a tiny plastic brick has become part of all our childhoods. It's the

ultimate toy, isn't it? Because it doesn't have any rules. What Lego

allows you to do is dip into a big bucket of mess and pull out these

bricks and slowly make something which is uniquely yours. Made a

police station. It's a house on wheels. It's good! With wings. We

spend nearly ?3 billion a year on Lego and now it's expanding its

empire into Hollywood. Good morning apartment, ready to start the day...

Always be sure to keep the soap out of your... Lego might be an enormous

brand, but it has a strong relationship with the real buildings

around us. It is, after all, a brick. What actually goes on when

you play with Lego? You take a spatial unit and you add it to

another and there's a bigger space being built. You remember how you

Lego help us play at being architects. Most of us lose that

ability. But some people keep it and they haven't stopped building. I

wouldn't be able to imagine my childhood without Lego. The toys

they played with as children have helped inspire some of the most

important buildings of our time. Lego is not just a kids' toy.

There's a direct connection between Lego and the real world, the

buildings we create all around us. I think that Lego has changed the way

we think about architecture. Lego can transport you anywhere your

imagination can take you. So, I've come to Billund in Denmark,

:02:05.:02:10.

population 6,000, it's home to Legoland, Denmark's largest tourist

attraction outside Copenhagen. The only problem is, it's closed in

winter. But I'm here to see something much more exciting.

I have played with Lego since I was two or three years old. It's a

:02:34.:02:39.

complete dream come true to come to a Lego factory. In 2019 there will

:02:40.:02:45.

be more mini figures in the world than there actually are people.

You're joking? No, I'm not. It's like a maternity ward. Yeah! Lego

:02:51.:02:59.

produces 45 billion pieces a year, that's 1450 every second. I might

stick to architecture. Through Lego, we realise robots and Star Wars,

:03:07.:03:11.

spaceships and helicopters. At the root of all these creations is a

:03:12.:03:17.

simple brick. That's no accident. Lego's beginnings are steeped in

:03:18.:03:24.

building. The story of Lego begins here at this house in Billund, built

:03:25.:03:35.

in 1924. It was the creation a local carpenter called Ole Kirk

:03:36.:03:38.

Christiansen, who from humble beginnings would establish the

:03:39.:03:42.

mighty lowingo empire. -- Lego empire. He loved to play. You could

:03:43.:03:46.

walk by outside and you would probably get a bucket of water on

:03:47.:03:51.

your head. That was how he was. He was really, really a great man. He

:03:52.:03:55.

loved children. In England we say we have a big character, a really big

:03:56.:04:00.

character. Yeah. A few years later. He's plumper. Yeah u, he is. --

:04:01.:04:05.

Yeah, he is. Married, three kids, wife, doing well for himself. Yes.

:04:06.:04:12.

He was the carpenter of choice here, crafting barns and furniture for the

:04:13.:04:17.

farming community. His lofty ambition didn't stop at wood. It

:04:18.:04:21.

included the brick. These are some of the buildings he make. This is a

:04:22.:04:25.

farm. This is from 1921. We're talking real buildings. Real

:04:26.:04:30.

buildings, yeah. That's amazing to see them. That's where it all began.

:04:31.:04:35.

Everything was looking great, probably have ended up being a

:04:36.:04:39.

carpenter for the rest of life, but then things started going not so

:04:40.:04:49.

well. In 1932, tragedy struck. Ole's wife died in child birth, leaving

:04:50.:04:55.

him as a widower with four children. When the Great Depression spread

:04:56.:04:59.

across Europe, Ole and his neighbours faced ruin. 1932 there

:05:00.:05:05.

was a crisis, there was no income. He couldn't get the money the

:05:06.:05:08.

farmers owed him because they had none. The farmers no longer wanted

:05:09.:05:14.

barns or houses, so he decided to make goods he could afford. These

:05:15.:05:20.

are the kind of toys he was making. They're quite... Robust. Es! I like

:05:21.:05:25.

the eyes at the front. These are some of the first ones. He was

:05:26.:05:28.

pretty much experimenting at that time, trying something new. In 1934,

:05:29.:05:39.

Ole named his business Lego after the Danish loget -- legot, to play

:05:40.:05:48.

well. His brother didn't like it. They didn't think it was a serious

:05:49.:05:51.

business with a future, but they were wrong! You could say.

:05:52.:06:03.

