one-day international between the West Indies and England. And a | :00:00. | :00:00.
report from the track cycling Championships. Now it is time for | :00:00. | :00:00.
the Film Review. Hello and welcome to the Film Review | :00:00. | :00:25.
here on BBC News. To take us through this week's cinema releases and | :00:26. | :00:29.
discuss the Oscars, Mark Kermode. We have Non Stop, The Book Thief, an | :00:30. | :00:41.
adaptation of Marcus Zusak's acclaimed novel and We Are What We | :00:42. | :00:46.
Are, a remake of a Mexican cannibal movie. | :00:47. | :00:53.
Right, Non Stop. Liam Neeson started out as a sensitive character actor | :00:54. | :01:00.
and now he is the go to action guy. The story behind nonstop is he is an | :01:01. | :01:05.
Air Marshal and he has a drink problem. He is on and aeroplane and | :01:06. | :01:14.
he gets text messages from someone saying they are going to kill | :01:15. | :01:21.
someone. He starts interrogating the passengers. Here is how he does it. | :01:22. | :01:30.
What happened to Amsterdam? Show me your pass. What is your name? Why? | :01:31. | :01:39.
Take it easy! I didn't do anything! I have rights! What the hell is | :01:40. | :01:51.
going on? The threat is real. I have a suspect in custody, I need a | :01:52. | :01:57.
background check, his name is Tom Bowen. Your supervisor -- you | :01:58. | :02:09.
threatened your supervisor. I did not threaten anyone. I need a seat | :02:10. | :02:16.
check on seat 23. If three minutes, someone on this plane is going to | :02:17. | :02:21.
die. Do you hear me? I'm sorry, I find it hysterically funny. It is | :02:22. | :02:27.
entertaining up to a point. The story is he hits a bunch of people | :02:28. | :02:38.
before someone eventually opens up. If you look at a film like Read Why, | :02:39. | :02:47.
, it is essentially a story like murder on the Orient express but on | :02:48. | :02:51.
an aeroplane. It is not as good as it ought to be. It is fun but not as | :02:52. | :02:58.
fun as some other upmarket films. The great comparison is, put it next | :02:59. | :03:08.
to Red Eye. I'm concerned about how he got a text message on a plane. He | :03:09. | :03:14.
is an Air Marshal. You have learned something new. Snakes on a plane is | :03:15. | :03:25.
probably better than this? No, it is a terrible movie. I went in thinking | :03:26. | :03:30.
I want great big popcorn fun. It is OK. It has one of the worst endings | :03:31. | :03:34.
I have seen in a long time. The Book Thief? It is an up that | :03:35. | :03:42.
patient -- it is an adaptation of a very successful difficult novel. It | :03:43. | :03:46.
is about a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany. The problem is, they | :03:47. | :03:51.
have the narrator who is death himself. At the beginning we have | :03:52. | :03:56.
the voice of death. Then we have the young girl who becomes interested in | :03:57. | :03:59.
literature at the same time the Nazis are burning books. She is a | :04:00. | :04:06.
member of the Hitler youth. It is seeing the world through the eyes of | :04:07. | :04:13.
children. You think of other films, these are child I've use of the war | :04:14. | :04:17.
that managed to achieve a level of profundity. This does not manage to. | :04:18. | :04:23.
It is a very handsome looking film by Brian Percival who did Downton | :04:24. | :04:29.
Abbey. It feels a bit chocolate box like. It shies away from difficult | :04:30. | :04:34.
subject matter. The fact we have the narration by death makes it feel | :04:35. | :04:41.
more metaphysical than it is. Solid performances, looks very handsome | :04:42. | :04:48.
but does not scrape the subject -- the surface of the subject. If you | :04:49. | :04:52.
enjoyed the book you will think it is a failed adaptation. There is a | :04:53. | :04:57.
theory that around the time of the Oscars, a month afterwards, that is | :04:58. | :05:03.
when Hollywood buries movies which are not very good. The Book Thief | :05:04. | :05:07.
was thought of as an Oscar contender. The fact it and has one | :05:08. | :05:12.
nomination for the score says something, it is a movie which has | :05:13. | :05:20.
awards written over it but it has not been nominated. What about We | :05:21. | :05:28.
Are What We Are? At the beginning of the movie the mother dies. It is a | :05:29. | :05:35.
Mexican film but this relocates the action to America. It changes the | :05:36. | :05:43.
gender structure at the beginning. It is the mother who dies and the | :05:44. | :05:47.
daughters have to take over the responsibility for the family's | :05:48. | :05:50.
cannibalism, while at the same time wondering what it might be like to | :05:51. | :05:55.
have a normal life. Here is a clip. So how old are you now? 14. 14. | :05:56. | :06:12.
