410:21:45

My everyday personality comes out a little bit more in this one.

0:21:450:21:49

It's going to be my birthday tomorrow,

0:21:490:21:51

0:23:200:23:23

Charismatic and very popular,

0:23:290:23:32

that was Harry Barnes opening this street dance final.

0:23:320:23:35

You can see Harry and all of tonight's performances in full

0:23:350:23:38

on our website - bbc.co.uk/youngdancer

0:23:380:23:42

Harry's performance was very, very strong.

0:23:460:23:49

When he worked with his partner,

0:23:490:23:50

the way they moved in the space was very impressive.

0:23:500:23:52

More than dance, it was a great performance.

0:23:520:23:55

Outstanding performer for sure.

0:23:550:23:57

He got the audience, he got us, he's got a great all-round energy.

0:23:570:24:02

Really great.

0:24:020:24:03

Tonight, in one word, was just amazing.

0:24:030:24:07

The crowd seemed to enjoy it. I had a lot of supporters.

0:24:070:24:09

So, yeah, thanks to them for coming.

0:24:090:24:11

I came off buzzing after every piece. It was just amazing.

0:24:110:24:15

Next to dance, it's Tom Hughes Lloyd,

0:24:210:24:23

who is 18 and comes from Wrexham in North Wales.

0:24:230:24:26

I started dancing about eight years ago.

0:24:380:24:41

I never went to any classes.

0:24:440:24:46

I used to just copy dancers I'd see on YouTube.

0:24:460:24:49

I really like Michael Jackson, so I danced like him.

0:24:490:24:52

Then, afterwards, I went more into popping.

0:24:520:24:55

Now it feels like I have developed my own dance,

0:24:550:24:56

so I don't copy anybody anymore.

0:24:560:25:00

I just use what they do as inspiration and it gives

0:25:000:25:04

me ideas for my own thing.

0:25:040:25:05

Last summer, Tom completed a performing arts course

0:25:070:25:10

at Coleg Cambria in Wrexham and he's back to help out

0:25:100:25:13

with their winter showcase.

0:25:130:25:15

Tutor Jamie Jenkins saw his potential early on.

0:25:160:25:19

'It was amazing, like, I'd never seen anyone move like that.

0:25:210:25:24

'And the fact he has passion, the passion that he had for dancing

0:25:240:25:27

'just kind of came out.'

0:25:270:25:28

I was kind of like, "Whoa, this boy's got something."

0:25:280:25:32

I benefited a lot from the stuff we did at college.

0:25:320:25:35

Not only the dance technique, but the acting side

0:25:350:25:38

and how the dance and acting are actually, they relate.

0:25:380:25:42

Because, within acting, you're telling a story,

0:25:420:25:44

and with dance, you're telling a story.

0:25:440:25:46

So it's kind of, for me, it's very similar.

0:25:460:25:48

As well as working with the college students,

0:25:490:25:52

Tom also teaches dance one-to-one.

0:25:520:25:55

I met Rion a few years ago now.

0:25:550:25:58

He was going to quit dance at one point,

0:25:580:26:00

so I felt like I had seen potential in him and I said,

0:26:000:26:03

"No, you shouldn't quit. You're really good."

0:26:030:26:05

What we're doing is we're going this way.

0:26:050:26:07

Yeah, and your head will just go naturally with it.

0:26:070:26:10

'I began mentoring him after that and, since then,'

0:26:100:26:13

we've trained together and become really good friends.

0:26:130:26:15

Since I left college and I started working,

0:26:180:26:20

I've been doing as much dancing as I can,

0:26:200:26:22

making sure I'm just having fun with it, really.

0:26:220:26:24

But they always catch me at work dancing,

0:26:240:26:27

and I'm always trying to sneak in a bit of dancing

0:26:270:26:29

while I'm behind the bar.

0:26:290:26:30

At the moment, it's hard to find the time to dance,

0:26:300:26:33

but I make sure that I make time for dance.