From the 1930s, toys were becoming serious business. Prewar a lot of

:06:04.:06:08.

the most influential philosophers and early years educators had come

:06:09.:06:11.

to the conclusion that children learn through play, they learn

:06:12.:06:15.

through their hands and the hand is an extension of the brain. The idea

:06:16.:06:22.

of play and developing toys, which encouraged a certain kind of good

play,if you like, learning through play, became very much the currency

of the age. During the Nazi occupation of

Denmark, anxious parents bought the wooden toys to cheer up their

children. Wood was needed for fuel, when Denmark was running out. So in

1946, Ole bought a new bit of kit, a plastic moulding machine. You push

that, really hard. You just keep it there. This would have been

:07:04.:07:08.

cutting-edge technology in 1946. Yeah, it was. He started off making

:07:09.:07:12.

toy teddy bears, but he knew the machine could do more.

researching, developing and developing plastic toys. The brick

:07:26.:07:28.

planning was a big subject, I love the fact that Lego, the first thing

it does is a town plan. We needed engineers. We needed

:08:12.:08:25.

architects. How do you get engineers and architects? Well you show them

:08:26.:08:29.

buildings and you encourage them to construct those buildings with

:08:30.:08:34.

building blocks. There's a long tradition of architects seeking out

:08:35.:08:40.

construction toys as children. In the 1870s a young boy called Francis

:08:41.:08:46.

played with these blocks. This early play sparks a passion for structure,

:08:47.:08:51.

space and form and was a powerful outlet for creative exploration.

:08:52.:08:58.

That boy grew up to build buildings like these, the great American ark

:08:59.:09:02.

tech Frank Lloyd Wright blew away Victorian, stuffy conventional

:09:03.:09:07.

architecture with his asymmetric compositions, which he said were

:09:08.:09:13.

heavily influenced by Frobels blocks, he continued to use the

:09:14.:09:18.

blocks when a grown-up architect. Alone, the blocks inspired Le

:09:19.:09:23.

Corbusier and Walter Gropius, the founders of modernism. The

:09:24.:09:33.

architecture they pioneered in the 1920s was stripped down and

:09:34.:09:38.

unadorned but full of idealistic intention. They believed in an equal

:09:39.:09:43.

and humane society with affordable, well-designed housing for all. And

:09:44.:09:47.

the post-war years gave them and their followers the chance to

:09:48.:09:52.

realise their dream through a radical innovation. The prefab.

:09:53.:09:59.

Flat-pack or system-built housing, produced a factory, and assembled on

:10:00.:10:04.

site was a low-cost vision of utopia. By the 1970s, these

:10:05.:10:10.

ubiquitous, often austere towers were proving unpopular. People were

:10:11.:10:14.

desperate for fresh ideas. You could see in the centre of every city,

:10:15.:10:19.

there were glass blocks, the boring box was a phrase. It failed in terms

:10:20.:10:26.

of taste because it didn't have enough variety. Two schools of

:10:27.:10:31.

architecture emerged that challenged the post-war earnest, modernist

:10:32.:10:34.

blocks, one was embodied by Lego, the other by the other great

:10:35.:10:38.

construction toy of the Twentieth Century, Meccano.

Mechanics made easy, Meccano in the 60s was Britain's most popular

:10:44.:10:49.

construction toy. Lego's popularity was growing, but it couldn't yet

:10:50.:10:53.

match Meccano's might. Children everywhere saved up their pocket

:10:54.:11:00.

money to buy it. I fell to it like a duck to water. One of the reasons I

:11:01.:11:04.

became an architect, I'm sure, because I had spent a lot of time

:11:05.:11:07.

playing with something which you could physically create things with.

:11:08.:11:10.

My partner, Richard Rogers played Meccano as a child. The processes

:11:11.:11:14.

which Meccano illustrated at the time are still endemic in our

:11:15.:11:22.

building. Through the spirit of Meccano, ark tech -- architects

:11:23.:11:28.

brought something everyone else wanted buried a prefab. Like the

:11:29.:11:33.

modernist blocks of the 50s, these buildings were made in a factory.

:11:34.:11:42.

