of Team GB's medal hopefuls ahead of
16 days of competition across 11 | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
different ovens. That is all to
come, but now it is time for The | 0:00:00 | 0:00:07
Film Review. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:17
Hello and welcome to
The Film Review on BBC News. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
To take us through this week's
cinema releases is Mark Kermode. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
So Mark, what do we have this week? | 0:00:26 | 0:00:31
We have Black Panther, which opens
on Tuesday. We have Pad Man, based | 0:00:31 | 0:00:38
on a true, inspiring story. And 50
shades, it all comes to an end. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:48
Black Panther, why isn't it opening
until Tuesday? I presume it is | 0:00:48 | 0:00:56
because it will give it a long,
opening weekend. It has been eagerly | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
awaited. At the beginning of the
film, it is a technologically | 0:01:00 | 0:01:12
advanced society and they must keep
their secrets away from the rest of | 0:01:12 | 0:01:18
the world in case it falls into the
wrong hands. The movie plays great | 0:01:18 | 0:01:23
attention to detail. Here is a clip.
Remote system activated. Wait, which | 0:01:23 | 0:01:41
side of the road is it? Just drive.
Let's go! Look at your suit. You | 0:01:41 | 0:02:03
have been taking bullets. Run around
the track. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:18
Show off. That is the most generic
stuff. Its strengths are threefold. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:33
It looks great. It is superbly
realised will stop you feel you are | 0:02:33 | 0:02:42
in the world and it is well evoked.
The second thing, it sounds great, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:47
everything from the shop dialogue to
the superb music keeps the action | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
moving along. It really involves you
in the characters. It is well | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
played, the cast Angela Bassett, it
is a really good cast. But the most | 0:02:55 | 0:03:04
important thing is, you believe in
the world of the film. You believe | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
in the characters and you know and
understand the characters and both | 0:03:09 | 0:03:16
it -- motivation. I am not a comic
book fan. The thing about this is, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:22
it works on its own terms as a
stand-alone piece. There has been a | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
lot written about the importance of
this movie at this moment. But it | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
will only work if the film itself
works as a rip-roaring piece of | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
entertainment and it does. It is
important, but I can look at that | 0:03:34 | 0:03:41
and say, as well documented on this
programme, action films are not my | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
thing but they are the thing of my
other half. Our debate will be, is | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
it two hours of my life I will never
get back and she will say, no, we | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
have to go and see it. You get the
spectacle, all the stuff you want | 0:03:54 | 0:04:00
and it does look and sound
wonderful. But you know the | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
characters, you like them and
understand them. This is a world | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
where there are no gender imbalances
you often get. Women are on an equal | 0:04:07 | 0:04:13
playing field. When they have the
big fight sequences, even I | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
understood who everyone was, who
they were fighting, why they were | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
fighting and what they were trying
to do with their time. As a piece of | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
drama, it is well laid out. I
enjoyed it. I might have a hope. I | 0:04:25 | 0:04:32
am normally nudging going, what? Who
is this person? Why are they doing | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
that? No, I understand it. You give
me hope. Pad Man. Sounds unusual? It | 0:04:36 | 0:04:48
is a man in India who invented a
machine for making cheap sanitary | 0:04:48 | 0:04:59
pads. The hears a newlywed young man
who doesn't understand why his new | 0:04:59 | 0:05:06
bride spends five days every month
out of the house. Then he is ashamed | 0:05:06 | 0:05:11
why the women around him suffer
every month. He designs a machine to | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
make low-cost sanitary pads, which
will not only protect the health of | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
the women but provide employment.
But he does so in a culture in which | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
there is a lot of shame around this
subject. The director of the film | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
said he wanted to make the story as
accessible as possible. He does, it | 0:05:28 | 0:05:33
has slapstick comedy, music
sequences, laughs, romance and | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
tension. It is a joyful and
uplifting film. It is telling the | 0:05:36 | 0:05:42
story, which has its roots in a
real-life story. It is a | 0:05:42 | 0:05:47
fictionalised version of a real-life
story, but it does stick close to | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
the truth. It is charmingly done and
playing to the widest possible | 0:05:51 | 0:05:55
audience and succeeding in taking
that story and making it completely | 0:05:55 | 0:06:00
accessible it is charming and
uplifting. Another hit. Fantastic, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
wonderful story. Based on a true
story, which is more than be said | 0:06:05 | 0:06:19
the Fifty Shades. We do have
twilight to thank for this. The | 0:06:19 | 0:06:23
story is, having taint Christian
Grey, Anastasia must see if she can | 0:06:23 | 0:06:30
find independence and happiness
within their marriage. Here is the | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
clip. You do want to have kids
someday? Someday, sure. You don't | 0:06:33 | 0:06:43
really sound sure. You know what I
am sure about? It is great steak. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:51
Christian? Do you not want to have
kids? Of course. One day, just not | 0:06:51 | 0:07:01
now. I am not ready to share you
with anyone. He doesn't want | 0:07:01 | 0:07:13
children. I can tell her that now.