0:26:330:26:35

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:26:370:26:41

The whole process has been so fun and, you know,

0:26:410:26:43

there was times where I felt really nervous,

0:26:430:26:45

but now I can't wait to just get on stage

0:26:450:26:48

and do what I've been working towards this whole time.

0:26:480:26:51

My first solo is Holding On.

0:26:510:26:54

I would say this one's like a release for me.

0:26:570:27:00

Because popping is associated with something

0:27:010:27:05

a bit more up-tempo,

0:27:050:27:06

doing this, really, I think, shows off what my style is

0:27:060:27:10

and how it's different to other people's.

0:29:310:29:33

Tom is joined by dance partner Max Ravel.

0:29:330:29:37

We decided to go for, like, an old-man theme.

0:29:370:29:41

We've tried to go for a bit of comedy,

0:29:430:29:45

but the main theme is that anybody can dance

0:29:450:29:47

and anybody can have fun with dance.

0:31:290:31:32

I found a kind of fluency

0:31:380:31:40

in Tom's work, which was very pleasing,

0:31:400:31:43

and I particularly liked the duet.

0:31:430:31:45

I found it really witty and I really kind of got the story.

0:31:450:31:50

I think he made some great choices tonight. I loved his duet.

0:31:500:31:53

I loved the characterisation, the movement.

0:31:530:31:56

My highlight was dancing with Max.

0:31:560:31:58

That's the first time I've ever done a duo.

0:31:580:32:00

Yeah, all the hard work paid off, so I'm really happy.

0:32:000:32:04

Still to come in this street dance final,

0:32:050:32:08

17-year-old Kate Morris...

0:32:080:32:10

..and 21-year-old Darren Hamilton.

0:32:110:32:14

Next to perform, 21-year-old Jodelle Douglas.

0:32:140:32:19

This is the second time Jodelle has taken part in the competition,

0:32:230:32:27

having reached the category finals in 2015.

0:32:270:32:31

I took a lot from it and I've gained a lot of experience

0:32:310:32:34

from the show last time,

0:32:340:32:36

so I was just very privileged to have got through

0:32:360:32:40

to that stage back then, and I'm here again.

0:32:400:32:43

My dancing has changed a lot.

0:32:450:32:48

Now I have a name for my movement, which I call the art within.

0:32:480:32:52

My vision, the person I am today, has changed dramatically.

0:32:590:33:04

Since his appearance in BBC Young Dancer two years ago,

0:33:040:33:07

Jodelle has moved from his hometown of Bristol to Cardiff.

0:33:070:33:11

Back in Bristol, we didn't have the privilege of a dance studio.

0:33:110:33:14

Now I've realised that it's really important.

0:33:140:33:17

Moving to Cardiff, when I first went in the studio,

0:33:170:33:20

I just didn't know what to do with myself.

0:33:200:33:23

It's just crazy to have mirrors in front of you,

0:33:230:33:26

to be able to just roll along the floor and really, like,

0:33:260:33:28

express your movement to the fullest was amazing.

0:33:280:33:32

We used to use the shop windows and whatever reflection.

0:33:340:33:38

Even to this day, I find it hard to dance to myself in the mirror.

0:33:380:33:42

Yeah, and then chest to the other side.

0:33:420:33:45

To prepare for his final,

0:33:450:33:46

Jodelle has been working with Liara Barussi,

0:33:460:33:49

creative director of Cardiff-based Jukebox Collective.

0:33:490:33:52

Jodelle's dance has matured, I'd say,

0:33:520:33:55

from becoming a dancer to an artist.

0:33:550:33:57

He's really come to know himself and identify his vision,

0:33:570:34:03

and it's really beautiful to just see how that's developed,

0:34:030:34:07

and he has a very clear identity

0:34:070:34:09

of how he wants to present his work as an artist.

0:34:090:34:13

I want people to see the change - the change in the vision,

0:34:150:34:20

my movement, and the direction I'm taking me, as an artist, in.

0:34:200:34:23

I just want to be able to express what I feel inside to people

0:34:250:34:30

and, yeah, whoever gets inspired, then good on you.