Pop p due -- Pompey due is the classic -- Pompidou is the classic

:11:43.:11:46.

example. It's essentially a giant Meccano. Quick to build and

:11:47.:11:50.

assemble, like Pompidou, the Lloyds building was produced in a factory

:11:51.:11:54.

and brought to site on the back of a lorry. When I was a kid, this was

:11:55.:11:58.

the building that really turned me on to architecture. I'd never seen

:11:59.:12:02.

anything like it. Britain had never seen anything like it. Just look at

:12:03.:12:07.

it. This is architecture made through science and engineering and

:12:08.:12:10.

rather than hide that away, Richard Rogers celebrated it, putting the

:12:11.:12:19.

surfaces on the outside. The result is a building that's in the high

:12:20.:12:24.

pressure heart of the City, but doesn't feel that way. Inside, you

get this incredible sense of space. These vast open floors, which in the

:12:30.:12:33.

mid-80s were incredibly modern, radical in a stuffy old world of the

:12:34.:12:39.

City. They call this architecture hi-tech, engineering embodied in the

:12:40.:12:44.

architecture and infused with the spirit of Meccano. Meccano is a

:12:45.:12:49.

technological toy. In that sense, the thing that's interesting about

:12:50.:12:52.

Meccano and about a lot of the architecture of what's called

:12:53.:12:55.

hi-tech is it's actually understandable. You can understand

:12:56.:13:00.

how it's made. There's no mystery. That's the aesthetic of the

:13:01.:13:07.

building. By 1978, the year the Lloyds building was commissioned,

:13:08.:13:11.

Meccano was no longer the world's most popular construction toy. Lego

:13:12.:13:18.

was simpler, safer and appealed to much younger children and those who

:13:19.:13:21.

weren't very good with a spanner, like me. That very same year, a new

:13:22.:13:27.

school of architecture began to emerge. It had a strong sense of the

:13:28.:13:32.

building block, but not the bare concrete slabs of the 60s. These new

:13:33.:13:38.

buildings were fun. People were looking for a more playable --

:13:39.:13:45.

playful, accessible architecture. Post modernist brought back colour

:13:46.:13:50.

and metaphor. They may not have intentionally made their buildings

:13:51.:13:54.

look like Lego, but they were doing the same thing, reducing buildings

:13:55.:13:57.

to a language that everyone can understand, circles, cylinders,

:13:58.:14:02.

squares and triangles and creating great architecture from it. Number 1

:14:03.:14:08.

Poultry was created by one of the key figures in post modern

:14:09.:14:12.

architecture, James Stirling. Jim was always, he wanted to be

:14:13.:14:15.

different. If the world had caught up to him, he would go on somewhere

:14:16.:14:18.

else. He must have thought about Lego, when he was building, because

:14:19.:14:24.

they're put together like toy blocks. They're very volume-metric.

:14:25.:14:32.

He was a classicist and a Legocist if you like. By the time Stirling's

:14:33.:14:38.

Number 1 Poultry was completed in 1997, post modernism was a dirty

:14:39.:14:45.

word. Too many bad post modern buildings were run up quickly. It

:14:46.:14:48.

suffered because things are copied to death and ripped off and

:14:49.:14:55.

prostituted and watered down. Post modernism went down. Although post

:14:56.:15:02.

modernism fell from favour, Lego's influence on architecture remained.

:15:03.:15:05.

In the 70s, as plastic bricks dominated the world's playrooms and

:15:06.:15:11.

toy shops, a new breed of architects was born. Its Rising Star has

:15:12.:15:21.

started to build. Isn't that great, that sound. Fantastic. A pile of

:15:22.:15:27.

potential. Exactly! At 39 years old, Bjarke Ingels is the leading

:15:28.:15:33.

architect of his generation and a huge lowingo fan. -- Lego fan. I

:15:34.:15:38.

wouldn't be able to imagine my childhood without Lego. What would

:15:39.:15:42.

you build, when you were a kid? It was very much these James Bond

:15:43.:15:49.

villain's lairs. Secret revolving doors or sliding walls. I was into

:15:50.:15:55.

the idea that the architecture could contain unseen possibilities, things

:15:56.:15:58.

seem to be a certain way, but then they could actually do so much more.

:15:59.:16:05.

Bjork's childhood vision has influenced his architecture today.

:16:06.:16:11.

Where others see problems, he sees potential. He's won prestigious

:16:12.:16:16.

commissions all over the world. He's construct being a waste incinerator

:16:17.:16:26.

that powers a ski slope. Designed in entirely carbon neutral island in

:16:27.:16:29.

the Caspian Sea and he will soon turn a pile of bricks into the Lego

:16:30.:16:34.

