Hello and welcome to the Film Review. To take us through this | :00:29. | :00:35.
week's cinema releases, Mark commode. We have got a very mixed | :00:35. | :00:45.
:00:45. | :00:48. | ||
bag. We have I And So Excited. We have Dead Man Down. That is a | :00:48. | :00:58.
:00:58. | :00:58. | ||
version of the Deal with the Dragon Tattoo. -- the Goal. Something camp | :00:58. | :01:08.
to start with. Have you seen the trailers? The fact the original | :01:08. | :01:15.
title has two meanings has been discussed. This is basically a sex | :01:15. | :01:20.
comedy set largely on an aeroplane and largely set in an airport. At | :01:20. | :01:25.
the beginning, the aeroplane takes off. They have a problem with the | :01:25. | :01:29.
landing gear. They tried to take off. That is as far as it goes for | :01:29. | :01:35.
the narrative. Essentially, it has been described as being a sort of | :01:35. | :01:40.
socio-political satire. The passengers of the aeroplane are | :01:40. | :01:45.
people who are all treated badly by the authorities in Spain. That is | :01:45. | :01:49.
portrayed by the cabin staff and the stewards and stewardesses who | :01:49. | :01:59.
:01:59. | :01:59. | ||
Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds | :01:59. | :03:05.
I am a confident passenger already. You get the general gist. What then | :03:05. | :03:11.
happens is as they realise they are in trouble, they decide that as far | :03:11. | :03:16.
as economy class passengers are concerned, they will drag them. The | :03:16. | :03:21.
interesting thing about the film is that if you understand the | :03:21. | :03:25.
references, there are some strong political underpinnings. The | :03:25. | :03:30.
airport is a famous one. You meet - - immediately understand this is to | :03:30. | :03:35.
do with political and financial corruption. You see the newspaper | :03:35. | :03:39.
about financial scandals. When the plane lands, one of them may be | :03:39. | :03:44.
arrested. There are all of the secret lives. There is a socio- | :03:44. | :03:47.
political underpinning. But if that does not strike a chord with you, | :03:47. | :03:51.
as it may not outside of Spain, what you are left with is the | :03:51. | :03:56.
question of whether this is funny or not. I have to say it isn't | :03:56. | :04:01.
anything like as funny as it should be. It's a shame. Is he the clips | :04:01. | :04:04.
and you think it will be funny. There is that musical clip in which | :04:04. | :04:12.
they are all lip-synching. And the director has an extraordinary | :04:12. | :04:16.
reputation, going back to his earlier career, for outrageous | :04:16. | :04:20.
comedies, sexy, subversive, doing things that are shocking. | :04:20. | :04:27.
Intriguing and interesting. But the film itself is very much a bit drab, | :04:27. | :04:34.
washed out. What you really want is for it to be a really great, bawdy, | :04:34. | :04:42.
eg, sexy comedy. But he has made something that is strangely Telopea | :04:42. | :04:49.
-- televisual. If the political satire stuff does not hit home, you | :04:49. | :04:53.
are just left unfortunately with a rather live comedy. The whole gag | :04:53. | :05:02.
is the Kate has -- the plane has nowhere to land. But I love him as | :05:02. | :05:10.
a producer. He is an extraordinary film-maker. It's a real shame that | :05:10. | :05:15.
it is as disappointing as it is. Not funny enough? | :05:15. | :05:20.
No. And I wanted to laugh. The claim of insufficient laughter is a | :05:20. | :05:24.
real shame. If what left? | :05:24. | :05:33.
For -- what next. This is essentially a mixture of | :05:33. | :05:39.
things. On one hand it's a gangland thriller, Colin Farrell working for | :05:39. | :05:45.
a mob boss, it is also a woman who wants revenge on the man who'd | :05:45. | :05:49.
drunk drove her. She was involved in a collision. Since then she has | :05:49. | :05:53.
been dealing with the scars and that changed her life. She wants | :05:53. | :05:58.
Colin Farrell to get revenge for her. She also has a strange | :05:58. | :06:02.
relationship with her mother, who is very into baking and cooking. | :06:02. | :06:07.
You are looking at me strangely. We do not mention Tupperware very | :06:07. | :06:10.
often. In the middle of this, there is an | :06:10. | :06:15.
interesting character film. However, the film company wants to sell it | :06:15. | :06:20.
as an action thriller. Chasing, guns and day -- and explosions. | :06:20. | :06:25.
That is the least interesting part of the film. The most interesting | :06:25. | :06:29.
is the character stuff. Well- observed details in the mother- | :06:29. | :06:34.
daughter of relationship. The mother is desperate for the | :06:34. | :06:37.
daughter to get back out there. That is the stuff, it appears to me, | :06:38. | :06:41.
the directive is interested in. But the film does it has to be an | :06:41. | :06:46.
explosive action thriller. It ends up being a mixed bag. If you are | :06:46. | :06:49.
looking for interesting character the trail, with some great | :06:49. | :06:55.
performances, and the actress does a great job, with what is really a | :06:55. | :07:00.
messy script, she is great. But if you want a straight out action | :07:00. | :07:05.
thriller, you will wonder why the woman playing the mother talks | :07:05. | :07:09.
about cookies and Tupperware. That is the film not -- that I am | :07:09. | :07:12.
interested in, not the one sold by the poster. | :07:12. | :07:16.
I would happily spend one hour were looking at them talking about | :07:16. | :07:21.
Tupperware and cakes. All-Stars? | :07:21. | :07:28.