There is a narrative. It is easy to | 0:07:13 | 0:07:22
sneer at the Fifty Shades movies
because they are not very good. The | 0:07:22 | 0:07:28
first one, they tried to do
something interesting, but it was | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
too restricted. The second one was
directed and it stuck to the ear | 0:07:31 | 0:07:42
scraping dialogue of the source. It
is badly written, the actors are | 0:07:42 | 0:07:48
doing their best. James Foley is
directing on autopilot. He has been | 0:07:48 | 0:07:53
given this as a safe pair of hands.
It ends up looking like a promo | 0:07:53 | 0:07:58
simply for a glamorous lifestyle for
fast cars and designer apartments. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:04
Although there is some kinky fetters
vision, it is very peripheral. What | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
the film is interested in, look back
Private Jet! It is a film about | 0:08:08 | 0:08:15
possessions and about those kind of
aspirations. In the end it ends up | 0:08:15 | 0:08:20
looking like a commercial or pop
promo. It makes you look back to the | 0:08:20 | 0:08:26
days of nine and a half weeks and
think wow, what a ground-breaking, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
Citizen Kane like a movie that was.
I don't know why people get angry | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
because it is playing to a certain
audience who are devoted to it. It | 0:08:35 | 0:08:40
will pack the audience is out on the
first weekend. I am clearly not the | 0:08:40 | 0:08:46
target audience. As a cinema goer,
the first one was the only one that | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
was vaguely interesting and the next
two are just dull. You cannot | 0:08:50 | 0:08:56
criticise the cast. If anybody gave
you that dialogue to me, Laurence | 0:08:56 | 0:09:02
Olivier would struggle to deliver
some of those lines, which are on | 0:09:02 | 0:09:07
the level of everything, is
everything all right? Can I get you | 0:09:07 | 0:09:15
a Latte. I think I will sleep Black
Panther. Have you seen Phantom | 0:09:15 | 0:09:23
thread again, the last time we met
you had seen it four times. No, I | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
have not seen it again. I love
Johnny Greenwood's score. Has been | 0:09:28 | 0:09:34
Oscar-nominated. People say they
don't like the central character. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
You are not meant to like him, he is
meant to be difficult. Leslie | 0:09:39 | 0:09:45
Manville steals the show. I think it
is the best film since Punch-drunk | 0:09:45 | 0:09:54
Love and they make a romance double
bill. I would watch Phantom thread | 0:09:54 | 0:10:04
again but alongside Punch-drunk
Love. There is something about it. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:17
There was a debate whether the
costumes he designs were | 0:10:17 | 0:10:22
deliberately not very good.
Everybody says he is a fabulous | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
dress designer but the first thing
he designs has somebody dressed up | 0:10:24 | 0:10:30
like the Queen of hearts. But that
is kind of the point, I like it. The | 0:10:30 | 0:10:37
DVD, Loving Vincent. It reminds me
of art conversation last week when I | 0:10:37 | 0:10:45
said can you watch Blade Runner on a
DVD, it is the same about Loving | 0:10:45 | 0:10:51
Vincent. Narrative is a bit flimsy,
it is about going back to find out | 0:10:51 | 0:10:59
what happened in Vincent Riendeau
off's lie. I have seen it on the big | 0:10:59 | 0:11:07
screen and the small screen and it
has the same... It is hypnotising, | 0:11:07 | 0:11:13
like watching paintings you know,
moving around. Slightly odd, but | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
stunning. If you have it on DVD, you
can go back and watch it again and | 0:11:18 | 0:11:25
marvelling at the hours of work that
must have gone into creating it. Six | 0:11:25 | 0:11:31
years of painting to create the
film. Astonishing. Thank you. A | 0:11:31 | 0:11:38
quick reminder, you can find all the