House, the corporations new museum and HQ in Billund. It's his dream

:16:35.:16:39.

commission and it might inspire generations of children to see Lego

:16:40.:16:47.

as more than a toy. Lego is really like the most blatant way to turn an

:16:48.:16:54.

idea into action. You don't need tools or knives, even glue. It's a

:16:55.:16:58.

bit like grabbing a pencil and just drawing away on paper. Immediate,

:16:59.:17:03.

you've got it. It's a three dimensional sketch tool. He used

:17:04.:17:07.

this tool to find a modern solution to a familiar problem. How to make

:17:08.:17:12.

imaginative buildings from prefab blocks. Our labour wages are so high

:17:13.:17:19.

and our weather is so wet, you actually want to minimise the time

:17:20.:17:22.

spent on the construction site. You want to arrive with a lot of

:17:23.:17:27.

preassembled elements and put them together quickly. In effect, over

:17:28.:17:31.

the last 60 years Denmark has become a cub trip entirely -- country

:17:32.:17:39.

entirely built out of Lego, or at least prefabricated MoD udges. If

:17:40.:17:43.

people are -- modules, if people are all different, why do suddenly all

:17:44.:17:47.

buildings look the same? Den marks towers of today provoke boredom. But

:17:48.:17:53.

the towers from the past inspire wonder. He was determined to create

:17:54.:18:00.

a tower block every bit as fantastical, creative and fun. Could

:18:01.:18:05.

he build with the restrictions of Danish construction, using prefab

:18:06.:18:09.

blocks that all look the same? He turned to the bricks of his

:18:10.:18:16.

childhood to propose an idea of the modern high rise that is as

:18:17.:18:21.

inventive as radical. These are conceived as individual Lego blocks.

:18:22.:18:25.

You preassemble everything at home and put the blocks together when you

:18:26.:18:29.

arrive at the site. From a factory-made kit of identical moth

:18:30.:18:33.

you'ds he has created not -- modules, he has created a lush,

:18:34.:18:38.

man-made landscape of valleys and mountains. It's a crazy project. A

:18:39.:18:43.

lot of architects can be serious and that's why they build serious boxes.

Did it inspire people? It really made people look at architecture in

:18:49.:18:54.

a completely different way. In architecture, when you have a chance

:18:55.:18:59.

to intervene, you should try to realise the city you dream about

living in. It doesn't have to be like it is. Our cities are only the

:19:04.:19:07.

way they are because that's how far we've gotten. That's what Lego

:19:08.:19:10.

enables anyone to do, just to put together, in a very simple way, a

:19:11.:19:15.

lot of almost identical bricks to create what a city can be and what a

:19:16.:19:25.

city should be. Your own city might not be that great, but on the living

:19:26.:19:30.

room floor, you can re-arrange things and make the world as it

:19:31.:19:33.

should be. I think the important thing behind Lego is that it's a

:19:34.:19:37.

better world, that it's a chance to improve on the world as it is now.

:19:38.:19:44.

So it's a chance to be idealistic. Utopian ideals, child-like dreams of

:19:45.:19:47.

the future, through the innocence of play, we tap into our visions of

:19:48.:19:52.

remaking the world anew. For the artist, Olafur Eliasson, play is

:19:53.:19:58.

full of powerful possibility. What actually goes on when you play with

:19:59.:20:03.

Lego? It's a very interesting thing. You take a spatial unit and then you

:20:04.:20:10.

compose it, almost like a score, you compose it together and you add it

:20:11.:20:15.

consumer, you're a producer. Olafur Eliasson turns a public into

installation. In 2005, he travelled to Albania and used play to bring

people together as they built a new city from scratch. After 50 years of

Communism, the transition from dictatorship to democracy looked

uncertain. For the collectivity project, Eliasson took three tons of

white Lego and dumped them in the town square of Tirana, Albania's

capital city. I thought of this table experiment as a way of

creating a little Parliament, where people on the street would negotiate

:21:15.:21:19.

with each other. In Albania the idea of open political debate was new and

:21:20.:21:26.

so was Lego. Lego had not had a life in Albania. For a lot of people it

:21:27.:21:30.

was like, wow, look at this. Isn't this plastic interesting. What is it

:21:31.:21:35.

called? And what does it do? People were invited to rebuild Tirana with

:21:36.:21:40.

