The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this week's

cinema releases is Mark Kermode. We have the club from the Chilean

direct. And you may have noticed, that man versus Superman is out.

Unless you have been on Mars, you would have noticed that. Zootropolis

looks good. It is set and designed on a city where animals live in. Our

heroine has just achieved her dream of becoming a police officer. She is

put on parking duty but let's the centre of a missing animal. Here is

a clip. Wait a minute. Polar bear flair will stop. We have got to go.

Whose car is it? Mr big and he doesn't like me. We have got to go.

We're not leaving, this is a crime scene. It will be an even bigger

crime scene if he finds me. Raymond? Is that Kevin? Long time, no see.

How about you forget you have seen me, for old times sake?

What did you do to make Mr big so mad at you. I may have sold him a

very expensive rug that was made from the fur of a skunk. You are

laughing all the way through it. That is what I like about it. It is

about predators returning to their wilder state and prey being in fear

of them. But it is a story of tolerance and people getting along

together, love and understanding at a time of mistrust, fear and

loathing. It is a story that has a good message, but it doesn't feel

like it is ladling it on. You get the animation, which is really

colourful and there is such detail in the construction of Zootropolis.

The jokes are consistently funny all the way through. I started laughing

in the first couple of minutes and I laughed all the way through. It is

one of those things where you like the characters and care about them.

It is a solid piece of work, proper family entertainment. The jokes work

for young and old alike. It doesn't feel like it has still nod and wink

at the older people in the audience. It is a real holiday treat. Nobody

was more surprised and me. I really enjoyed it. It sounds like a wet

Easter Day, if there is one. The club, you will have to try and see

this out. We have reviewed the films of this director eyes-macro. This is

a safe house, where the church are trying to safeguard the priests.

This is a film that genuinely deserves the reviews, it is a flip

side looking out of the window. Other times it plays like a hellish

version of Father Ted. It is when the shifting times are so well

handled and the subject matter is so dark, it was a finely honed piece of

work. It is not for everybody and you will have to go out of your way

to find it. A director at the height of their powers in terms of managing

difficult material and making it into something completely

unexpected. Even what we have just shown, it looks very grim. It has a

really cold and austere look to it, which works really well with the

subject matter. I know why you said Father Ted, I am getting more Harold

Pinter. That is it good comparison, which doesn't extend to our next

offering. I know this is the one you want to talk about, Gavin. I am a

Batman fan. This is the follow up to Man Of Steel. BCB ends battle from

the tip of Bruce Wayne on the ground and looking at it on the perspective

of collateral damage. He sees one of his towers destroyed and this sets

up a rivalry between him and Superman. Also their altar egos.

The daily planet, do I own this one, or is this the other guy? Good

people living in fear. Don't believe everything you hear, son. I have

seen it, he thinks he is above the law. The daily planet thinking they

are above the law is hypocritical, wouldn't you say? Every time you are

here, you write an editorial about an alien, if you want to, could burn

the whole place down. And there couldn't be anything to be done to

stop it. I don't share your opinion. Maybe it is Gotham city and me, we

have a bad history. I went into this wanting to like it. In Man of Steel,

became a film of super heroes hitting each other. This doesn't

solve any of the original problems, despite starting appearing to solve

the problems of the end of the previous film. Flashbacks, dream

sequences, a lot of it felt like a setup for another movie. Two and a

half hours, is an awful lot of setting up. Considering the story

isn't that completed, they managed to complicate it enormously.

Secondly, they managed to mistake murkiness of the darkness. The

Christopher Nolan, dark night movies had the sense of depth. This

doesn't. This mistakes at length for depth. There are some interesting

performances, but many get lost in the general stodgy, morass of what

is going on. It does do exactly what happened with Man of Steel, it leads

towards a great big, spectacular punch-up, which is far less

interesting than it ought to be. The shame of this is, I want fans to get

a movie they deserve. This has to do well to break even. It may do so,

but the reviews have not been kind to it. I did go in wanting to find

stuff to like it but came out feeling exhausted, feeling like it

had managed to make stodgy and lumpen, something that should be so

much lighter on its feet. You reference dark night, it shows you

can rework things imaginatively and provide a psychological that to you

didn't see before? Weirdly, psychological that is what is

missing. In the central conflict between Batman and Superman, it's

never established. It is a basic misunderstanding that goes on for a

long time and doesn't seem to have any great heft. There is a huge

amount of people onto vacating about monsters, day versus night. There is

an incredibly annoying performance from Lex Luther. You remember him in

another film, and you think, is this meant to be threatening. Jeremy

Irons is in a new thing great. Then he is gone. There is an entire 40

minutes in which he is not there. The problem is, for a huge

production movie like this to be disappointing, people think film

critics want to dislike movies, but I don't. I want them to be better.

Tom Olbison is flavour of the month in all sorts of things. The best of

the week is? High-rise. People either love or hate this. It is a

novel from the 1970s and they have gone and made this period so it is

the future looking at the past, looking the future. It is the story

about the high-rise that becomes part of society and then starts to

collapse. It is a fantastic script. Charismatic, central performance by

Tom Hiddleston. He is brilliant. He has got better since we interviewed

him at the British film awards. We couldn't hear him because of the

screaming fans. DVD, Bridge Of Spies Tom Hanks and Mark Rylands? Tom

Hanks is every bit as good as Mark Rylands. It is Stephen Spielberg.

The difference in styles between Tom Hanks and Mark Rylands, makes these

two characters have Sparks between them. And that is what is lacking

between Batman versus Superman. Also, Mark Rylands does the best

sniffs on-screen. It is worth watching. You will find more news
