Now it is time for The Film Review. Hello and welcome to | :00:00. | :00:18.
The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this week's | :00:19. | :00:24.
cinema releases is Jason Solomon. So Jason, what do | :00:25. | :00:26.
we have this week? This week we sift the debris of the | :00:27. | :00:36.
Boston Marathon in the company of Kevin Bake owned mark hark mark in | :00:37. | :00:40.
Patriots Day. We take a long, sad look at the life of footballer and | :00:41. | :00:49.
alcoholic, George Best. And putting you off fluffy robes for life, we | :00:50. | :00:55.
seek A Cure For Wellness in a Swiss Alpine spa. | :00:56. | :00:59.
So, let's start with Patriots Day. It is the story of the 2013 Boston | :01:00. | :01:04.
Marathon bombing and the manhunt afterwards? Yes, the aftermath. It | :01:05. | :01:10.
gripped the world. There was this extraordinary bombing of the Boston | :01:11. | :01:14.
Marathon which takes place on Patriots Day. It is a well known | :01:15. | :01:22.
national event. It was bombed by two random brothers. The names were on | :01:23. | :01:29.
everyone's lips in 2013. Everyone remember, the brothers that escaped. | :01:30. | :01:34.
They had to shut the city down looking for the brothers, one was | :01:35. | :01:39.
holed up in a boat in someone else's backyard. The strangely human story | :01:40. | :01:44.
of this wanton destruction that they wrought. | :01:45. | :01:48.
The film is put together in a classic disaster film fashion, the | :01:49. | :01:54.
people assembling for the big day of the Boston Marathon, and including | :01:55. | :02:00.
Marc hark as a cop. Then there is the Kevin Bacon, the FBI man, and | :02:01. | :02:04.
John Goodman with his strange eyebrows. This is them having a look | :02:05. | :02:09.
after the explosion. You are not any closer to | :02:10. | :02:12.
identifying the guys that we are really looking for. We have to | :02:13. | :02:18.
release the pictures. If we release the pictures know it | :02:19. | :02:22.
is out of our control. Gentlemen, if I may, right now, | :02:23. | :02:28.
Boston is working against us. Right now, in this city, when it comes to | :02:29. | :02:32.
terrorism, everyone wants to talk. There are a lot of people talking | :02:33. | :02:36.
but talking about the wrong people. Release the pictures of our guys, | :02:37. | :02:41.
sit back and listen. Trust me. Start letting bust on work for us, I'm | :02:42. | :02:48.
telling you. I understand, Boston. But I can't snap my fingers on this, | :02:49. | :02:53.
the decision goes up to the Attorney General. | :02:54. | :02:58.
This is my sfi, Rick, release the God dam pictures. | :02:59. | :03:02.
It was a terrible tragedy. Recent. It is difficult to make a Hollywood | :03:03. | :03:07.
film about such a tragedy so recently? And the director has been | :03:08. | :03:13.
faithful as much as he can and to those affected by the tragedy and | :03:14. | :03:17.
injured, the people with the amputees. The people at the end of | :03:18. | :03:21.
the film discussing how they put their lives back together it is a | :03:22. | :03:25.
healing process for the town of Boston. There is Mark Wahlberg, a | :03:26. | :03:31.
poster boy for Boston. It's a strange film. It is all about | :03:32. | :03:37.
Boston. What it does not do is examine the motives of the brothers | :03:38. | :03:41.
who out of nowhere caused this carnage. While it does feature them, | :03:42. | :03:47.
they go in their homes and feature their wives but it does not probe | :03:48. | :03:54.
the motives. That is the fear. How can the renegade terrorists provoke | :03:55. | :03:58.
such a carnage and bring the city to its mes? That is more interesting | :03:59. | :04:03.
for me. So it was a bit hurrah, this film for me. | :04:04. | :04:06.
The clip that we saw it looked like a thriller. Does it have that | :04:07. | :04:11.
element? That tension of a thriller? I call it a proceedural it is very | :04:12. | :04:17.
much of the safety of the American citizens, protected by the great | :04:18. | :04:20.
policemen and the Ambulance Service, they will track down the killers, | :04:21. | :04:25.
the media helping. Although they look hapless as the brothers led | :04:26. | :04:32.
them a merry dance for 89 hours and ended up hiding in someone's boat. | :04:33. | :04:39.
It is slightly ridiculous, without the humour and the absurdity as to | :04:40. | :04:45.
what terrorism can do. It is dangerous, it is called Patriots | :04:46. | :04:52.
Day, so it's very American and up-thumping but it loses something | :04:53. | :04:56.
because of that because it is about people who wanted to be | :04:57. | :05:00.
anti-American. I wanted them to explore that more darkly than it | :05:01. | :05:03.
does. Let's move on to George Best. A | :05:04. | :05:08.
great footballer. Beautiful to watch him play, then in his later life, so | :05:09. | :05:14.
sad, really, he became an alcoholic. Is this a good film? This is a | :05:15. | :05:19.
doomary. We have seen many films of him. The popping of the champagne, | :05:20. | :05:27.
the dazzling eyes. He was the first boutique footballer. But footballers | :05:28. | :05:32.
have changed. Football has changed. It does not look like this anymore. | :05:33. | :05:39.
But he was whippy, incandescent, he had it all by 22 but washed up and | :05:40. | :05:47.
retired by 27. It is put together like a Shakespearean tragedy. | :05:48. | :05:52.