Lego. What does it mean to share space? What does it mean to

:21:41.:21:44.

coproduce space? Suddenly you're next to somebody you might not know,

:21:45.:21:48.

then you see that person is building something and can I add something to

:21:49.:21:53.

that? Or can I put something next to it? Are we building a city together.

:21:54.:22:01.

To Olafur this city had radical potential. I think it added elements

:22:02.:22:04.

to a discussion which was already going on. And trying to develop a

:22:05.:22:08.

set of values, which would reflect where the country was going. The

:22:09.:22:15.

fact that you can look upon your own city, in which you are, as a model,

:22:16.:22:20.

if you start to look at reality as a model, it is much more likely to be

:22:21.:22:26.

negotiable. If it's negotiable, it can change. To Olafur, Lego is a

:22:27.:22:31.

blank canvas of simple, white bricks. For most of us, there's a

:22:32.:22:35.

lot more on offer, even a controversial pink-coloured range,

:22:36.:22:39.

especially for girls. The Lego of today is available in 9,000

:22:40.:22:45.

different colours, shapes and sizes. It's quite incredible. Look at that,

:22:46.:22:49.

bags within bags, with these incredibly, complicated little rings

:22:50.:22:55.

and God only knows what that is, a little whip on something. It started

:22:56.:23:00.

as simple bricks and you can still get these simple bricks, but it's

:23:01.:23:04.

become less like this creative freedom and more like a jigsaw

:23:05.:23:10.

puzzle. Do you know what fills my heart with fear? That! Look at that.

:23:11.:23:15.

When I was a kid you had a limited range of options, you had to use

:23:16.:23:18.

your imagination and think outside the box. Now it's all so complicated

:23:19.:23:23.

and branded. It's drifted far from its original ideals. I think that

:23:24.:23:28.

the Lego corporation is deeply divided as to what it's trying to

:23:29.:23:36.

do. It's heavily compromised by its commercial ambitions. In recent

:23:37.:23:38.

years it's become a corporation that's really ripping off the

:23:39.:23:42.

imagination of children by selling them ready-made nonsense from films.

:23:43.:23:48.

Rest in pieces. In fact the new Lego movie, out this week, tackles this

:23:49.:23:53.

very issue of directed versus free, creative play, settling on the idea

:23:54.:23:57.

that it takes all sorts to be a Lego enthusiast. Relax everybody, I'm

:23:58.:24:03.

here. Batman! And of course, once you've watched it, you can buy The

Lego Movie kit and recaet it at home. -- re-create it at home. Yet

our simple desire to build from only blocks and imagination hasn't gone

away. It's the digital world that's picking up where plastic bricks left

Minecraft is a virtual world where players build their own creations

with 3D blocks. With more than 42 million users, it's a huge, global

phenomenon. Minecraft is a digital equivalent of Lego. It's not the

:24:55.:24:58.

re-invention of Lego, it's the spirit of what Lego is. Lego is

:24:59.:25:02.

about building a building. Minecraft is about building a world, building

:25:03.:25:07.

an environment, bimeding an environment -- building an

:25:08.:25:09.

environment that me and my friends can go around. Everything is cuby?

:25:10.:25:14.

Everything is pixellated. Oh, right OK. I'm getting it. As soon as you

:25:15.:25:20.

go into the world and you put down one block, you get it, I can put

:25:21.:25:23.

these blocks down. That's where it takes you on a journey of

:25:24.:25:28.

creativity. It's not like oh, do this, do that. It's do you want to

:25:29.:25:32.

do this, because you can. If you're thinking, I want to make a massive

:25:33.:25:37.

castle, you can. But you just have to have the resources. There are no

:25:38.:25:41.

limits. There are no limits to what you can do. Through the internet,

:25:42.:25:45.

huge groups of players can join forces and build things together.

:25:46.:25:49.

Any number of people can join in. How many of your friends play this?

:25:50.:25:56.

A lot. Basically everyone in the class. Everyone in my class probably

:25:57.:26:04.

as well. It socialises the game. When people come together and create

:26:05.:26:11.

one thing, just some amazing things start happening. The scale of

:26:12.:26:16.

Minecraft is epic, but its worlds aren't limited to fantasy.

Architects and town planners are using this building block game to

transform our cities into places we actually want to live in. This is my

:26:25.:26:29.

old neighbourhood in East London. There's definitely room for

improvement, but how do you make yourself heard? You wouldn't want to

walk down there at midnight on your own. Through Minecraft, we'll all be