0:34:450:34:49

0:34:490:34:52

and it's got a little bit of a theme to it, which is my heart,

0:34:520:34:55

He's a unique mover. I like the quality that he has.

Like, there's not a day where I don't dance.

0:40:310:40:32

It's everything for me.

0:40:320:40:34

I started dancing at the age of three and a half

0:40:390:40:42

in my hometown, Maesteg, at Miss Sian Dixon's ballet school.

0:40:420:40:46

It's always been in my life. It has never not been in my life.

0:40:480:40:51

Two, two, three. One, two, three. Two, two, three.

0:40:510:40:54

Kate is now studying dance

0:40:540:40:56

as part of a performing arts diploma at Bridgend College.

0:40:560:41:00

I'm doing jazz and contemporary and ballet.

0:41:000:41:03

I feel like all dance intertwines, like, of course.

0:41:030:41:06

Like, the performance,

0:41:060:41:07

when you get on a stage, you perform, you're a performer.

0:41:070:41:10

You're not just flouncing around the stage.

0:41:100:41:13

You are there to show off what you can do,

0:41:130:41:16

so, yeah, I do feel like they all link in some way.

0:41:160:41:19

Two. One, two, four, one.

0:41:190:41:21

Kate first discovered a love for street dance

0:41:210:41:24

when she took up classes at Jukebox Studios in Cardiff,

0:41:240:41:27

where she now teaches in her spare time.

0:41:270:41:30

I love being in the studio every second of every minute of every day.

0:41:320:41:35

It's where it all started. It is my life, so...

0:41:360:41:40

Like Jodelle, Kate has been working with Jukebox Collective's

0:41:420:41:45

creative director Liara Barussi

0:41:450:41:48

to prepare for this street dance final.

0:41:480:41:50

Let's talk about your piece.

0:41:500:41:52

'I start a new piece with a story in my head.

0:41:520:41:55

'It's normally already planned out in my head,

0:41:550:41:57

'just how I'm going to'

0:41:570:42:00

embody it in the movement.

0:42:000:42:01

Kate really understands her movement.

0:42:040:42:06

She understands how to story tell or to describe an emotion.

0:42:060:42:10

She really has a bit more of a personal relationship with dance.

0:42:100:42:15

-SHE LAUGHS

-You're making me laugh!

0:42:180:42:21

There's loads of dancers in there. Like, there's a lot. I just do...

0:42:210:42:24

I, like, want to stand out from the crowd and be very unique.

0:42:240:42:28

The preparations for the category finals are so exciting.

0:42:290:42:33

I'm ready. I'm confident with all my three pieces, so I'm ready to go.

0:42:330:42:37

Kate's first dance is called Lotus.

0:42:370:42:41

I called it Lotus because they grow up to be a beautiful thing,

0:42:410:42:45

so that's what I feel like I am doing within the dance.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:300:45:34

For her duet, Kate teamed up with dancer Evion Hackett

0:45:380:45:41

to perform a piece titled Kindred.

0:45:410:45:44

She ends her performance with another self-choreographed work

0:45:500:45:54

called Drifter.

0:45:560:46:00

It's literally about me, my personality.

0:46:030:46:05

It's like a bedroom scene, how, like, I just like to dance.

0:46:050:46:08

-Like, any distractions, I'm like...

-SHE SIGHS

0:46:080:46:11

I just want to... Just let me dance!

0:46:110:46:12

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:47:440:47:47

I just loved watching Kate.

0:47:550:47:56

She brought a real special quality.

0:47:560:47:59

I just found her very fascinating

0:47:590:48:01

because she just seemed very different to the other dancers.

0:48:010:48:04

Kate's a thinker. I like her presentation.

0:48:040:48:06

It's not just about her movement, it's about what happens around it.

0:48:060:48:09

So, the context she's putting her dance into

0:48:090:48:12

is really interesting and really entertaining at the same time.

