Andy Murray looks back to his best at the Monte Carlo Masters. All that

:00:00.:00:00.

and more at 6:30pm. Now it is time for The Film Review.

:00:00.:00:19.

Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

:00:20.:00:21.

To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.

:00:22.:00:24.

So, Mark, what do we have this week?

:00:25.:00:28.

What do we have? It has been a very good week. We

:00:29.:00:36.

have Eye In The Sky, and intelligent war thriller.

:00:37.:00:44.

We also have Fan. And we have The Jungle Book. A live

:00:45.:00:51.

action, or is reimagining of the Kipling classic.

:00:52.:00:58.

This is by Gavin Hood. The story is that there is a grown machine and

:00:59.:01:01.

Nairobi. We watched the mission playing out on the screens of those

:01:02.:01:04.

in charge of running the mission in London, Nevada and elsewhere. Helen

:01:05.:01:07.

Mirren is the no-nonsense colonel who has been tracking a particular

:01:08.:01:12.

terror suspect. They end up any house where there are a number of

:01:13.:01:15.

people that they are trying to get. Our mission is to capture, not kill.

:01:16.:01:20.

When it is evident that a suicide mission is imminent, she wants is a

:01:21.:01:28.

strike. However, Aaron Paul, the Nevada pilot, piloting the drone,

:01:29.:01:31.

one not engage. Because into the target area comes a young girl. You

:01:32.:01:33.

is a clip. -- here is a clip. I will give her time

:01:34.:01:39.

to walk through. Lieutenant, we have this one

:01:40.:01:53.

opportunity, let us not lose it. Those men are bound

:01:54.:02:29.

to disperse, engage now. If I can see them moving or this

:02:30.:02:42.

girl was in the radius, but I want to give her a chance to get out of

:02:43.:02:45.

the way. You have clearance, there is a a lot

:02:46.:02:51.

more at stake. That is American sniper territory in

:02:52.:02:56.

some way. Very similar. There are definite comparisons.

:02:57.:03:00.

Films like Drones and A good Kill was a similar thing. This was done

:03:01.:03:05.

well. Essentially what happens in real time as all the interested

:03:06.:03:08.

parties, the military and politicians argue about whether they

:03:09.:03:12.

can proceed legally and morally, politically as well. Despite the

:03:13.:03:16.

fact that it sounds like it could be a drama in which a bunch of people

:03:17.:03:22.

in rooms argue with each other over telephones and video screens, Gavin

:03:23.:03:28.

Hood has made it very cinematic. The man on the ground in Nairobi, he has

:03:29.:03:32.

the trickiest role. He is the man with the sci-fi gadgetry, the board

:03:33.:03:36.

with a camera which stretches credibility slightly. For the rest

:03:37.:03:41.

of the movie, Helen Mirren is in top form. Alan Rickman in his last

:03:42.:03:44.

on-screen role is read as the general who wants to move forward

:03:45.:03:48.

with the mission but is having to do with politicians, they seem to be

:03:49.:03:52.

more concerned with saving face than lives. What the film becomes

:03:53.:03:56.

business discussion of the morality of not just the situation, of

:03:57.:04:00.

Easter, it is melodramatically contrived that you have the terror

:04:01.:04:03.

suspects but also this young girl that is selling bread, which one is

:04:04.:04:08.

more important? But it manages to do with it in a way that is essentially

:04:09.:04:13.

a piece of mainstream entertainment, this should play well in multiplexes

:04:14.:04:17.

but it is ambivalent. It does not tie up that Lucent in the way that

:04:18.:04:20.

you would sometimes expect this type of film to do. It holds its nerve.

:04:21.:04:25.

You had a little better that pulsing score which gives the whole thing a

:04:26.:04:31.

very threatening edge, it reminds me of the tangerine dreams School of

:04:32.:04:35.

sorcery. Well executed screenplay that focuses in on an idea and plays

:04:36.:04:40.

it from every different angle. It is juggled all the way through...

:04:41.:04:44.

It is story about time. It is very contemporary and

:04:45.:04:49.

considering there have been films on this area, it finds its own area. I

:04:50.:04:53.

thought it dealt with it well and I was genuinely gripped watching it.

:04:54.:04:56.

Fan. This is interesting.

:04:57.:05:04.

This is Shah Rukh Khan playing both parts. The story is that the young

:05:05.:05:12.

fan goes to see his idol. He looks like him and he wants to meet him.

:05:13.:05:16.

Inevitably when he tries to meet him he finds himself being not welcomed

:05:17.:05:20.

in. He is like the rejected. His adoration turns to something like

:05:21.:05:24.

aggression. I really enjoyed it. One of the things I do about it, it has

:05:25.:05:29.

lots of action sequences, the chase across the rooftops, that sort of

:05:30.:05:34.

