of Team GB's medal hopefuls ahead of

different ovens. That is all to

come, but now it is time for The

0:00:000:00:07

Film Review.

0:00:070:00:17

Hello and welcome to

The Film Review on BBC News.

0:00:190:00:22

To take us through this week's

cinema releases is Mark Kermode.

0:00:220:00:26

So Mark, what do we have this week?

0:00:260:00:31

We have Black Panther, which opens

on Tuesday. We have Pad Man, based

0:00:310:00:38

on a true, inspiring story. And 50

shades, it all comes to an end.

0:00:380:00:48

Black Panther, why isn't it opening

until Tuesday?

I presume it is

0:00:480:00:56

because it will give it a long,

opening weekend. It has been eagerly

0:00:560:01:00

awaited. At the beginning of the

film, it is a technologically

0:01:000:01:12

advanced society and they must keep

their secrets away from the rest of

0:01:120:01:18

the world in case it falls into the

wrong hands. The movie plays great

0:01:180:01:23

attention to detail. Here is a clip.

Remote system activated.

Wait, which

0:01:230:01:41

side of the road is it?

Just drive.

Let's go! Look at your suit. You

0:01:410:02:03

have been taking bullets.

Run around

the track.

0:02:030:02:18

Show off.

That is the most generic

stuff. Its strengths are threefold.

0:02:220:02:33

It looks great. It is superbly

realised will stop you feel you are

0:02:330:02:42

in the world and it is well evoked.

The second thing, it sounds great,

0:02:420:02:47

everything from the shop dialogue to

the superb music keeps the action

0:02:470:02:52

moving along. It really involves you

in the characters. It is well

0:02:520:02:55

played, the cast Angela Bassett, it

is a really good cast. But the most

0:02:550:03:04

important thing is, you believe in

the world of the film. You believe

0:03:040:03:09

in the characters and you know and

understand the characters and both

0:03:090:03:16

it -- motivation. I am not a comic

book fan. The thing about this is,

0:03:160:03:22

it works on its own terms as a

stand-alone piece. There has been a

0:03:220:03:26

lot written about the importance of

this movie at this moment. But it

0:03:260:03:31

will only work if the film itself

works as a rip-roaring piece of

0:03:310:03:34

entertainment and it does.

It is

important, but I can look at that

0:03:340:03:41

and say, as well documented on this

programme, action films are not my

0:03:410:03:46

thing but they are the thing of my

other half. Our debate will be, is

0:03:460:03:50

it two hours of my life I will never

get back and she will say, no, we

0:03:500:03:54

have to go and see it.

You get the

spectacle, all the stuff you want

0:03:540:04:00

and it does look and sound

wonderful. But you know the

0:04:000:04:03

characters, you like them and

understand them. This is a world

0:04:030:04:07

where there are no gender imbalances

you often get. Women are on an equal

0:04:070:04:13

playing field. When they have the

big fight sequences, even I

0:04:130:04:17

understood who everyone was, who

they were fighting, why they were

0:04:170:04:21

fighting and what they were trying

to do with their time. As a piece of

0:04:210:04:25

drama, it is well laid out. I

enjoyed it.

I might have a hope. I

0:04:250:04:32

am normally nudging going, what? Who

is this person? Why are they doing

0:04:320:04:36

that?

No, I understand it.

You give

me hope.

Pad Man. Sounds unusual? It

0:04:360:04:48

is a man in India who invented a

machine for making cheap sanitary

0:04:480:04:59

pads. The hears a newlywed young man

who doesn't understand why his new

0:04:590:05:06

bride spends five days every month

out of the house. Then he is ashamed

0:05:060:05:11

why the women around him suffer

every month. He designs a machine to

0:05:110:05:15

make low-cost sanitary pads, which

will not only protect the health of

0:05:150:05:19

the women but provide employment.

But he does so in a culture in which

0:05:190:05:23

there is a lot of shame around this

subject. The director of the film

0:05:230:05:28

said he wanted to make the story as

accessible as possible. He does, it

0:05:280:05:33

has slapstick comedy, music

sequences, laughs, romance and

0:05:330:05:36

tension. It is a joyful and

uplifting film. It is telling the

0:05:360:05:42

story, which has its roots in a

real-life story. It is a

0:05:420:05:47

fictionalised version of a real-life

story, but it does stick close to

0:05:470:05:51

the truth. It is charmingly done and

playing to the widest possible

0:05:510:05:55

audience and succeeding in taking

that story and making it completely

0:05:550:06:00

accessible it is charming and

uplifting. Another hit.