Sitting on the size lines, despairing and sad. The only person | :05:53. | :05:57.
who is not sad is George Best. He seems happy with his lot. | :05:58. | :06:05.
There is a shot where someone runs in, saying Besty, Besty, where did | :06:06. | :06:12.
it go wrong but he is lying on bed with a beautiful woman, surrounded | :06:13. | :06:16.
by lots of money. He didn't want people's help. He didn't want | :06:17. | :06:20.
people's love. That is why it is sad to watch. As an audience member you | :06:21. | :06:25.
want to reach out to this man and love him. He doesn't want it, he | :06:26. | :06:29.
rejects it, preferring to disappear into the booze. I think that is what | :06:30. | :06:35.
is sad. It is well put together. It is a little dour, in that it lacks | :06:36. | :06:41.
the light of George Best's feet. All right. Now, A Cure For Wellness. | :06:42. | :06:47.
This is about a young executive, who is sent to retrieve his company's | :06:48. | :06:56.
CEO from the Swiss Alps fromst a spa? Yes, this arrogant young man | :06:57. | :07:07.
goes to a spa and there are people wearing white suits. I am very wary | :07:08. | :07:13.
of people in these suits, with clip boards and clipped accents. Let's | :07:14. | :07:21.
look at this along the corridors of uncertainty with Jason Isaacs. Hi! | :07:22. | :07:27.
What are you doing here? Sorry, I don't understand. What are you doing | :07:28. | :07:33.
here? Take it easy. It's OK. | :07:34. | :07:37.
Mr Lockhart, every time I turn around you are somewhere you are not | :07:38. | :07:42.
supposed to be. I guess I'm lost. Time trying to | :07:43. | :07:48.
find my way back to my room. This is a restricted floor. There are signs | :07:49. | :07:53.
everywhere, surely you did not come down here by accident. What exactly | :07:54. | :07:57.
are you looking for? I had a problem with my tooth. | :07:58. | :08:01.
Your tooth? Actually it is feeling much better. If you can point me in | :08:02. | :08:06.
the direction of my room. Nonsense, we can't let you get an | :08:07. | :08:11.
infection. You must let us talk care of you. After all, that's why you're | :08:12. | :08:19.
here... Menacing! Yes, if you don't like dentists, don't watch the next | :08:20. | :08:25.
bit. Who does like the dentist? Well, ever since Marathon Man. There | :08:26. | :08:32.
are lots of old contraptions in this spa, like the 1950s with the | :08:33. | :08:36.
medicine ball, and the tanks with the eels it is like a Bond Villain | :08:37. | :08:46.
hide away. Very pastiche. It is a recipe for disaster as to what was | :08:47. | :08:50.
going on. A complete mess of a film. How long? 2.5 hours it is quite a | :08:51. | :08:57.
lot. What is best out at the moment? | :08:58. | :09:04.
Well, A Cure For Wellness but also Moonlight it is a beautiful, tender, | :09:05. | :09:11.
poetic coming of age story told about the life of a black boy from | :09:12. | :09:16.
Miami, from a little boy to a man. It is about his life and his tender | :09:17. | :09:21.
growing sexuality. Realising who he is. It is about identity and | :09:22. | :09:27.
identity politics. It is a new sort of cinema. It has eight Oscar | :09:28. | :09:33.
nominations. That takes us nicely to the Oscars. | :09:34. | :09:41.
Almost upon us? I loved Moonlight. The budget was 8.5. It has the | :09:42. | :09:46.
chance of becoming the smallest film ever to win Best Picture. It is a | :09:47. | :09:51.
bit like Leicester. It stands the chance of dislodging the favourite, | :09:52. | :09:58.
La La Land. I am a favourite. I know that there is a backlash, people | :09:59. | :10:03.
saying it is overhyped with the 14 nominations going to the Oscars | :10:04. | :10:07.
ares, I don't think it will win all 14. But there could be a tidy haul | :10:08. | :10:16.
for it. It is good for Hollywood. Rebooted for a new generation. | :10:17. | :10:20.
People are going to it thinking that they will see Singing in the Rain. | :10:21. | :10:25.
But it is a modern Indy film with singing and dancing. | :10:26. | :10:33.
What about Best Actress, Best Actor? Well, I that I that the Best Actor | :10:34. | :10:39.
will not go to Ryan Gosling but to Casey Affleck. There is also a | :10:40. | :10:45.
threat from Denzel Washington in Fences. And Best Actress, I think | :10:46. | :10:52.
will go to Emma Stone. That is sewn into her terrorist. I think that the | :10:53. | :11:04.
Best Picture will go to La La Land. I think maybe Moonlight could do it | :11:05. | :11:13.
but those directors could become the Best ever Director winners. | :11:14. | :11:20.
And maybe a screenplay for Moonlight and One for Manchester by the Sea. | :11:21. | :11:24.
Let's see how many of them you get right. | :11:25. | :11:26.
I'm sure all of them. Don't forget you can | :11:27. | :11:32.
catch up on our previous Well, we had sunshine today, not | :11:33. | :11:50.
everybody but most of us got a bit of sunny rays coming through the | :11:51. | :11:53.
clouds. It is a different story this weekend. It is going downhill! More | :11:54. | :11:57.
cloud, the rain coming | :11:58. | :11:58. |