Grown-up. It happens. It does. Catch. Thank you. What is this? A | :06:13. | :06:25.
bone I found out back. My dad would know, he is good at bones. There is | :06:26. | :06:31.
an old surgery by the creek. We used to go there when we were little. How | :06:32. | :06:39.
far? Not far. Maybe I should take a look? This might be from one of our | :06:40. | :06:46.
relatives. I will show you where it is. You are really pretty, Rose, | :06:47. | :06:55.
just like your sister. I will see you later. CU. That is really | :06:56. | :07:02.
creepy. It has a very chilly palette, there | :07:03. | :07:06.
is a lot of rain, the whole area is sodden and there is a vale of tears | :07:07. | :07:11.
about the whole thing. They have fundamentally changed the genetic | :07:12. | :07:16.
structure of the original. The original was about suburban | :07:17. | :07:19.
alienation. The central theme is religious fundamentalism and | :07:20. | :07:24.
obsession. It gives you a sense that you feel sympathy for these | :07:25. | :07:28.
characters even though what they are doing seems completely terrible. | :07:29. | :07:31.
Although it is not perfect and I do not think it will in any way | :07:32. | :07:35.
challenge the supremacy of the original, I thought it was an honest | :07:36. | :07:40.
and thought-provoking attempt to take the central ideas of the | :07:41. | :07:43.
original film and do something original. We have seen so many | :07:44. | :07:47.
horror remakes where they are essentially take a foreign language | :07:48. | :07:50.
film and essentially gutted but change the language to English. This | :07:51. | :07:55.
is trying to do something different. The writer and director have had a | :07:56. | :08:01.
good bash at it. The two young women stars are really terrific, doing | :08:02. | :08:04.
that thing in which they are trying to find their own way but there is | :08:05. | :08:08.
this family heritage which they cannot escape. I thought it was | :08:09. | :08:12.
interesting. Interesting indeed. Now, the Oscars this weekend. Is it? | :08:13. | :08:23.
! Best movie? I think it will be 12 Years A Slave. Steve McQueen has | :08:24. | :08:28.
done a fantastic job of telling the story. I think you will like it as | :08:29. | :08:35.
much as I do. For me it was the absolute standout of the year. I | :08:36. | :08:41.
think best director I do not think we'll go to the same film. I suspect | :08:42. | :08:47.
it will be Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity. People say it is | :08:48. | :08:54.
brilliantly directed. How did they do that? How did they create that | :08:55. | :08:59.
world, essentially send us into space for 90 minutes. If you look at | :09:00. | :09:04.
the BAFTAs for example, I think there is an awful lot of love for | :09:05. | :09:09.
Alfonso Cuaron's work on Gravity as director and I suspect that means he | :09:10. | :09:14.
will beat Steve McQueen. I think he is a brilliant director but I think | :09:15. | :09:20.
Steve McQueen's direction of 12 Years A Slave is extraordinary. But | :09:21. | :09:24.
it is not in your face so people do not say it is a brilliantly directed | :09:25. | :09:29.
film but it is. Best male actor. We have talked about Matthew McConaghy | :09:30. | :09:34.
a lot. He has gone the opposite way of Liam Neeson. He has gone from | :09:35. | :09:39.
someone who you do not want to see the films to someone who is | :09:40. | :09:52.
terrific. He is in ten three macro. -- Dallas Buyers' Club. The bookies | :09:53. | :10:02.
are backing him to win. And I think he will. I think he has the edge. I | :10:03. | :10:09.
suspect in America it will be him. And what about Jared Leto? I suspect | :10:10. | :10:19.
that Jared Leto will win for Best supporting actor is at the Oscars. | :10:20. | :10:24.
Female? Cate Blanchett, you can put your house on it. Don't actually do | :10:25. | :10:29.
that! From the first moment of this film, people said clear Oscar | :10:30. | :10:38.
contender. The film is not perfect. It is not Woody Allen's best work | :10:39. | :10:42.
but she is Titanic in it. I think she will walk it. Any surprises or | :10:43. | :10:50.
breakthroughs? I am still holding out for bar code Abdi winning for | :10:51. | :10:55.
Captain Phillips. He was someone who you never see on screen. He's | :10:56. | :11:01.
holding his own against Tom Hanks, two-time Oscar winner. It is a very | :11:02. | :11:11.
good story. Abdi does a fantastic job. I would love to see him win. I | :11:12. | :11:17.
suspect he won't but I would love to. He made something completely | :11:18. | :11:24.
unacceptable but you started to have some sympathy. His casting was so | :11:25. | :11:28.
important. You had to care for him or the story would not work. You can | :11:29. | :11:32.
find more reviews from Mark on his blog. That is it from this week. | :11:33. | :11:37.