James Bond territory, but it has an underpinning of the King of comedy,

:05:35.:05:38.

other people have said it is like Ms Robach -- Mazzarri, the Stephen King

:05:39.:05:42.

adaptation. But it is played very suddenly. -- Misery. It is hyper

:05:43.:05:52.

stylised. I thought it was gripping and really entertaining. Actually,

:05:53.:05:56.

in some places, it had some real insight into the nature of celebrity

:05:57.:06:00.

and the nature of fandom. Someone said always avoid things

:06:01.:06:05.

with an evil twin, not quite but similar.

:06:06.:06:08.

There is the doppelgangers think which is going on.

:06:09.:06:14.

And lastly, Jungle book. Do not rewrite a hat!

:06:15.:06:19.

I went through that same thing. Very much like Cinderella, it owes much

:06:20.:06:26.

to the literally source. It is a live action reimagining. The only

:06:27.:06:30.

thing that is life, however in the images that you seek is the young

:06:31.:06:35.

guy that plays Mowgli. It is quite extraordinary, firstly because he

:06:36.:06:38.

does resemble the cartoon predecessor and secondly because

:06:39.:06:41.

most of what he's doing in real life is reacting to the blue screen and

:06:42.:06:45.

green screen that is played by Neel Sethi. Here is a clip. I cannot help

:06:46.:06:57.

but notice there is this strange poker.

:06:58.:07:05.

-- order. What is this strange scent? This is some kind of man cup.

:07:06.:07:22.

Moggie belongs to my pack, she can. -- Shere Khan. -- Mowgli.

:07:23.:07:33.

Does my face not remind you of what he grown man can do? Everyone

:07:34.:07:42.

forgets how the law works after a few years when you change a hunting

:07:43.:07:45.

ground. Let me remind you, the man cup becomes man and man is

:07:46.:07:52.

forbidden! I am sold on that.

:07:53.:07:57.

Exactly. There has been suggestions that this is a more dark and

:07:58.:08:00.

dangerous version of the story. There are some scary things in it.

:08:01.:08:05.

But it has some of the songs. It has a bear necessities. And the updated

:08:06.:08:11.

version of the King Louie song. The CGI scenery is lush and teacher into

:08:12.:08:17.

that world. I was a bit in trepidation but I was won over. It

:08:18.:08:22.

is a romp with great action sequences. Secondly, the characters

:08:23.:08:24.

are every bit as likeable as you would like them to be. It owes more

:08:25.:08:30.

to the Kipling than the Disney version. Superbly rendered. Jon

:08:31.:08:33.

Favreau that a great job of the balance between pathos and fear in

:08:34.:08:39.

action. This is the greatest compliment. I would happily go

:08:40.:08:42.

straight back in and watch it again. I thought it was really enchanting

:08:43.:08:45.

and adventurous. I wonder about the work for the beer

:08:46.:08:53.

in Revenant was better? That is why it has been called to

:08:54.:09:00.

The Jungle Book meets Revenant. Your best was Iran for the week. --

:09:01.:09:09.

Ran. Yes, this is a translation of King

:09:10.:09:13.

Lear. It will come to Blu-ray quite soon. If you get a chance to see it

:09:14.:09:18.

in cinemas, it is part of the ongoing Shakespeare celebrations

:09:19.:09:21.

that the BFI have been doing. You do not really need just the DVD, you

:09:22.:09:27.

have to see it on the big screen, they had projected.

:09:28.:09:32.

Your DVD of the leaders Grandma. Mixed reviews of this. Some teenager

:09:33.:09:37.

said it was not for them. They are wrong. It is for everyone.

:09:38.:09:45.

It is 7273 minutes long, perfect length. It is about on alternative

:09:46.:09:49.

lifestyle grandmother who is helping her granddaughter who has had

:09:50.:09:55.

trouble and need advice. Lily Tomlin did brilliant, she won a Golden

:09:56.:09:58.

Globe and she should have been Oscar-nominated. It is about to be

:09:59.:10:01.

that her personal and political situations have changed. I thought

:10:02.:10:05.

it was funny and intelligent and charming but also gritty and had a

:10:06.:10:08.

real edge to it. There were moments in it that make me think this is

:10:09.:10:14.

what is done by a Cinema budget that all types cannot do. Have you yet

:10:15.:10:20.

seen it? 70 something minutes. It deserved your time.

:10:21.:10:26.

Not a bad week. Eye In The Sky, Fan and Jungle book.

:10:27.:10:31.

Both Eye In The Sky and Jungle book are much better than expected either

:10:32.:10:33.

of them to be. A quick reminder, you will find more

:10:34.:10:38.

news and reviews online including our previous shows. That is it for

:10:39.:10:43.

this week. Thank you for watching, enjoy the movies. Goodbye.