This is a home-grown street dance film for the younger viewers. A | :07:28. | :07:31.
junior school musical. Done in the very broad and colourful strokes | :07:31. | :07:36.
of... Do you remember the double- deckers? Films that were bright, | :07:36. | :07:41.
brash and breezy. The story is that kids have a place where they beat, | :07:41. | :07:45.
it is called the garage, council is going to knock it down unless they | :07:45. | :07:49.
saved the day by putting on a show that will involve them all pulling | :07:49. | :07:51.
together. I feel like I have been there | :07:51. | :08:01.
:08:01. | :08:12. | ||
before. Why are we call that? Because we | :08:12. | :08:16.
all have completely different talents but we are All-Stars. | :08:16. | :08:22.
is the dumbest vain for anything I have ever heard. -- dumbest name. | :08:22. | :08:30.
am allergic to those. Also lactose intolerant. I just threw up in my | :08:30. | :08:35.
mouth a little bit. The battle is the main event. People will pay to | :08:35. | :08:43.
watch. It will save the garage. don't know why you are here. Look, | :08:43. | :08:48.
we are used to putting it hours of training. This dancing thing will | :08:48. | :08:58.
:08:58. | :09:01. | ||
be no problem. Show us. But who will dance? U -- you will. | :09:01. | :09:06.
It is very easy to sneer at this kind of film. Actually, I thought | :09:06. | :09:11.
it was kind of charming. There are some big names, as far as the | :09:11. | :09:15.
grown-ups go. But the young cast really make it good. It's a very | :09:15. | :09:21.
sweet-natured film. We have seen it before. But it has some great | :09:21. | :09:26.
dancing and also has these interesting dream sequences, which | :09:26. | :09:34.
are nostalgic of older films. There is a ballroom dancing sequence. A | :09:34. | :09:39.
man imagines himself find -- fight against Warriors made entirely of | :09:39. | :09:43.
paper. It has more ambition than perhaps one would expect from | :09:43. | :09:47.
something which appears from the outside to be so generic. It will | :09:47. | :09:51.
not change the world. You are seeing the black and white dancing | :09:51. | :09:56.
now. It is quite charming. I sat in a room full of critics, who were | :09:56. | :10:00.
kind of sniffy about it because it is playing to a young audience, but | :10:00. | :10:05.
I have nothing against that. It was done with a smile on its faced, it | :10:05. | :10:09.
will not set the world alight but there isn't that much great kids' | :10:09. | :10:13.
entertainment round, outside of animation. I thought this was a | :10:13. | :10:16.
refreshing change. And did the young characters are | :10:16. | :10:21.
likeable and that matters in a film like this. -- and the young. | :10:21. | :10:26.
And you do like them. This is not a narrative twists film... | :10:26. | :10:32.
Off no. But you want them to succeed. -- no. | :10:32. | :10:38.
And he won't leave disappointed. What is the best out there? | :10:38. | :10:44.
In the Fog is a very harrowing war film. It is basically a story about | :10:44. | :10:50.
loyalty and betrayal, about the way in which appearing to have their -- | :10:50. | :10:55.
the trade your combat can be worst thing. It has very few cuts in the | :10:55. | :11:01.
film. 72 in the whole length. It takes its time, is moody and | :11:01. | :11:11.
:11:11. | :11:11. | ||
atmospheric. A little bit like Come and See. It is poetic and courting | :11:11. | :11:18.
and not depressing but very challenging. -- haunting. It did | :11:18. | :11:21.
that thing war movies should do, which is ask questions about | :11:21. | :11:25.
conflict, rather than just dramatising them. It's a very fine | :11:25. | :11:29.
piece of work. Finally, what is the best DVD at | :11:29. | :11:33.
the moment? Life of Pi is out on DVD and Blu- | :11:33. | :11:39.
ray. On Blu-ray, it is the 3D version. You saw it in the cinema. | :11:39. | :11:43.
I saw it in 3D. I thought it worked. And I am not | :11:43. | :11:48.
necessarily a convert but it work. I am dead sceptical about 3D. I | :11:48. | :11:52.
have seen it in both and I prefer the two D version because it is | :11:52. | :11:56.
bright and clear. But of all 3D films, I thought it was at the top | :11:56. | :12:04.
end. -- 2D. But it's a brilliant piece of storytelling. It's a story | :12:05. | :12:09.
about storytelling in the first place. Which story do you want it | :12:09. | :12:15.
to be about? A guide cast adrift in the ocean with a tiger? It is about | :12:15. | :12:19.
religion, politics, all of these things. But it never seems to be. | :12:19. | :12:23.
It just seems to be an interesting and fantastic story that asks you | :12:23. | :12:27.
what you want to believe. I thought it was beautifully rendered. The | :12:27. | :12:31.
special effects are amazing. You don't notice they are special | :12:31. | :12:35.
effects. You don't say, wow, look at those pixels! You just believe | :12:35. | :12:38.
you are cast adrift with a kid and a tiger. | :12:38. | :12:42.
And because it's a great story, it has been transferred to DVD, it | :12:42. | :12:44.
does not take a great deal away from it. | :12:45. | :12:49.
It is definitely something you can watch as a family film. It has some | :12:49. | :12:56.
challenging things in it. But it's a film that everybody can watch and | :12:56. | :13:02.
then afterwards talk about and discuss. Lot of people said it is | :13:02. | :13:07.
not a film that transfer as well from the book but that is not true. | :13:07. | :13:11.
Ang Lee did a fantastic role. It a great performance as well. | :13:11. | :13:17. |
