Mercedes. I will have more for you in the next

hour but now it is time for the film Hello and welcome to the film review

on BBC News. We have Jason Solomons to take us through this week's

releases. What we have? We have Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond the

Pines. We also have Simon Killer, which is an American in Paris and

new film by Antonio Campos. We finish with Tom Cruise in oblivion.

The Place Beyond the Pines sentenced to nine -- to me like a good one.

This is the best film I have seen this year so far. It is a film that

I did not know much about. I don't want to spoil it. Leave the room now

if you do not want to know. It is about Ryan Gosling who plays an

outlaw, he becomes a bank robber. The film changes pace and it becomes

about the policeman who is chasing him, played by Bradley Cooper. Then

it changes again and becomes about another generation. It is an epic

crime film and becomes extremely Internet. The bit we look at is

Bradley Cooper dealing with police corruption, is he heroic or zero? --

extremely input -- extremely Internet. This is just a small

fraction of what is going on. say another word. I want. -- I want.

What do you expect me to do? You are joking, right? You are the chief.

This is your problem. This is our problem in the police department and

I am bringing it to your attention because that is what I should do.

that what you should do, rat out other cops?

Bradley Cooper is to raise six. is building on his reputation. --

Bradley Cooper is terrific. He is more than just hangover. He is

upright and right-thinking in the film and then he gets drawn in to

the ways of the police. It is about love but it is also about

corruption. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have love story at the start.

It is about how things get muddled over a period and how history will

see you. I thought it was really smart and beautifully done. It is

almost like a Western type movie. Let us move on. I guess Simon

Killer, the clue is in the title. This is a strange new film by

Antonio Campos. He is part of this new young indie crew which are very

current in India at -- in America. I suppose it is like an American cycle

in Paris. It is a flipside to the American romantic films. Here is

young students who goes to Paris for a gap year to recover from a

relationship and finds himself completely alienate it. He does not

know where to turn. He takes up with a young prostitute. He stays with a

friend and a friend of his mother's. He smokes a lot. He does

not know what he can do. Then he realises he has a frightening power

and he grows into the monster of the title. Is this a low-budget the

talented Mr Ripley? There is an element of that. Is he going to

become a killer? It tells you at the start this is not going to be a

jolly romp. It does not make him like a serial killer. There are no

concessions to the audience. It is lovable and enjoyable in a weird

way. As long as you know going in you will not like it. It is not

romantic. It is another antihero. It is an interesting companion piece to

The Place Beyond the Pines because it is examining the hero and what

cinema does about these creatures. Now for oblivion. Yes, talking about

heroes, Tom Cruise always plays the hero. He is in the film which is

set, I don't know when. There is one of those vice overs. I have no

notion when it starts. It was such a confusing voice-over. No one knew

what was going on. We have a product of him with Andrea Riseborough. --

we have a clip. Earth has been invaded. They live in beautiful

houses which float in the ear. I do not know what they are talking

about. Do you have any memories before the

mission? Our job is not to remember. Remember. Do you remember her?Jack,

it was a beacon which brought her down. We do not know who she is or

what she is. I'm sorry but that is almost comedy

dialogue. I do not who wrote it. There are elements of total recall,

planet of the apes, New York lying in the rubble. He is wearing the

same T-shirt. Olga Kurylenko has been delivered in a box. It is such

a derivative science-fiction movie. I thought there would be a joke

somewhere but no where does one laugh. I laughed.The future seems

like a terribly miserable place. instead of watching the film, get

the matrix out. The art and design is very futuristic and I like that.

That is the only thing I like. best film of the week is in the

house. It is in French. You explain. Francois Ozon is a very prolific and

elegant French film maker. Probably his best film yet, starring Kristin

Scott Thomas. It is about out teacher in a school educating a boy

about how to write fiction. He goes into another person's house and

tells the story about how the teacher becomes obsessed with his

homework. It is very smart piece of work. It is not as good as its first

hour. Kristin Scott Thomas is a frustrated bourgeois housewife.

DVD of the week is spirit of 45, that is 1945. It is an archive

footage filmed by Ken Loach. It is out on DVD this it is a booth for

the Thatcher government. They nationalised everything. Mrs

Thatcher comes in and privatised everything. He does miss out the bit

in between, Callaghan and the Winter of discontent. How should we judge

this? Is its historical? I thought It is very personal. It is his take

on things. It is actually asking if that generation remembers the spirit

of 45 then they should get it back again. What is interesting is that

there was a point where we are all in this together which is absolutely

true. I find this very powerful and it made me cry for what we have

lost. I am not seeing his politics were correct historically, but there
