As Australia and New Zealand prepare to do battle in the Rugby league | :00:00. | :00:00.
World Cup final, we will ask if the tournament has been a success. That | :00:00. | :00:11.
is at 630. Now it is time for the film review. | :00:12. | :00:22.
Hello and welcome to the Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this | :00:23. | :00:29.
week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode. So Mark, what do we have | :00:30. | :00:32.
this week? This is the week we see the release | :00:33. | :00:38.
of Saving Mr Banks. Mary Poppins is one of the greatest films ever made. | :00:39. | :00:46.
We have day of the flowers in which two sisters travel to Cuba. | :00:47. | :00:52.
And we have carried, do we need a remake of the 1976 classic? `` | :00:53. | :01:00.
Carrie. There are people in the world who do | :01:01. | :01:05.
not like Mary Poppins, I have not met any of them. The story of Saving | :01:06. | :01:12.
Mr Banks is that PL Travers goes to Los Angeles to do business with Walt | :01:13. | :01:17.
Disney. She needs the money, and what Disney does want to make the | :01:18. | :01:26.
film. She has a real contempt for what Walt Disney does. But she needs | :01:27. | :01:31.
the cash. After some persuasion, she decides to go to Los Angeles where | :01:32. | :01:37.
she meets Walt Disney is it `` what Disney. `` walked Disney. | :01:38. | :01:54.
Here you are maths. You cannot imagine how excited I am to finally | :01:55. | :01:59.
meet you. It is an honour. It is so nice to meet you. I cannot | :02:00. | :02:27.
believe I have PL Travers right here in my office. After almost 20 years. | :02:28. | :02:33.
20 long years. I wish you could have seen me there, being as a whippet, a | :02:34. | :02:38.
racehorse eyeballs. But look at you. `` racehorse I was. I love it. There | :02:39. | :02:49.
is so much to like about it. I think Mary Poppins is a wonderful film and | :02:50. | :02:55.
it is nice to see somebody paid tribute to it. This is an attempt to | :02:56. | :03:01.
find the roots of her character. But the real meat of it takes place in | :03:02. | :03:07.
California where she is resisting the film being made and everybody is | :03:08. | :03:13.
doing their best. Emma Thompson is brilliant at being very snappy, very | :03:14. | :03:20.
court, very short, but all the way through it, you also believe in her | :03:21. | :03:27.
own passion. It is something she loves. She does not want to give it | :03:28. | :03:33.
up. She never reconciled herself with the movie. I think the | :03:34. | :03:39.
relationship on`screen between her and Tom Hanks version of Walt Disney | :03:40. | :03:46.
is brilliant. He has just the right amount of steel underneath the | :03:47. | :03:50.
charm. There are some wonderful scenes with the Sherman brothers. | :03:51. | :03:59.
Some fantastic songs in the film, they are making them up and she just | :04:00. | :04:07.
says no, no, no,. I think the film will work for any audience. Emma | :04:08. | :04:12.
Thompson's performance is to reflect. I hope that she gets awards | :04:13. | :04:18.
recognition. Quite often, comic performances are overlooked. She is | :04:19. | :04:26.
snippy, witty, she is hard to like, but impossible not to love. | :04:27. | :04:32.
Day of the flowers. Two sisters take their father's | :04:33. | :04:36.
Ashes to Cuba where they want to scatter them on the eponymous day of | :04:37. | :04:46.
the flowers. There is a romantic element, a family story. What I | :04:47. | :04:56.
thought was charming about it is that it is very ambitious in the | :04:57. | :05:02.
amount of different stories `` storage plans `` story strand it | :05:03. | :05:11.
attempts to tie up. It does an impressive job of taking all these | :05:12. | :05:15.
disparate strands and making them work in a way that, by the time you | :05:16. | :05:22.
get to the end of it, you do care how it works out. You do genuinely | :05:23. | :05:28.
care about the characters. It is not perfect, but I thought it was a | :05:29. | :05:34.
sweet, charming movie. Also, the romance of Cuba. The reality of | :05:35. | :05:39.
