Now it is time for The Film Review. Hello and welcome to

The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this week's

cinema releases is Jason Solomon. So Jason, what do

we have this week? This week we sift the debris of the

Boston Marathon in the company of Kevin Bake owned mark hark mark in

Patriots Day. We take a long, sad look at the life of footballer and

alcoholic, George Best. And putting you off fluffy robes for life, we

seek A Cure For Wellness in a Swiss Alpine spa.

So, let's start with Patriots Day. It is the story of the 2013 Boston

Marathon bombing and the manhunt afterwards? Yes, the aftermath. It

gripped the world. There was this extraordinary bombing of the Boston

Marathon which takes place on Patriots Day. It is a well known

national event. It was bombed by two random brothers. The names were on

everyone's lips in 2013. Everyone remember, the brothers that escaped.

They had to shut the city down looking for the brothers, one was

holed up in a boat in someone else's backyard. The strangely human story

of this wanton destruction that they wrought.

The film is put together in a classic disaster film fashion, the

people assembling for the big day of the Boston Marathon, and including

Marc hark as a cop. Then there is the Kevin Bacon, the FBI man, and

John Goodman with his strange eyebrows. This is them having a look

after the explosion. You are not any closer to

identifying the guys that we are really looking for. We have to

release the pictures. If we release the pictures know it

is out of our control. Gentlemen, if I may, right now,

Boston is working against us. Right now, in this city, when it comes to

terrorism, everyone wants to talk. There are a lot of people talking

but talking about the wrong people. Release the pictures of our guys,

sit back and listen. Trust me. Start letting bust on work for us, I'm

telling you. I understand, Boston. But I can't snap my fingers on this,

the decision goes up to the Attorney General.

It was a terrible tragedy. Recent. It is difficult to make a Hollywood

film about such a tragedy so recently? And the director has been

faithful as much as he can and to those affected by the tragedy and

injured, the people with the amputees. The people at the end of

the film discussing how they put their lives back together it is a

healing process for the town of Boston. There is Mark Wahlberg, a

poster boy for Boston. It's a strange film. It is all about

Boston. What it does not do is examine the motives of the brothers

who out of nowhere caused this carnage. While it does feature them,

they go in their homes and feature their wives but it does not probe

the motives. That is the fear. How can the renegade terrorists provoke

such a carnage and bring the city to its mes? That is more interesting

for me. So it was a bit hurrah, this film for me.

The clip that we saw it looked like a thriller. Does it have that

element? That tension of a thriller? I call it a proceedural it is very

much of the safety of the American citizens, protected by the great

policemen and the Ambulance Service, they will track down the killers,

the media helping. Although they look hapless as the brothers led

them a merry dance for 89 hours and ended up hiding in someone's boat.

It is slightly ridiculous, without the humour and the absurdity as to

what terrorism can do. It is dangerous, it is called Patriots

Day, so it's very American and up-thumping but it loses something

because of that because it is about people who wanted to be

anti-American. I wanted them to explore that more darkly than it

does. Let's move on to George Best. A

great footballer. Beautiful to watch him play, then in his later life, so

sad, really, he became an alcoholic. Is this a good film? This is a

doomary. We have seen many films of him. The popping of the champagne,

the dazzling eyes. He was the first boutique footballer. But footballers

have changed. Football has changed. It does not look like this anymore.

But he was whippy, incandescent, he had it all by 22 but washed up and

retired by 27. It is put together like a Shakespearean tragedy.

Sitting on the size lines, despairing and sad. The only person

who is not sad is George Best. He seems happy with his lot.

There is a shot where someone runs in, saying Besty, Besty, where did

it go wrong but he is lying on bed with a beautiful woman, surrounded

by lots of money. He didn't want people's help. He didn't want

people's love. That is why it is sad to watch. As an audience member you

want to reach out to this man and love him. He doesn't want it, he

rejects it, preferring to disappear into the booze. I think that is what

is sad. It is well put together. It is a little dour, in that it lacks

the light of George Best's feet. All right. Now, A Cure For Wellness.

This is about a young executive, who is sent to retrieve his company's

CEO from the Swiss Alps fromst a spa? Yes, this arrogant young man

goes to a spa and there are people wearing white suits. I am very wary

of people in these suits, with clip boards and clipped accents. Let's

look at this along the corridors of uncertainty with Jason Isaacs. Hi!

What are you doing here? Sorry, I don't understand. What are you doing

here? Take it easy. It's OK.

Mr Lockhart, every time I turn around you are somewhere you are not

supposed to be. I guess I'm lost. Time trying to

find my way back to my room. This is a restricted floor. There are signs

everywhere, surely you did not come down here by accident. What exactly

are you looking for? I had a problem with my tooth.

Your tooth? Actually it is feeling much better. If you can point me in

the direction of my room. Nonsense, we can't let you get an

infection. You must let us talk care of you. After all, that's why you're

here... Menacing! Yes, if you don't like dentists, don't watch the next

bit. Who does like the dentist? Well, ever since Marathon Man. There

are lots of old contraptions in this spa, like the 1950s with the

medicine ball, and the tanks with the eels it is like a Bond Villain

hide away. Very pastiche. It is a recipe for disaster as to what was

going on. A complete mess of a film. How long? 2.5 hours it is quite a

lot. What is best out at the moment?

Well, A Cure For Wellness but also Moonlight it is a beautiful, tender,

poetic coming of age story told about the life of a black boy from

Miami, from a little boy to a man. It is about his life and his tender

growing sexuality. Realising who he is. It is about identity and

identity politics. It is a new sort of cinema. It has eight Oscar

nominations. That takes us nicely to the Oscars.

Almost upon us? I loved Moonlight. The budget was 8.5. It has the

chance of becoming the smallest film ever to win Best Picture. It is a

bit like Leicester. It stands the chance of dislodging the favourite,

La La Land. I am a favourite. I know that there is a backlash, people

saying it is overhyped with the 14 nominations going to the Oscars

ares, I don't think it will win all 14. But there could be a tidy haul

for it. It is good for Hollywood. Rebooted for a new generation.

People are going to it thinking that they will see Singing in the Rain.

But it is a modern Indy film with singing and dancing.

What about Best Actress, Best Actor? Well, I that I that the Best Actor

will not go to Ryan Gosling but to Casey Affleck. There is also a

threat from Denzel Washington in Fences. And Best Actress, I think

will go to Emma Stone. That is sewn into her terrorist. I think that the

Best Picture will go to La La Land. I think maybe Moonlight could do it

but those directors could become the Best ever Director winners.

And maybe a screenplay for Moonlight and One for Manchester by the Sea.

Let's see how many of them you get right.
