the Olympic old muddle. We will have the latest tennis from

the ATP world finals in London. `` gold medal. Now it is time for

:00:07.:00:09.

Film Review. Hello and welcome to Film Review on

:00:10.:00:26.

BBC News. To take us through this week is Mark Kermode. What have we

:00:27.:00:36.

got? We have Gravity where Sandra Bullock and George Clooney get lost

:00:37.:00:39.

in space. We have how to survive a play, about how many people took

:00:40.:00:47.

their destinies into their own hands. And we have Seduced And

:00:48.:00:54.

Abandoned which is supposed to be a look at the movie business. Gravity,

:00:55.:01:02.

I want to see this. We have talked about this before. At the London

:01:03.:01:06.

film Festival we were talking about it in the rain. Everybody pretty

:01:07.:01:14.

much knows what the setup is. The director is the one who made the

:01:15.:01:20.

best Harry Potter film. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are out

:01:21.:01:26.

in space when they receive news and avalanche of space debris is heading

:01:27.:01:30.

their way. The next thing you know, they are essentially knocked out

:01:31.:01:34.

into space. The rest of the film is a story of how two people flying

:01:35.:01:40.

around in space can or cannot find their way back home. Here is a clip.

:01:41.:01:47.

Wait. The tank is empty. We are going to hit hard. Grab anything you

:01:48.:01:58.

can. What do I do? ! What do I do? ! This is amazing. You have to imagine

:01:59.:03:01.

that on the biggest screen you can find. Also... You are going to save

:03:02.:03:09.

the 3`D thing. You will we cant be helped career of rubbishing 3`D. It

:03:10.:03:16.

is an exceptional film inasmuch as I would recommend you see it in 3`D.

:03:17.:03:20.

It is the only case I have seen in which I ain't the 3`D is so

:03:21.:03:24.

intrinsic to the story, intrinsic to the design. The film is beautifully

:03:25.:03:31.

lit and I had less problem with the light lost you get from 3`D glasses.

:03:32.:03:35.

A lot of it is surrounded by the abyss of space. The characters

:03:36.:03:39.

floating in the middle of the screen overcomes the problem is of 3`D

:03:40.:03:45.

breaking the edge of the frame. But it is kind of a fairground ride of a

:03:46.:03:50.

film. I don't mean that in a bad way. This is a film that wants to

:03:51.:03:57.

visually engulf you, overwhelm you, spin you around and leave you

:03:58.:04:04.

completely discombobulated. The way it does it best is on a massive

:04:05.:04:09.

screen. It hurts me to say this, and in 3`D. The way the visuals have

:04:10.:04:14.

been done is extraordinary. It disintegrates the boundary of what

:04:15.:04:17.

you think of as animation and what you think of as live action. The

:04:18.:04:29.

interesting thing is, it is a popcorn movie, it is 91 minutes

:04:30.:04:35.

long. When was the last time you saw a science`fiction film that was 91

:04:36.:04:41.

minutes long. It is 91 minutes, do the thing and then out. A lot of the

:04:42.:04:49.

dialogue is very generic, and I really enjoyed it. It is one of

:04:50.:04:54.

those things you have two C in the biggest, loudest possible way. And

:04:55.:05:00.

for once, and for once only, in 3`D. Now you are not going to talk. How

:05:01.:05:11.

To Survive A Plague is cultural story? It is a documentary type

:05:12.:05:20.

film. They got together a coalition of people, they came together to

:05:21.:05:27.

have some kind of organisation when the government and the health bodies

:05:28.:05:30.

were failing to deal with the emerging AIDS crisis. One of the

:05:31.:05:37.

things that is most extraordinary is it is done from 700 hours of

:05:38.:05:42.

footage. You hear from people who did the most incredible things in

:05:43.:05:46.

terms of organising disparate groups, firstly to draw attention to

:05:47.:05:51.

the situation but then develop a level of organisation that both the

:05:52.:05:57.

government and the pharmaceutical companies would say, they know

:05:58.:06:01.

better than us, they know how to deal with this. It is very moving.

:06:02.:06:06.

It is very, very powerful. It is often heartbreaking and sad. But it

:06:07.:06:13.

is ultimately uplifting and it is a call to arms and an indication of

:06:14.:06:17.

what can happen when desperate groups of people in bleak

:06:18.:06:19.

circumstances come together and say, how can we make this situation

:06:20.:06:24.

better? They change their world. They do. This is a mock

:06:25.:06:43.

documentary, to raise money for a film which will take Last Tango In

:06:44.:06:52.

Paris to Iraq. Here is a clip. The reason I wanted to do this film

:06:53.:07:07.

is because the movie industry has changed. I don't know how much

:07:08.:07:15.

longer it can go in the age of this technology. It is splintering the

:07:16.:07:17.

audience. You go back to recreate this

:07:18.:07:34.

experience. You go back with another chance to do something you want to

:07:35.:07:50.

do in film`making. You will watch Seduced And Abandoned over and over

:07:51.:07:56.

again. He goes to the Cannes film Festival and discovers it is glitzy.

:07:57.:08:02.

Yes, we already know that. But then they discover when it comes to

:08:03.:08:06.

films, art is secondary to money. Yes, we know that. You see them

:08:07.:08:11.

raising money for the film. Remember the film, The Greatest Movie Ever

:08:12.:08:22.

Sold and that did this story much better, much funnier and with much

:08:23.:08:27.

more point. This one suffered from a level of indulgence. It was very

:08:28.:08:31.

pleased with itself and it thought you would be pleased to spend time

:08:32.:08:39.

with these people. It is a lot less smart and funny than it thinks it

:08:40.:08:55.

is. The good news is, The Selfish Giant is brilliant? It is brilliant.

:08:56.:09:02.

It is inspired by the Oscar Wilde story to some extent, but also Kes.

:09:03.:09:14.

It is heartbreaking, it is beautifully played. She is a

:09:15.:09:20.

wonderful director. I want as many people as possible to go and see

:09:21.:09:23.

it. It is worth getting excited about. It also engages in one of our

:09:24.:09:31.

problems as society, which is asserting kids don't fit in. The

:09:32.:09:41.

story is, The Selfish Giant wants to keep the kids out of his garden, but

:09:42.:09:45.

what he does not realise is if the kids don't have anywhere to play,

:09:46.:09:52.

the garden will wither and die. Of these kids are sidelined by society

:09:53.:09:55.

and it is wonderful, and you should see it. Your DVD is The Great

:09:56.:10:12.

Gatsby? It is a film adaptation. I was not sold by the 3`D on this for

:10:13.:10:17.

example. If you see it in the cinema, 2`D is better. But they have

:10:18.:10:22.

taken a look at it which I think will capture the imagination of

:10:23.:10:26.

younger audiences. Anything that rings audiences back to that novel

:10:27.:10:32.

is wonderful. It is a bit like having the book shouted at you. The

:10:33.:10:43.

Great Gatsby 2013 is not about paying? This is a good, sincere and

:10:44.:10:51.

solid attempt. That is it that this week.

:10:52.:10:51.

Thanks for watching. It has been a busy day of whether

:10:52.:11:10.

and we will keep you updated on the latest of the Typhoon as it heads

:11:11.:11:13.

towards Vietnam. Back home you will

:11:14.:11:14.