Cuba, great place though it is, is very different from its romance. And | :05:40. | :05:45.
on this, one of the sisters is very political, the other is a | :05:46. | :05:49.
fashionista. It plays those ideas against it each other `` against | :05:50. | :05:58.
each other. Stephen King's first novel, the | :05:59. | :06:08.
story of a young girl with a fanatically religious mother who is | :06:09. | :06:12.
trying to stop her daughter from maturing. The daughter develops | :06:13. | :06:14.
telekinetic abilities. It is a trick. You see? It is going | :06:15. | :06:37.
to be OK. It is not too late. Do not doing this for me. I will have to | :06:38. | :06:47.
tell that boy the truth. From that sin was born and other, the worst | :06:48. | :07:01.
sin. I'm warning you, mother. Please don't do this. There will be a | :07:02. | :07:18.
judgement, carry. `` Carrie. Carrie is really sturdy story, well | :07:19. | :07:22.
written, an interesting story about a mother and daughter. The way that | :07:23. | :07:29.
girls can gang up on each other, their cruelty. This is a perfunctory | :07:30. | :07:37.
retelling of it. On one hand, it is very faithful to the novel, but you | :07:38. | :07:43.
kind of wonder what the point of it is? The first film was so well | :07:44. | :07:51.
done, an operatic version of the novel. People of our age remember | :07:52. | :08:01.
the final jumper at the end of the film. This is not a total failure, | :08:02. | :08:09.
but it is very ordinarily in its retelling of the story. It is | :08:10. | :08:14.
updated slightly with mobile phone footage. The actresses are very | :08:15. | :08:23.
good. But the problem is if you have seen Carrie already, there is | :08:24. | :08:28.
nothing new. If it brings a new audience to the story, fair enough. | :08:29. | :08:33.
But I am surprised by how ordinarily it is. | :08:34. | :08:40.
The Hunger Games to. Yes, it pretty much ups the ante. | :08:41. | :08:51.
This is about what the games mean in terms of oppressing the rest of | :08:52. | :08:54.
society. Jennifer Lawrence is absolutely fantastic. I'm not sure | :08:55. | :09:00.
how they are going to do the next one. This is really good, | :09:01. | :09:05.
intelligent, teen entertainment with a real edge and a fantastic central | :09:06. | :09:13.
portrayal by Jennifer Lawrence. And the made`for`TV aspect of utter | :09:14. | :09:19.
cruelty. It says a lot about reality television. Satirical, but still | :09:20. | :09:27.
tough. It is a roller`coaster ride. And the DVD is Alan Partridge, Alpha | :09:28. | :09:47.
Papa. I think it works. I went to see it in a cinema and I laughed all | :09:48. | :09:55.
the way through it. The story is that there is a siege at the radio | :09:56. | :10:03.
station for Alan Partridge works. I thought it was consistently funny. | :10:04. | :10:10.
Yes, it is a TV spin off, but if you want something that is going to make | :10:11. | :10:17.
you laugh, it will do the job. If you want something on a cold | :10:18. | :10:22.
November weekend, it will work. A quick reminder before we go that | :10:23. | :10:27.
you'll find more film news and reviews from Mark online. | :10:28. | :10:30.
That's at bbc.co.uk/markkermode. That's it for this week though. | :10:31. | :10:32.
Thanks for watching. Goodbye. Good evening. This weather front has | :10:33. | :10:50.
pushed further southwards bringing patchy, light rain, but quite behind | :10:51. | :10:58.
it `` but behind it, quite a clearance. The best of the sunshine | :10:59. | :11:03.
in eastern Scotland and the North East of England. The wind will start | :11:04. | :11:08.
to ease off, but the strongest of the wind this evening will move into | :11:09. | :11:14.
the North Sea. Over the next few days, those winds easing down. It | :11:15. | :11:20.