Fantastic,

0:06:000:06:05

wonderful story.

Based on a true

story, which is more than be said

0:06:050:06:19

the Fifty Shades. We do have

twilight to thank for this. The

0:06:190:06:23

story is, having taint Christian

Grey, Anastasia must see if she can

0:06:230:06:30

find independence and happiness

within their marriage. Here is the

0:06:300:06:33

clip.

You do want to have kids

someday?

Someday, sure.

You don't

0:06:330:06:43

really sound sure.

You know what I

am sure about? It is great steak.

0:06:430:06:51

Christian? Do you not want to have

kids?

Of course. One day, just not

0:06:510:07:01

now. I am not ready to share you

with anyone.

He doesn't want

0:07:010:07:13

children. I can tell her that now.

There is a narrative. It is easy to

0:07:130:07:22

sneer at the Fifty Shades movies

because they are not very good. The

0:07:220:07:28

first one, they tried to do

something interesting, but it was

0:07:280:07:31

too restricted. The second one was

directed and it stuck to the ear

0:07:310:07:42

scraping dialogue of the source. It

is badly written, the actors are

0:07:420:07:48

doing their best. James Foley is

directing on autopilot. He has been

0:07:480:07:53

given this as a safe pair of hands.

It ends up looking like a promo

0:07:530:07:58

simply for a glamorous lifestyle for

fast cars and designer apartments.

0:07:580:08:04

Although there is some kinky fetters

vision, it is very peripheral. What

0:08:040:08:08

the film is interested in, look back

Private Jet! It is a film about

0:08:080:08:15

possessions and about those kind of

aspirations. In the end it ends up

0:08:150:08:20

looking like a commercial or pop

promo. It makes you look back to the

0:08:200:08:26

days of nine and a half weeks and

think wow, what a ground-breaking,

0:08:260:08:31

Citizen Kane like a movie that was.

I don't know why people get angry

0:08:310:08:35

because it is playing to a certain

audience who are devoted to it. It

0:08:350:08:40

will pack the audience is out on the

first weekend. I am clearly not the

0:08:400:08:46

target audience. As a cinema goer,

the first one was the only one that

0:08:460:08:50

was vaguely interesting and the next

two are just dull. You cannot

0:08:500:08:56

criticise the cast. If anybody gave

you that dialogue to me, Laurence

0:08:560:09:02

Olivier would struggle to deliver

some of those lines, which are on

0:09:020:09:07

the level of everything, is

everything all right? Can I get you

0:09:070:09:15

a Latte.

I think I will sleep Black

Panther. Have you seen Phantom

0:09:150:09:23

thread again, the last time we met

you had seen it four times.

No, I

0:09:230:09:28

have not seen it again. I love

Johnny Greenwood's score. Has been

0:09:280:09:34

Oscar-nominated. People say they

don't like the central character.

0:09:340:09:39

You are not meant to like him, he is

meant to be difficult. Leslie

0:09:390:09:45

Manville steals the show. I think it

is the best film since Punch-drunk

0:09:450:09:54

Love and they make a romance double

bill. I would watch Phantom thread

0:09:540:10:04

again but alongside Punch-drunk

Love.

There is something about it.

0:10:040:10:17

There was a debate whether the

costumes he designs were

0:10:170:10:22

deliberately not very good.

Everybody says he is a fabulous

0:10:220:10:24

dress designer but the first thing

he designs has somebody dressed up

0:10:240:10:30

like the Queen of hearts. But that

is kind of the point, I like it.

The

0:10:300:10:37

DVD, Loving Vincent. It reminds me

of art conversation last week when I

0:10:370:10:45

said can you watch Blade Runner on a

DVD, it is the same about Loving

0:10:450:10:51

Vincent.

Narrative is a bit flimsy,

it is about going back to find out

0:10:510:10:59

what happened in Vincent Riendeau

off's lie. I have seen it on the big

0:10:590:11:07

screen and the small screen and it

has the same... It is hypnotising,

0:11:070:11:13

like watching paintings you know,

moving around.

Slightly odd, but

0:11:130:11:18

stunning.

If you have it on DVD, you

can go back and watch it again and

0:11:180:11:25

marvelling at the hours of work that

must have gone into creating it.

Six

0:11:250:11:31

years of painting to create the

film.

Astonishing.

Thank you. A

0:11:310:11:38
