To take us through the cinema releases of this week, Mark Kermode.

:00:19.:00:25.

We have 22 Jump Street, the sequel to 21 Jump Street which

:00:26.:00:36.

was the spin off of the kitsch TV show.

:00:37.:00:38.

And we also have Frutvale Station, the harrowing retelling

:00:39.:00:41.

Now, we have Princess Grace and Nicole Kidman saving the state of

:00:42.:00:51.

Monaco for millionaires who want to evade tax?

:00:52.:00:55.

When Grace of Monaco opened in Cannes, the phrase everyone said

:00:56.:01:01.

The story is essentially that begins with Grace Kelly filming

:01:02.:01:10.

There's a crisis going on, in Algiers.

:01:11.:01:17.

The French think they would like a tax.

:01:18.:01:25.

In the middle of this, Alfred Hitchcock wants Grace Kelly

:01:26.:01:28.

to go back to Hollywood and film Marnie.

:01:29.:01:30.

Who told you to cut it? Who told you to cut it that short?

:01:31.:01:42.

She isn't, she's a princess of Monaco.

:01:43.:01:54.

Oh, come on, you can't can't be the great moderniser and...

:01:55.:01:57.

We will make a show of how happy you are.

:01:58.:02:01.

I didn't make you marry me. What can Hollywood give you that I can't.

:02:02.:02:26.

It's just a movie. You were just an actress.

:02:27.:02:30.

All the time you are watching the movie, you are wondering

:02:31.:02:37.

if it is deliberately unbelievably stilted or is it some homage to the

:02:38.:02:41.

You think, nobody could have made a movie this bad by mistake?

:02:42.:02:46.

We get the Grace Kelly quote of, my life as a fairy tale is

:02:47.:02:50.

Then we get the worst fairy tale, the director and writer said they

:02:51.:02:54.

In this fairy tale, what happened is that Grace Kelly bats her eyelids

:02:55.:02:59.

at Charles de Gaulle who appears to be blockading Monaco to stop

:03:00.:03:02.

And then she says she believes in fairies and everyone says,

:03:03.:03:08.

You are watching, thinking there must be some underlying...

:03:09.:03:17.

This will tie it all back to reality.

:03:18.:03:21.

Nicole Kidman, it is not entirely her fault.

:03:22.:03:27.

Every minute of the film, her `` the camera is in her face.

:03:28.:03:33.

But every time we back off, we get Tim Roth doing

:03:34.:03:40.

We get the most character `` caricatured

:03:41.:03:45.

I can see why people who are interested

:03:46.:03:54.

But getting cross with it is foolish.

:03:55.:03:58.

It is such a spectacularly ill`conceived meringue of a film.

:03:59.:04:04.

All you can do is sit there, slack`jawed.

:04:05.:04:07.

Often, when films play in Cannes and critics react very badly,

:04:08.:04:11.

To have been in the room seeing this for

:04:12.:04:20.

Right, 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street ` what will they think of

:04:21.:04:32.

One of the funniest part of this film is the end credits sequence.

:04:33.:04:49.

This film does the whole thing about where do we go next with

:04:50.:04:52.

21 Jump Street was taken from a TV show. It was a parody

:04:53.:04:58.

Channing Tatum was at the centre of it.

:04:59.:05:01.

The first movie did much better than anybody expected, let's just do

:05:02.:05:04.

That gag was done in Muppets: Most Wanted.

:05:05.:05:07.

The sequel is not as good as the original.

:05:08.:05:11.

However, it is funny enough that it can get away with it.

:05:12.:05:15.

The final sequence is funny but I have the rule

:05:16.:05:18.

about comedy that you have to laugh six times for it to count.

:05:19.:05:22.

It is not brilliant, but does the job.

:05:23.:05:34.

The action sequences, you don't need them.

:05:35.:05:37.

And if you are bored with the World Cup, this is something else.

:05:38.:05:48.

And this is two thirds as funny as the original.

:05:49.:05:50.

It is about the shooting of Oscar Grant on New Year's Day in 2009. We

:05:51.:06:13.

start with the cell phone footage and we go in time.

:06:14.:06:17.

You know what, baby, they are just firecrackers.

:06:18.:06:31.

You are safe inside with your cousins.

:06:32.:06:33.

I tell you what, when we get up in the morning, we will play.

:06:34.:06:45.

And then after that, guess what we'll do?

:06:46.:06:48.

Daddy will then get your favourite pizza.

:06:49.:07:08.

We'll get something for Mummy because she can't have carbs.

:07:09.:07:18.

`` we will eat money's because she can't have carbs.

:07:19.:07:24.

The story is shocking and it is a somewhat unremarkable film and it

:07:25.:07:27.

There is an awful, overwhelming sense that you are moving towards

:07:28.:07:31.

But I think the film itself is not an extraordinary piece of work.

:07:32.:07:37.

But the central performance is a genuine rising star performance.

:07:38.:07:44.

The thrust of the film is to engage you with the central character.

:07:45.:07:51.

He is flawed but you are interested him `` interested in him.

:07:52.:08:06.

The actor does a good job of fleshing it out.

:08:07.:08:16.

Now, your best of the week is Ken Loach's film.

:08:17.:08:19.

Jimmy's Hall is a story set in Ireland in he set up the hall as a

:08:20.:08:40.

He was run out of town by the clergy.

:08:41.:08:44.

It is an important story with a solid historical backdrop.

:08:45.:09:03.

But highlighted as a movie. The way users dance and movie,

:09:04.:09:05.

the characters are engaging and likeable and not two`dimensional.

:09:06.:09:08.

There is interesting conversations between the two central characters.

:09:09.:09:10.

They are at loggerheads, on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

:09:11.:09:13.

But also, there was one scene where Jimmy dances with his old sweetheart

:09:14.:09:18.

who has gone of with someone else and nothing happens.

:09:19.:09:21.

Ken Loach gets accused of making didactic movies but they are not.

:09:22.:09:25.

He engages with real stories, he's interested in history and politics.

:09:26.:09:28.

But more important he is interested in real people.

:09:29.:09:31.

That is probably why your next choice is Le Passe, the past.

:09:32.:09:43.

Set in France, it is a story about people in crisis.

:09:44.:09:55.

A fantastic central performance by Isabel Huppert.

:09:56.:09:57.

I thought it was a wonderful piece of work.

:09:58.:10:04.