0:48:120:48:15

Being up there on stage, they just come to life, my performances,

0:48:150:48:18

so I'm really happy with all of them.

0:48:180:48:20

The atmosphere backstage has been, like, amazing.

0:48:200:48:22

Everyone's hugging each other, like, "Oh, yeah, sick. Well done."

0:48:220:48:25

Last to perform in this street dance final

0:48:320:48:35

is 21-year-old Darren Hamilton from Glasgow.

0:48:350:48:39

I don't think I ever thought

0:48:430:48:44

that dancing was going to be a major part of my life.

0:48:440:48:46

I think it was just one of those things that just kind of happened.

0:48:460:48:49

Once I was involved, it's like there was no getting out of it.

0:48:490:48:51

Originally from Fife, Darren moved to Glasgow two years ago

0:48:510:48:55

to develop his dancing.

0:48:550:48:56

The dancing's good in Glasgow.

0:48:560:48:58

Once you're here, you kind of fall in love with it,

0:48:580:49:01

so there was no going back after that.

0:49:010:49:03

He's a freestyler -

0:49:030:49:04

a form of street dance that's largely improvisational.

0:49:040:49:08

The style of dance that I do is popping.

0:49:090:49:11

It's like we've got a tool box of styles,

0:49:110:49:14

and we can use it any way we want and we can create anything we want.

0:49:140:49:17

We just have fun with it. It's fun.

0:49:170:49:20

When he's not dancing,

0:49:230:49:24

Darren works as an apprentice chef in a busy hotel.

0:49:240:49:28

I do enjoy my work. I'm finding a real passion for it,

0:49:280:49:31

as much as a passion for my dancing,

0:49:310:49:33

so it's good that I've got two things in my life

0:49:330:49:36

that I really enjoy, you know.

0:49:360:49:38

Like, after a shift, you're really tired

0:49:430:49:45

and you're trying to motivate yourself to dance,

0:49:450:49:48

but as soon as you start, like,

0:49:480:49:50

the training's worth it and you enjoy it.

0:49:500:49:51

Twice a week, Darren attends Dimestop,

0:49:540:49:57

a collective promoting the popping dance style.

0:49:570:50:00

Dimestop was set up basically to build the scene

0:50:000:50:04

and make sure that, if people were teaching it,

0:50:040:50:06

they were teaching it right. When I started dancing,

0:50:060:50:09

it was like just learning from videos and copying stuff.

0:50:090:50:12

But when I came to Dimestop,

0:50:120:50:13

I noticed a difference because I was learning the real popping,

0:50:130:50:17

and there's a massive growth in me,

0:50:170:50:18

so, like, that's why I love it here so much.

0:50:180:50:20

I feel pumped. Like, there is a definite rush.

0:50:230:50:26

It's an excitement, as well, like,

0:50:260:50:28

cos I've never done nothing quite like this.

0:50:280:50:31

And everybody's really good, like,

0:50:310:50:32

and it's exciting just to be part of it.

0:50:320:50:34

To begin, Darren is freestyling to a track by Justice

0:50:340:50:38

called Waters Of Nazareth.

0:50:380:50:40

MUSIC: Waters Of Nazareth by Justice

0:50:400:50:43

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:51:450:51:49

For his duet, Darren is joined by his friend Stephen Blake.

0:51:540:51:59

Working with Stephen is perfect.

0:52:010:52:03

Like, when we dance on our own, a lot of the time,

0:52:030:52:05

our doubts and anxieties hold us back with what we're doing.

0:52:050:52:07

But when we're on stage together, I think we become, like,

0:52:070:52:10

really cheeky lads. Just enjoy ourselves.

MUSIC: Feel Like That by Dogg Master

0:52:130:52:16

And to bring this street dance final to a close,

0:52:550:52:58

Darren's final piece is titled To My Soul.

0:52:580:53:01

MUSIC: To My Soul by Jerry Folk

0:53:010:53:05

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:54:430:54:47

Darren, I thought, made some really,

0:54:560:54:58

really strong choices

0:54:580:55:00

and was very entertaining.

0:55:000:55:02

You can see his maturity within his technique.

0:55:020:55:05

He comes, really, from an improvisation background,

0:55:050:55:09

as a freestyler, and it was good to see him

0:55:090:55:11

develop characters on stage.

0:55:110:55:13

When you're there, you see all the faces and that

0:55:130:55:16

and you're like, "Oh, my days. This is a big performance."

0:55:160:55:18

It went really well. I did what I set out to do and I enjoyed it.

0:55:180:55:22

Darren Hamilton bringing this BBC Young Dancer

0:55:220:55:26

street dance final to a close.

0:55:320:55:34

Now, before we have the result,

0:55:370:55:39

here's a quick reminder of all the dancers.

0:55:390:55:41

I thought it was an absolutely terrific evening.

0:55:430:55:45

As a judge, it was very tough because each one of them had

0:55:450:55:48

a very special quality.

0:55:480:55:50

The standard tonight was amazing,

0:55:500:55:52

very energetic, very well thought through.

0:55:520:55:55

All five dancers used popping,

0:55:550:55:57

but they all brought the technique with their own character,

0:55:570:56:00

so it was really versatile and really interesting to watch.

0:56:000:56:04

To try and find who was the best was quite a difficult task.

0:56:040:56:07

Their performative skills were very, very impressive

0:56:070:56:10

and I really enjoyed watching all of them.

0:56:100:56:12

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:160:56:20

I would like to begin by congratulating

0:56:210:56:24

each and every one of the dancers that we saw tonight.

0:56:240:56:27

I'm really pleased to announce

0:56:270:56:29

that the winner of the BBC Young Dancer 2017

0:56:290:56:34

street dance final is...

0:56:340:56:37

Jodelle Douglas.

0:56:370:56:39

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:390:56:43

-Thank you.

-You really deserve it. Very well done.

0:56:530:56:55

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:570:57:01

Jodelle, I really liked because of his character,

0:57:010:57:04

and because of the creativity of his movement.

0:57:040:57:08

I think there's an element of his virtuosity, but also

0:57:080:57:11

he kept it real, so there was a great amount of integrity.

0:57:110:57:15

He delivered, to a very good standard

0:57:150:57:18

on all the three pieces of performance.

0:57:180:57:21

All three of the judges were very impressed.

0:57:210:57:23

It's something, like, above technique that we were looking for

0:57:230:57:27

and Jodelle was definitely a winner tonight.

0:57:270:57:31

-PHONE RINGS ON PHONE:

-'Jodelle?'

0:57:310:57:33

Hi, Mum. I won.

0:57:330:57:35

'Oh, my goodness! That's amazing!'

0:57:350:57:40

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:57:400:57:45

Being able to, like, express is just amazing

0:57:450:57:48

and to actually win, it's just a bonus, you know.

0:57:480:57:51

It's a cherry on top. So, yeah, very happy.

0:57:510:57:54

Jodelle Douglas - the winner of this year's street dance final.

0:57:570:58:02

A huge congratulations to him.

0:58:020:58:04

We'll be seeing him again in four weeks' time

0:58:040:58:06

when the competition moves here, to Sadler's Wells,

0:58:060:58:09

for the grand final of BBC Young Dancer 2017.

0:58:090:58:13

Next week, five more dancers are out to impress our expert jury

0:58:130:58:17

as we turn the spotlight on ballet.

0:58:170:58:20

It can grab your attention like that and suck you in.

0:58:210:58:25

We do dance because we love to do it.

0:58:250:58:27

It's not all serious all the time. Yeah, there's fun with it, so...

0:58:270:58:31

It's exciting. It's terrifying.

0:58:310:58:34

It means quite a lot to me that, all the work that I put in,

0:58:340:58:37

I can show to other people.

0:58:370:58:40

Never done a competition like BBC Young Dancer.

0:58:400:58:43

-It's really great.

-When you're on stage,

0:58:430:58:45

it just feels so natural and it's just a beautiful feeling.
